Great review. You are always so clear & articulate with your reviews! You give the clear & solid information about everything you review - and you keep everything clean as well (which is a rare thing to see on YT sadly). I'll have to see when I get to that point of buying an 85, which I think I'd use more often. When I start doing Portrait work, a lot is probably going to be outdoors, so I'll have to figure out which would suit me best. Thanks for making these excellent reviews!

Just want to thank you for your exceptional and accurate review on this. That gave me the confidence to get a copy of it. I noticed some of the same AF behaviors you mentioned in your WEB review but absolutely manageable at my point of view. The result is anyway stunning wide open. I have to say that I was just more impressed about the results of the Tamron 15-30 as for a prime lens it's something expected to be good but for a zoom lens really impressive. I'm happy to have made the decision to buy the Sigma and thankful to your expertise pointing out the strength and weakness of this lens I'm pretty confident that it will serve my demands on a perfect portrait lens. Hopefully you will keep ongoing and congrats for your engagement from my side.

You need to adjust the micro focus on the Sigma. I had the same problem with chromatic aberrations, but found out that it only occurred with close range pictures. After 2 hours with the Sigma dock, they were gone. It's a hassle, but it makes a huge difference.

Have just purchased yesterday the Sigma Art 85mm F1.4 on the recommendation of your reviews.I am using it on my Canon EOS. 6D mk2...Blown away by the. sharpness.I have the battery grip which helps in balancing the lens.I have also used this lens on my EOS 77d. It becomes 135mm F1.8 again great sharpness.The EOS M6 produces great results as well.I have the electric viewfinder as the lens would be hard to use.I will keep watching your videos here in the United Kingdom especially the iso and shutter speeds to get good results from the lens.Merry Christmas to you and your family

Great review Dustin, this 85mm Art lens is a real gem. Definitely one big piece of glass but this apparently is what it takes to get tack sharp resolution across the frame shooting wide open. Thank you for sharing a wealth of knowledge on this top quality lens.
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 7 лет назад
I think you are right. I'm seeing a trend towards ever bigger lenses as lens makers try to manufacture lenses for high MP bodies. This is a huge lens, but it will test well and a lot of people will buy it based on that. I think the bigger issue will be if people will consistently reach for it because of its size.

There has been a firmware update to the lens that may help on that front, but the second time I looked at the lens, I looked at it on Sony where the focus issues don't exist the same way.

I've had a Sigma 85mm f1.4 for about 6 months now. I did a shoot the other day and found that a large number of my shots were just not focusing on the right place (where I thought I was focusing) - shooting wide open. I just put it down to me but then I was chatting with a friend who has the canon version (I'm on Nikon D850) and he mentioned that he had some focus issues and apparently it is a bit if a common problem. I did some test shots with a calibration image at both f8 & f1.4 and they were all terrible, apart from one at f1.4. In general most were best at wide open. I've just completed a calibration with Reikan's FoCal and now it is spot one. Definitely worth checking the calibration on these things. Shooting at f1.4 isn't at all forgiving :)
@DustinAbbottTWI

It's very rare that a lens like this doesn't require some calibration. I'm just glad you were able to successfully dial it in.

Sigma did an amazing job with this lens and should really be commended. I know they were reluctant to release an updated 85mm for quite a while, but they did a fine job. Again, as you pointed out those key features high degree of sharpness, high resolution, fast autofocus, near 0 vignetting, and quite smooth (even if not to some eyes convincingly artistic) bokeh, make this lens a very sensible buy for a lot of photographers. I suspect that at some point Sigma may do some tweaking to address CA, but honestly, I think this is the last 85mm we'll see from them for quite a few years. I think they're on to a 135mm and maybe a 200mm. They've got a lot of other lenses to get to, not to mention plans to start producing native lenses for the Sony E mount. I do have to say, I'm not seeing nearly the amount of CA you appear to have in your sample. It could be as simple as sample variation. However, I do wonder if it's just the slightest amount of micro mis-focus on the Canon. Just at the point where those light rays are starting to come together you could get a near miss if the lens stops short of perfect focus? The rays won't align and you'll get CA. I've done tests with full AF and full MF wide open and I'm not getting much CA. But then again, I'm shooting a mirrorless body, too. cheers, :)
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 7 лет назад
We'll see (re CA) when places like DXO do their testing. If you are shooting on mirrorless (I'm assuming an A7R of some kind), how is the balance?
@trevorpinnocky

