Honest mistake.👍 Editing these comparisons must be a nightmare. Any chance you'll make a video with the 56 at 1.4? Maybe not a test like this, but it would ve cool to see them both compared wide open in one or two shots though.😊
@Achdam
@Achdam 5 лет назад
Were just gonna comment that, was like that must be the a7iii on left. You can tell by the blurness in the background. Because of the aps-c it’s equivalent to f3.0 in full frame. You should test the sigma in 1.4 and Sony in 2.0 and see the resault!
@ados1980cz
@ados1980cz 3 года назад
@@torbenlysholm1 Yep, exactly. I was hoping for wide open comparison too as that would show if the depth difference if any. For the cats eye on a7 III and 85mm 1.8, does EFC affect this, or would fully mechanical mode produce more rounded spectacular highlights. Can actually test myself as I have the FE 85 1.8.

wow i had all the answers correct including this one which you mentioned here but just in reverse. i thought the sigma will have better bokeh than sony becuse of 1.4 vs 1.8. it was interesting though since im basically a noob, i really am. don't even have a single mirrorless or dslr. want to have one some day though but i read a lot on these topics so that as soon as i get my hands on one of these i'll be good to go. so, one question, does this mean that a longer focal length is more important for bokeh than a lower f-stop? if you were to shoot at the lowest f with both lenses will the sigma win because of 1.4 or will the sony win because of 85mm?? thanks.

If You want same results You should leave 56mm at 1.4 and set 85mm at 2.1 (~2.0)

Dude, I have been looking for this video for a long time. I really like the 85mm look, but because I have a Sony A6400 I thought I could never achieve that because I would be to far away for portraits. Thanks to this video I finally see that a 56mm very nearly creates the same effect as the 85mm. Thank you so much.

Thanks for making this, I wanted to see this comparison too, but doesn't the 1.53 multiplier apply to the aperture/dof as well? I'd love to see it re-shot with the 56 at f/1.4, and the 85 at f/2. Wouldn't that be a more equal comparison?

Its a great comparison, so thank you, but why did you not use the sigma 56mm at f1.4? It would have been more fair since the results with the sigma on a crop sensor at f2.0 will be comaparable to f2.8 on a full frame. So this way it's not surprising that the 85mm has creamier bokeh cause you are comparing f2.0 to roughly f2.8
@BrandonColePhotography
@BrandonColePhotography 5 лет назад
Conceptx9 very true because you have to multiply the 1.4 also by the 1.5 crop factor but I wanted to really test the sharpness and bokeh. Even at 2.8 the 56 was still better

You have to stop down the 85 at f2.8 to compare it with the 56 at f2 .

It was actually very easy to tell which was which. The one with the creamier background was the 85 f/1.8 @ f2, since 56mm @ f/2 is equivalent to a ~85mm f/3 on FF. However, the Bokeh balls looked better on the 56mm. I'd like to see this test done with both shot wide-open or just the 85mm @ f/2. That's the point of both of these lenses. The 56mm @ f/1.4 is equivalent to a 85mm f/2.1 on FF... so that would be much more interesting to see. Hope to see that in the future... thanks!

Duuuude. I can't tell you how happy I am I found this video. Ive owned the a6500 with the 56mm for almost 3 years now. (since it was released I jumped on it). With the release of the a7c, finally a compact full frame camera I jumped on it not too long ago and have been contemplating to buy that exact 85mm ever since but I've struggled since I own just a fantastic setup with that a6500/56mm combo. After watching your video, and specifically noticing how truly amazing my a6500/56mm combo is, I'm sticking with it. It's actually the perfect 1-2 punch alongside my a7c/ 55mm Zeiss for portraits. Thanks again brotha, keep doing what you do.

guess it was not difficult be cause of cream blur of 85/1.8 and lemon-shape bokeh. maybe I should have left aperture of 56mm lens on 1.4 to have similar results. Great comparison, btw)

Yeah, the Sigma bokeh is consistently more smooth and round. You've got me thinking about ditching FF and just grabbing an A6600 instead. Smaller and lighter however, neither of these holds a candle to the Sigma 85mm Art wide open on FF.

I could consistently tell the difference between the 2 but had them backwards. I thought the A6500/56mm photos were there A73/85mm photos because the A6500/56mm combo made the model look slimmer (thought this would've been an effect of the longer focal length).

I own the Sigma 56. An easy sign that really gives away the Sigma in your shots is that there is no in-camera lens correction applied. It's especially visible on her head. I suggest applying it in post before the next comparison. Comparing them f2 vs f2 also gives away the full-frame as it will always have more depth of field. f/1.4 vs f/1.8 would have been a more fair comparison. Great shoot, thanks for the comparison! I personally prefer the shots from the Sigma, they look really awesome!

