Today I got to test the MC-21 adapter on a S1R with: Canon 85 1.2L, Sigma ART 35mm, 50mm and the Bokehmaster 105mm 1.4. I'm sorry to say for anyone that's interested that the focus was horrible.. Not even close to what can be called acceptable. It was a lot of hunting, pictures out of focus when taking shots at objects with good contrast etc. Compared to my Canon IV it's like going from a Ferrari to a Fiat 500. Its not even close.. Too bad as I had so high expectations for this camera and wanted to get one. I did not expect it to be perfect by any means but the Sony MC-11 adapter is a huge improvement.
As always, thank you for the video and taking the time out to post a video for those who may be interested in this adapter and canon lens,. Me personally, I went with the mc-21 for the SA mount only because I picked up an 85mm 1.4 Art lens for $600 (no tax) in the SA mount. I know that's a very good lens and the SA MC-21 mount adapter is much cheaper. I have the adapter already, just waiting for the Lens from Adoroma, which should be here on Monday. I will be using it on the my S1R. Again I was not planning on using the adapte, as I have the native 24-105 and the awesome S 50mm F1.4 Pro, it's was only because I got a top rated used lens for such a good price. Great video and thanks for your time and effort, I really like when you post stuff about the S Series, they have been very useful to me and I'm sure to others as well. Kind Regards PS dpreview sent me here.
hi mcsey2k1, yes one advantage of MC-21 is that it opens up opportunity to shoot with some cheaper lenses from another lens mount! Especially the second hand one. Thanks for watching my videos and there will surely be more S series contents coming VERY soon :)
I have used this on SL2 for canon 50/1.2L. AFS is slow but works somehow. I use it manually instead and apart from the annoyance of being shown an aperture of 1.3 at best in exit, it is a beautiful experience. Recommended.
I've been waiting for this test Richard - thanks! I would love to see the test with some other 3rd party ef lenses like those from Yongnuo/Samyang or Rokinon.
I tested my Canon 24-70mm f2.8 + MC-21 on Lumix S1 today. Auto focus is acceptable to me. However, LED on MC-21 is off. Is that normal for non Sigma Lens ?
Brilliant Rich! Just switching to S1 and found your videos so useful. L-mount lenses’ selection is still poor and those glasses are so pricy. However, need some workable autofocus for my footage and your video clarified major issues :) thanks man!
The MC-21 dose not have a USB port and there are no Sigma L mount USB lens docs yet so there is currently no way to update the MC-21. It might not be the converter that needs an update, Panasonic might be able to update the camera to open up AF-C. As for lens AF speed, these lens are designed for DSLRs so will not match the speed of a lens designed specifically for Mirrorless as both are optimised to focus in different ways (mirrorless lens tend to have smaller/lighter focus groups and motors optimised for small rapid changes in direction). They could possibly improve speed a bit with camera and lens updates though.
@@PaulMonaghan Feel free to be more optimistic, the FE mount Sigma ART lenses autofocus very fast. I expect L mount Sigma ART lenses would perform the same.
@@shang-hsienyang1284 I hope so but since Sony uses PDAF that has an advantage using lens designed for PDAF. Still I'm using SA mount lens just now and I'm happy with the autofocus for what I shoot :). I am very optimistic about this L mount alliance :), its early days and some time is needed to optimise everything :)
Hello Can I ask you? - It is possible to use lenses from "Samyang Cinema - EF mount, without any problems with this Leica Adapter?- Problems like: crop factor or vignetting?
Richard Im curious, are the compatibility issues with canon ef lenses the same between S1 and S1R? I rented the S1 a last week and tried some of my Canon ef lenses. They all worked. It was a little slow for focus but nothing crazy. The worst one was with my 85mm 1.8 ultrasonic version. It took it I would 4 tries to focus. Also these are some features greyes out like in time lapse mode u can only use exposure leveling in A, P and S mode. Not manual. Bracketing also doesnt work.
Thanks, a very helpful review. I'm very much considering switching from Canon (old 6D) to Panasonic's new S5, and this converter seems the way to go to use my L lenses in the short term. Regards, Craig
Great review Richard, I am currently using Sigma MC11 adapter for my Sony A73 for EF-FE. Autofocus for photo works great on peope/faces, however the AF is not as good when you are trying to shoot subjects as it starts to hunt a little. It could be due to the AF system of Sony, but when I am using the native Sony lens, it doesn't have this problem. In saying so, its still a great item to have when you have a mixed lens system.
Hey Andy, thanks!! Have you switched to team Sony 100% now? Or still 50/50 Canon/Sony? Yeah i guess adapters are never going to 100% as good as native, but as you said, it's quite handy when you already have lenses from another system, or there is a lens that is not available natively on a new system!
Almost full Sony for me now, loving the dynamic range of the camera. If the S1 weren,t so heavy with limited selection of lens for now, S1 would be my choice.