Dustin Abbott the balance with my battery grip is perfect. Shooting without a battery grip would be more awkward and probably create muscle fatigue. A7r ii stills/a7s ii video

LOL, the Sigma is a great looking lens, very beefy and from what I seen the images are beautiful. Now, having said that, I am extremely happy with my new Tamron 85mm. It is hard for me to imagine that the Sigma could be much more better than it. My lens is super sharp a crossed the board with wonderful bokeh. And saved my self about $600.

Dustin - great honest review. In terms of the outer focus points, rule of 3rds etc, it is a problem on I think all Canon DSLRs - and yes - even on my new 1Dx_ii (you mentioned the 5D4 so yes both Canon's newest bestest cameras still suffer from this). I have tested the 1Dxii pretty well on the outer AF pts (using 35Lii @ F1.4) and the Tamron 45&85 and I can say that absolutely 100% the extreme outer focus points are nowhere near as good as the Center Double Cross Type AF Pt. I can however say that I did come up with an improvement - you must, at least on the 1Dxii, turn OFF the NON Cross Type points - and only use the Cross Type - it makes a noticeable improvement - so much so that the outer point on the 1Dxii is really not very good at all. Your review is spot on - it all comes down to the CA and whether or not you can live with it and that you must factor this into the actual performance, post CA correction, and whether or not the contrast is there - I think your Otus rendering perfectly showed this (and that is disappointing) because on paper this lens looked amazing. The other thing I think is working for the Tamron is that I believe it is slightly faster (T-Stop wise) than other similar type lenses (as an example if you shoot it at F2.8 versus the Canon 70-200 F2.8 II IS) it is almost 1/2 a stop brighter. I would be interested in one last test, if you happen to borrow the lens again, and that is using your 5D4, and pixel peeping, if you shot handheld at 1/80th, how many out of 10 can you get tack sharp versus the Tamron. Great review as usual. Paul
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 7 лет назад
I can definitely tell you that trying to handhold low shutter speeds with the ART is going to be a challenge. It's a big, heavy, long lens. That being said, I rarely do that even with lenses that do have VC like the Tamron. The risk of subject movement isn't worth it, and higher ISO bodies make the cost of upping the ISO setting much smaller. Regarding the light transmission point: the Sigma is exceptional in this regard. It is probably the brightest 85mm I've used.

@eivinha
@eivinha 7 лет назад
Fantasticly well done, you explain everything very clearly and informatively. Your notion of the lack of "magic" compared to the Otus is what interests me the most. To me this difference seems very pronounced. How would you subjectively compare it to the Canon 85 1.2L II with regards to bokeh, contrast, color, punch and "magic"? Would you also happen to know what the CA on this Art lens is like compared to the aforementioned Canon offering?
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 7 лет назад
The Canon also has quite a bit of CA, but manages to produce beautiful real world results. I sometimes refer to ART series lenses as "clinical". They have tons of sharpness and do most things "right" in a testable way, but I'm rarely blown away by the real world results. Zeiss lenses are different. They do have some flaws, but the rendering is often very, very special. If only they had AF...

@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 7 лет назад
Melvin Markowitz I haven't, actually. The Canon doesn't look great by comparison on chart tests, but we all know it produces some pretty special field results.
7 лет назад
Thanks for a very thourough review. I often use the Canon 100mm Macro L-version, which is far lighter than this, but do allow using a tripod collar for better balance. With such a heavy lens as the Sigma I would think that might have been a useful option. What is your experience of that, is it very front-heavy, or does it balance reasonably well?
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 7 лет назад
That will depend on the body you are using. I mostly tested it on a full frame 5D Mark IV. It is somewhat front heavy there, but if you shoot with the left hand supporting (as I do), it's fine. But yes, it is getting very close to territory where some shooters would like to use a tripod collar.
@williamc4353
@williamc4353 7 лет назад
This was great info... I am on the fence between it and the Canon 85L and now I am leaning a little more toward the Sigma because of you... I am a wedding Photographer so need some speed for focusing and this might be the better choice.. Don't really need the 1.4 will shoot around 2.0 just to make sure both eyes are in focus.. If you have another idea for a 85 lense I would love to hear about it. I feel your reviews is honest and your not getting paid to sell one of another which is great to have a honest review. Thank you for your info again... you put allot of work into the test and we the shooters out there appreciate it. Bill
@DustinAbbottTWI

