Based on the asymmetric ghosting on the center crop on 200mm aps-c, I think this sample might suffer a bit from imperfect lens element alignment. It doesn't invalidate the conclusions, but if this is the main issue, other samples might perform considerably better.

I’m tentatively in the market for a telephoto zoom and was curious to see how this lens would position itself in the market. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it), this sigma offering makes for a tricky decision considering it’s cheaper than the Sony GM option, but heavier than the Tamron 70-180. If it could have somehow been compatible with Sony teleconverters that would have been an ace up its sleeve, but for now I’m kind of stuck between it and the Tamron. This lens is definitely more feature rich than the Tamron, but weight is a big factor for me and the fact that this lens is so heavy is a big negative for me.

If weight is a big factor then the Tamron is an easy choice. The benefit of the Sigma is the build quality but it definitely adds weight.

I have the Tamron 70-180 and preordered this one. For context, I use that lens on wedding days and it stayed on my camera most of the time. The seals on it are awful same with built quality, It feels like cheap plastic and scratches easier than anything else I ever had from sigma, sony or nikon. I have had two of them and both have an unusual amount of dust inside them within a month or two so I don't think its a sample variance. I am very careful, lens caps go on both ends and all are cleaned prior to being put on, and have never had this many dust particles work their way in even in non-internal focusing lenses. While it is small and light, I don't think they are great build quality so i would encourage you to reconsider how important the size and weight i vs the cost of having it taken apart and cleaned frequently. EDIT: Funny enough I was looking at he price of what to sell mine for on amazon Canada, and if you look at the review photos you will see how bad the dust gets... Its actually quite impressive....
@gelade
@gelade 10 месяцев назад
@@EugeneKam dust problem huh. Had the 24-70, 28-70, 100-400 and 150-600. Also some old ones like 24-105 for ef...etc. ALL have had terrible dust problems. Significantly worse than any Tamron or any other brands I had. Now, this one is internal zoom so I hope you get lucky but just don't be surprise if dust do get in. Sigma seal is a joke in general. If you want quality you really should just get the sony gm. even the gen 1 is more solid than w/e this is. As for image quality...we all know they are all good enough for w/e you do.

Great lens if you don't want to spend €3k on the Sony GM II! GM II just focuses a bit closer (82cm instead of 1m) and is a tad sharper. It's 300 grams heavier than the Sony lens though which equals to about 30% heavier. Really wish Sigma would consider making lighter lenses. I was a huge fan when I first started, because of the price and quality. But lately I've been selling them off and get lighter and more expensive lenses.

Tamron from 2012 (VC) is sharper then this lens @ 200 mm and F2.8. 200 mm focal length and aperture F2.8 is the most popular/important settings for 70-200 wideaperture lenses. Plus Tamron is lighter - only 1275 g without tripod collar (easily detachable). 11 years haven't changed much.
@TheDka1
@TheDka1 10 месяцев назад
You're saying the Tamron 70-200 2.8 VC USD G2 is sharper at 200mm F2.8? I find that hard to believe. Which test chart are you looking at for comparison and was the old Tamron tested on a 42 MP camera? As that will make a difference, especially if what you're using for comparison is a test done on a lower MP camera for the Tamron G2. You're right about the weight though, it's a bit disappointing that Sigma couldn't get closer to 1kg, that said 1.35kg isn't soo bad and it looks like it's well built.
10 месяцев назад
@@TheDka1 Have you noticed that the center of the 200 mm focal length at F2.8 is the weakest point of the new Sigma? The same time 200 mm at F2.8 is the strongest point of the Tamron from 2012. There are many cameras for testing with 45 mpx sensors, so you can check it for yourself.
@TheDka1
@TheDka1 10 месяцев назад
@ Ok, but the reason I'm asking is because you said "Tamron from 2012 (VC) is sharper then this lens @ 200 mm and F2.8. 200 mm focal length" - this is a definitive statement and usually would be qualified by at least using a comparison of the two lenses at the same resolution. So I don't really need to check it for myself; I'm asking if you used/found such a comparison (at the same, or at least similar resolution) to come to this conclusion, yes or no?

Hye I think there might be a sample issue on your end. I have looked at other reviews and they all seem to praise it for sharpness and watching your video, right away it looks way too soft compared to others. I think there might be a missalignemnt as it seems other samples are sharp in the centre and softer on the sides. Good call out for how many stops of stabilization it has though, literally no one I watched today mentioned a word about it.