I'm considering this because as of April 2021 there is still no 'affordable' Panasonic 50mm or 35mm f1.8! I'm not exactly enthralled with L mount progress.
Hi Joe, I have not tried it myself but I am quite sure it works well, apart from the fact those lenses won't cover the full image circle of the full frame sensor
Did you use the MC-21 Sigma SA to L mount or the MC-21 Canon EF to L mount adapter in this video? I am wondering if the Sigma SA to L mount will also work with Canon EF lenses, since it's a lot cheaper.
@@TheRealRichardWong Thanks for your answer. I just noticed I asked the question wrong XD. What I wanted to ask is if you used the Adapter specifically for Sigma Canon EF lenses or the one meant for Canon lenses. There appear to be two diffrent models of the same adapter, one for Sigma lenses with EF mount and one for Canon and I am wondering if the Sigma one will work with canon lenses since it's technically the same EF mount. Sorry for the confusion :)
Have you tried the Sigma teleconverters with this? I'm seeing an consistent issue on the S1R when using MC-21, and TC-1401/2001 with good Sigma lenses. It drops to APS-C mode and that makes it take 20MP pictures, which negates the entire point of having a teleconverter. Furthermore, it also disables High Res mode, and due to dropping to only 20MP, it even disables 6K Photo mode :( Any tricks, or have you heard anything from Panasonic/Sigma about fixing this?
Hi Richard, thanks for this video. Have you tried the Sigma ef lenses and if so, how do they compare to the canon ef lenses on the S1/S1H for af? I would hope it would be faster.
I have the MC-21 set up with my 17-40 f4 and just happened to notice Post Focus is not available to be set. Is this due to the adapter? Also, do some lenses work even though they don’t light up the LED on adapter?
I don't know to be honest I rarely use postfocus but possibly due to the fact the autofocus is too slow to capture all the required photos for postfocus? Sorry also not sure about what happens if light not light up, I guess you can give it a try and see? :)
Hello Richard, please i was wondering if i can use the Sigma MC-21 EF to L mount converter/adapter with a sigma 18-35mm lens on the lumix S1H full frame mode without vignetting ?
Hi Richard, I use the mc11 with Sony A73 and the Sigma 18-35. It automatically switches over to super 35 so there’s no vignetting. I believe the Pana S1H should work the same.
How does auto focus work with Sigma Art Lenses in Video? I have a MC-11 with a Sony A7R II body and the auto focus in video with my 35mm f/1.4 Art is very fast. It would be dissapointing if there is no auto focus without hitting shutter with MC-21 Adapter. Thank you if you can answer my question!
And of course on Panasonic it is also a Contrast AF so it will be slower, but want to know if the Art lenses have any form of AF in video without shutter click.
You can technically mount any EF lens to this adapter. Certain functionality might not electronically translate over but it will mount. You should have no issues if everything is manual
Sigma MC-21 EF to L adapter causes aperture to change depending on how close or far you are focussing on the Canon EF 100mm f2.8 L Macro IS USM lens. Very frustrating☹
Does it actually change the actual physical aperture size? (I.e. do you see the aperture hole decrease in size) Or the size of the aperture hole doesn't change, it is just the aperture size reported by the camera change as you change focus to macro? If later, this is unavoidable because the effective focal length increases when you taking macro photos, and therefore the effective aperture size also changes. I believe not all cameras report the effective aperture correctly on the display so you may not notice this with some cameras
@@TheRealRichardWong both the reported iris and actual aperture changes. it gets darker on close focus, also dismounted the lens when the camera is on and it showed the blade closed.
@@simonc4764 What you are describing (gets darker when close focus) appears to be the result of effective aperture becomes smaller when focus distance is smaller. For a 1x f/2.8 macro lens, usually the effective aperture would change from f/2.8 at infinity focus to f/5.6 at 1:1 macro focus. Do you actually see the size of the aperture hole change (smaller) when you change focus distance to macro? If not it is just the result of effective aperture
@@TheRealRichardWong Aperture closing down get darker. This lens does not do that with native EF mount camera bodies, just with this Sigma MC-21 adapter.
@@simonc4764 hey Simon, are you saying you can see the aperture hole size become physically smaller as you change focus to closer? Sorry I'm still trying to understand if this is what you are seeing, as I don't have a EF macro lens to test myself . I'm still assuming what you are seeing the result of effective aperture changes as your focus close, which affects every single lens and camera. (search "effective aperture" on this page to read a bit more) www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-RF-100mm-F2.8-L-Macro-IS-USM-Lens.aspx
Both Sony and Canon lenses are optimized to work with PDAF. Control signals from a CDAF controller (Panasonic) don't translate very well to lenses optimized for PDAF. (It's a limitation of the adapter. Sophisticated adapters would do a better job but would likely be very expensive)