If you are going to shoot mostly at f/2 then the Tamron 85mm f/1.8 is a solid alternative. You gain the image stabilizer, it's much smaller and lighter, and has more robust weather sealing. More vignette, but less CA. Focuses nearly as quickly. Not quite as ultimately sharp, but can have a bit more contrast due to less CA.
@naveensmart87
@naveensmart87 6 лет назад
9:55 if you focus any lens at infinity or far there won't be noticeable background difference.. A 85 mm lens is more usable for a half length shot .. so frame shots like that and show if there is any difference in background blur ..

Another great content review Dustin which you recommend between the Sigma 85mm 1.4 or the 135mm 1.8
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 6 лет назад
I like the look of images from a 135mm better, but the 85mm focal length is often more versatile.
@EDCGadgets
@EDCGadgets 6 лет назад
I have used both lenses as well, and while the 135 has a slightly softer bokeh, I would definitely recommend the 85 Art over the 135. Simple reason: there are MUCH more things that you can shoot with the 85, than with the 135. I personally don't like the 135 focal length, because it removes too much environment from the context, but it still does not offer the same amount of compression as a 200mm f2.8 image offers. If you own the 50 Art, then you may consider the 135 for a different look, but other than that, I could shoot an entire day of portrait sessions with the 85 Art exclusively, and still provide hume variety of different looks.

Hi Dustin Abbott, Great review. You don't have to compare lens to know if a 85 is a real 85mm, you can measure it! Focal distance = [focus distance] X [sensor size] / [Field of view] Let's say you fill your frame with something 1 meter wide (a testing chart for instance) = 1000 milimeters and you use a fullframe sensor (36mm wide). With this in mind, a lens with real 85mm would need to be 2361mm away from that testing chart in order to fill the frame with the testing chart: 85mm = 2361mm x 36mm / 1000mm Cheers!
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 7 лет назад
The only problem with that method is when a lens "focus breathes" and shows a different focal length at the "chart distance" than it does at infinity. I like to do real world tests to see how a lens performs where it will actually be used. But you are definitely right about a more technical way to test focal length.

Slow AF? Interesting. There aren't really any 85mm lenses that are much faster. The Sigma is faster by a hair, but they are roughly similar. Try turning off the VC and see if you don't acquire focus faster.

The newer lens has a very different personality. Less traditional rendering and more very clean and crisp. It's huge compared to the older lens, obviously, so some people are going to prefer the older lens for its size...and it is still a very good lens.
@EdoHDpro
@EdoHDpro 7 лет назад
Dustin Abbott that is exactly my concern, the difference in personality. It's like the difference between crisp Sony cameras and mellow Canon cameras, not fair argument but you get my point. I love Canon personality and would never change for Sony, despite being less crisp. So I wonder if this lens have that same/better dreamy/creamy render (not fair use of word) on a good take as the old one did. Or is it better in terms of bokah?

@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 7 лет назад
+Peter Fernandez I do think the Milvus is probably the superior lens in its overall "look" or "rendering", though the Sigma has less vignette and is equally sharp. I prefer the contrast from the Milvus (the Sigma has more CA). Bokeh is a bit smoother from the Milvus. A MF lens isn't for everyone, but if that doesn't bother you, and you can afford it, the Milvus is a gorgeous lens.

That really depends on how proficient you are at manual focusing. I would say that I slightly prefer the rendering from the Milvus, but if you aren't a strong manual focuser you will end up with a lot of missed shots. Most people will be more comfortable with the Sigma.