Some of the design decision are baffling. That hood sucks, what wrong with a simple click in hood? The entire colar should be removable on all lenses like it is for example on my tamron 50 - 400. It would save a ton of weight for handheld shooters, not to mention the foot removal with multiple screws and "unclean" form when it is removed. Waiting for that Tamron 70-180 G2 review!

It's fantastic. Used it last week for film and photography (FX6 and A7IV) and it's a superb lens. Light, great features and the results are great. Two minor things so far: the hood is absurd and thanks to sony no teleconverters. The screw on knob hood is just not convenient in the field.

The lens might've been around 0.1 - 0.2kg (so 100-200 grams) lighter if that were removable. Anyway, the performance is good but if I were shooting with Sony I'd probably opt for the Tamron 70-180 G2 lens for the weight savings. Zeiss 135mm prime f2 certainly more sharp and 1 stop faster. It's not a substitute, but a more versatile lens. The APSC test shows that this lens struggles to satisfy such a sensor, and that's where you start seeing the differences between the newest lens generation. You can also stop changing cameras for the APSC test. Would rather be interesting to see as well a test with a 33MP sensor for people that don't need the high resolution, they might decide to buy a lens somebody on a 61MP sensor might not.

The reason I test at 42MP is because it's a happy medium between 24MP and 61MP, and it also makes test results more comparable to the 45MP sensors of Canon and Nikon FF cameras.

Are you subscribed to his Patreon? Have you made or consider making a monetary contribution? Maybe donate him the A7RV so he can do the tests you'd like to see? People really like to demand things without thinking how much they cost, as if RU-vid pays thousands each month enough to buy all the latest gear...

@JaySilva88 Truth be told, the request is not for me personally since I'm using APSC, but I see how many lenses are falling apart on the edges of the crop sensor that hold up pretty well on the 44MP. I like to advertise him on Reddit, where I tend to give plenty of advice to people. That's my contribution.

@christopherfrost I see your point, and I was already suspecting that. Looking at the APSC results and how many lenses start to fall apart in the edges, which still look fine on the 42MP sensor, my impression is that this compromise might not work that well. Is there no chance to ask Sony for a contribution? After all, you are featuring their bodies in every video, and as it currently stands, you are doing that for bodies that they don't sell anymore. Should be a clear win for them to provide you with their newest models.

If you need to step down to F4 in certain situations and focal range, I think the Sony FE 70-200mm F4 is better. I expected this lens to be excellent from F2.8 across the frame, but it can't compete with the Sony equivalent. Maybe in real-world photography, it performs better than the chart. We shall know after a few months when people will use it more and leave reviews. What is your opinion on this vs the Sony F4 version?

I think the lens has a noticeably softer centre than corners at 70mm, in both FF and APSC tests.

Its ok but I was expecting a bit more from sigma. I’m a big sigma fan. I know they had been making their lenses smaller and sharper

This is why Sony needs to keep pumping out Bodies. 3rd party is destroying sony's lens revenue. Great video.

i'm surprised how sigma always making such bulky bricks, definitely not versalite with 1.5kg weight, in addition, zoom ring at the end of the lens with opposite direction, bravo for this project, restricted to only 15fps, definitely not future proof, so no thank you, every one do better investment in GM II, because £1500 is just wast of money

the extended lens while zooming, no apeture ring, no arca swiss tripod mount. Just because you don't need it doesn't say there is no market for it. We own a couple of Sigmas (24-70 dg dn also a great lens) so this will fit in nicely

Mostly for durability being internal zooming with better build quality. Other than that there isn't much reason considering how much they improved the IQ of the G2 and that both can't be used with tele converters.

Internal zooming made it more expensive but still demanded in dusty and sandy areas.

I only use the a5100 for resolution tests at ISO 100. All the rest of my testing is done on the a7R III. Why would I get an a6700 just for resolution tests?

@JaySilva88

@@christopherfrost some people think one can have all the gear they want for free, or that RU-vid pays so well you can buy every new camera. They also fail to realise that nowadays new camera sensors have little impact on image quality and it's the processing power, autofocus and other features that makes it worth upgrading camera body. If you're doing a IQ test at ISO100 under controlled conditions a5100 vs a6700 makes no difference.