I know others have said already - but please show us a comparison at equivalent apertures! F1.4 on aps-c will produce similar DoF and noise performance as Full frame F2.2 if shutter speed is the same and iso is raised on FF to compensate, showing you can get as good as f2.2 full frame results if you get the apsc setup for cheaper. 👍

i love the A73R, i fell sony puts a lot of features on the the full frame and allow you to dail in the setting you want vs apsc. im not why they don’t have those buttons on apsc. fuji put relly coo buttons on thiers. for me there nothing to compare. they both take good pictures, one allows easier control and the other is smaller and lighter. though im not sure how energy sony gonna put apsc as they do in full frame.

This would be much harder to pick if both were shot wide open......the 85@ 1.8 would get more blur due to the compression being at the same aperture so the images would be almost identical if the 56 was one stop wider as intended.....cant believe you wasted such an opportunity for a great video😡

i think the take home lesson here is that though the lenses were not shot with their respective equivalent apertures, i think we can all agree that sigma 56mm holds its own against the sony 85mm in terms of image quality and a not too shabby price point. what more if they were shot wide open. will definitely be getting the 56mm for my a6500.

My Clues for the 85mm: 1. More compressed 2. Brighter (coz i think, it's attached to a full frame camera) 3. Roundier bokeh balls (not sure about the word "roundier" ✌😅) Great video, man. I have Sigma 56mm and have no regrets purchasing it.

To keep everything the same with bokeh, don't you have to match the fstop as you did with field of view for full frame equivalency? Aps-c is 1.5 multiplier so 56 * 1.5 = 84mm full frame ,1.4 * 1.5 =2.1 f stop full frame equivalence. You should be shooting 56@1.4 on aps-c and 84@~2 to get equivalence. Than share sharpness across the two. That would be more of an apple to apples comparison

I'd like to see a comparison where both lenses are at their widest, APSC 1.4 (2.1) vs FF 1.8
@jeanchindeko5477

Nice video, but you get your understanding and math wrong. You see if you want to compare a crop and full frame camera you also have to multiply the focal length (the f/xx) by the crop factor to have equivalence. So you 56mm f/1.4 is in fact a 84mm f/2.1 Full Frame equivalent. So only in the A7III you had to raise the aperture to f/2 and keep the A6500 lens fully open at f/1.4. Doing so you’ll have a really close in term of field of view and depth of field (DOF). Btw DOF is not the blurry background, but more what in focus in your frame. The blurry background is bokeh. Just redo some test with the A6500 at f/1.4 and the A7III at f/2.0 and you’ll see almost no difference. In your test you have around 1 stop of light difference between both as your A6500 is at f/3.0 Full Frame equivalence

Yep I am very aware I was at about 2.8 on the 6500. Next video it will be wide open :) It was on purpose but next time i'll tell you its at 2.8. Yes you need to multipy by the aperture also the 1.5 crop factor

Brandon Cole Photography will be watching for sure, but just shoot both lenses wide open, that is what we do in real life when we want bokeh, no need to stop Sony too f2.

@@lukazupie7220 So what the point to compare them? the 85mm with the full frame of course is going to have more bokeh! Isn't it what is the more important nowadays in photography: Bokeh! You see clients don't give a dam shit of Bokeh, they only want to look good on they photo, not the background to have all the attention because it is creamy, or whatever! The thing is when you know how light work, how DOF work, Full Frame or APS-C as long you have the correct lens you can achieve the exact same thing!!

@agsornsinmua6400

I still can tell which is which but not bcuz of the quality of the pics bcuz both of them are pretty sharp but bcuz of the angle of view of each lens. Even tho the framing of 56mm on APS-C is very similar to the 85mm on full fram but if you understand the focal length you will be able the tell which is which very easy by looking at the background. but I think if this comparison done in a studio with solid background, I don't think I can tell the difference.

I found one way to 100% spot the longer focal length lens, maybe some of you did the same: look for the pic with the most compression of distance between the subject and background. The longer the focal, the closer the background will seem to be, no matter how out of focus it is!

Great premier Brandon. Thank you. I love the comparisons. My opinion is the bokeh, detail and sharpness are better on the 56 1.4. However, it does this weird slimming effect to the model almost distorting her face in some pictures. It reminds me of shooting portraits with a 24 just not as drastic. From my understanding when using a crop you're supposed to multiply the f stop by the crop factor as well. So the 56 is the equivalent of 84 at 2.1. I'd love to see the 85 at f2 and the 56 at 1.4 to compare. I'd love to know any shortcomings of the 56 from a few aspects. Super low light, shooting HSS and overall editing obstacles meaning if dynamic range is effected at all. Overall, I loved your shoot and review on these. I think you just shifted the used and new market for lenses. Excellent job and I can't wait for the next one.

Bad comparison. you HAVE to compare with comparable apertures ( always 1 stop more for FF ) : this is true for bokeh and for sharpness.

Thanks for the video. However it's not very usefully to look at shots like this. Remember we're seeing this video at 1080p, you should include shots zoomed at 100% for us to compare details/sharpness