I'm using a Canon 80D with Canon 50mm f1. 8 STM lens for portrait work. Is it worth buying this lens to use on a crop sensor body? Would it be significantly better in performance (sharpness, bokeh etc)? Or should i stay with the 50mm STM until i can afford a full frame camera body?
@DustinAbbottTWI

It would definitely be a stronger performer for portraits, but just know it will be 1) very large and 2) a little long in some situations. You will probably only be able to shoot head and shoulders in a typical room.

I had to check the review after looking at the portrait in Flickr. Another terrific review. Worth watching even without having a great interest in the lens. My bias toward Tamron may be showing, but, from this review, I would probably get the Tamron. I have grown weary of the CA distortion in several of my lenses and have been looking for low ca values in my lens shopping. CA's also detract from black and white conversions. Even corrected, there can be halos around contrasty edges. The other issue you mention is accuracy of focus using the off center focus points. I am a big user of off center focus points in my photography using focus/recompose less and less. Those two factors weigh heavily for me in your review. Plus, the actual weight, cost, real focal length and stabilization all are pluses for the Tamron. The light transmission may be the Sigma's best feature in my view and the recent Tamron 150-600 G2 also seems to lose out in that regard. Overall, for me, the Tamron wins. But, one question: how does the 85 art compare to the 85 ex in overall image quality. The earlier model may be a steal at this point.
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 7 лет назад
Larry, the new lens has a VERY different personality from the old one. It's sharper and with less vignette, obviously, but it also has a more "modern" rendering that is more digital and less analog. Some will love it; others won't. It is very much a taste thing.
@lsaideOK
@lsaideOK 7 лет назад
When I first got into Flickr, viewing a wide variety of images, I was often taken by images from the old Sigma 85. The bokeh seemed very sweet. It might have been the quality of the photographers. Vignetting and some loss of sharpness are not necessarily deal killers for me if I like the overall image quality and, especially, the bokeh.

Excellent review as usual! I was in need to replace my Nikon 85 f1.8 G and the Sigma 85 f1.4 ART and the Tamron 85 f1.8 VC were my two top choices. The Sigma 85 ART looks to be very popular at lens rental companies and I haven't been able to rent it,yet. So I purchased the Tamron 85 1.8 VC. I was pleasantly surprised that the Tamron is sharper @ wide open than the Nikon 85 1.8 G. I didn't expect that so it was a real surprise. The Tamron's bokeh also looks to be bit smother( my subjective view) than the Nikon. And it handles CA much better than the Nikon 85 1.8 G and my 135 f2 DC. While I was watching your review of the Sigma 85 1.4 ART, two things caught my attention. One of them is the lens handling of CA. There's no doubt that the Tamron 85 1.8 VC handles CA much better than the Sigma. I took some test shots with my Tamron and I picked a very bright background. I saw no CA or a little if you blow up the image to 100-200%. Also you mentioned about the Sigma's AF inconsistency if you moved the AF point from the center to the edge,while the Tamron nailed the shots in the same situation. This is very important to me since I don't always shoot the subject in the center. After I rented a Nikon 105 1.4 E for my paid shoot, it's really hard to pick another lens to purchase but it's out of my budget now and I can afford the Sigma if I really want to. But for now, I'm happy with my Tamron 85 1.8 VC and I will rent the Sigma to see how I will like it. Again, thank you for your detailed, complete review of the Sigma 1.4 ART!!!

I own a Sigma 150-600 C and my copy wasn't sharp at all right out of the box. But I spent good time to calibrate the lens with the Dock and I was able to calibrate it to my satisfaction. Hopefully, my rental copy won't give me a problem.

Yesterday I got the lens I purchased off of Ebay. I shoot a Nikon D700 body. As I found when I owned a D7000 years ago which I had to dial in focus adjustments into the camera for every lens I owned... frankly the focus on that body was horrible. I finally sent it to Nikon for adjustment and they calibrated the focus plane by the sensor its for the optical viewfinders focus system. Well back to the 85mm Nikon ART.... I got the lens I purchased in good condition used on Ebay for $730. I have shot about 100 test photo's at various distances and lighting conditions many at 1.4.... I am pleased to say the focus is spot on.... very fast and no misses in 100 photo's. I wanted to post this comment for people wanting to buy this lens... my comment is the lens I got has excellent focus even at 1.4. If you have problems its probably your camera body not the lens.

Thanks for the review. Sigma Art lenses produce very sharp, professional looking images, but I've always felt they're missing the magic, as you say. I sold my Sigma Art 50mm. I currently own a Cannon 85mm 1.8 Ultrasonic. I use it with my Canon EOS 3 and my GH5 w/adapter. Fireworks, landscapes, architecture, time lapse. I keep hearing raving reviews about the Sigma lenses, but I can't get myself to buy one again. I found it very hard (and at times frustrating) to create interesting photos with it. Bokeh rendering is a highly subjective category, so I would say that looking at a lot of photos from the lenses you are considering and choosing what rendering you prefer is probably wise. Renting the contenders for a week is another lower risk approach.

A AF tracking test (vs. the Tamron) would be interesting, maybe a runner like of your other reviews (your son). And maybe you can tell me/us why you kept the Tamron 85 1.8 VC :)? Because of the lightweight and the VC?^^
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 6 лет назад
I think the Tamron is a great balance of size, IQ, and the VC is very useful.

Thank you Dustin, as always a great review and fast reply :)! I have watched your two big 85mm comparision videos now. I m looking for the Tamron for such a long time. Here in Germany you can have 5 years of warranty If you registry your Tamron lenses. Thats really nice I think. But I need first a 24-70 2.8 IS for events and I own already the Canon 135 2.0L - but a IS would be so helpfull in bad light situations.

I post lot of my photos with chromatic aberration but no one told me that my photos have it.. bokeh, contrast and auto focus is what really matters.. So I do see that Tamron is much better without considering the price difference.. because sigma lost focus twice every ten photos I took.. And I regret buying it rather than tamron or even nikkor 85 f1.4
@DustinAbbottTWI

Autofocus accurately is a HUGE consideration.

Camera? Or lens? The lens is fine, though it's focus isn't the smoothest or quietest for video AF.

Great review. There isn't a better review out there! I'm really on the fence about this. I shoot to edit so don't really need the "Magic", although nice. I can always make the magic in post. What I wonder about is the benefit of VC. I imagine being able to push longer into golden hour shoots without flash and end with more keepers using VC. But, I also think the overall IQ of the Sigma Art at 1.6 or 1.8 would be much nicer than the Tammy wide open. I don't know what to do.
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 7 лет назад
+Cris Franco That's a tough call. If you have a high megapixel body VC has a lot of value, though I do tend to keep shutter speed up because of subject movement anyway.

Hi Dustin, I bit the bullet and went with the Sigma 85mm Art. It's on backorder so I'm awaiting delivery. Thanks for your great review.

did they finally fix that back focus issue that they had with the 35mm art? I dont wanna buy any sigma lens because that was a big issue with their art lenses
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 7 лет назад
I had much, much better focus results with this lens than I did with the 35 ART. I think they've mostly solved the issues.
@isaacmijangos
@isaacmijangos 7 лет назад
You think that they would announce that they finally figured out one of the biggest issue on their most popular lens.
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 7 лет назад
isaacmijangos They did, really. They emphasized the higher torque motor (30% more torque) that is producing more repeatable results. And that may reveal where part of the problem was on the 35 ART - a slightly underpowered HSM motor.

Oh for sure. Do you know where i can find that article on that. I usually get my info from fstopper and petapixel and i guess they never covered it

Is this lense better for sony a6400?
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 2 года назад
Better than what? I think it is too big a lens for such a compact body. I would recommend something like the Samyang AF 75mm F1.8 instead - it's a much better pairing with your camera.

Put the lens in the wrong kind of situation and the CA is very strong.

Catalin: Do you use the Canon 85mm f/1.4 IS it for stills? No problems with chromatic aberration in real world usage? And is AF fast and accurate, sticks with the subject, focusing performance in outer regions/focusing points? I mainly want an 85mm f/1.4 for indoor events and sports. What Canon body do you use it with? Any good with a crop body? Sorry for the many questions but I am after the real experiences of people that actually put their money where their mouth is :-) Tnx in advance.
