Sign language teachers on social media

Since the rise of concerns of hearing people teaching signs on social media for clout, their gain/profit, etc (and it has been a problem for a long time anyway), I’ve gotten a lot of similar questions of people who want to learn sign language from the right sources, but they aren’t sure how to “tell.” Clearly, there are many ways to identify someone you shouldn’t be learning sign language from, but I figured I could share the top 3 to start with. Feel free to add more in the comments below. Bottom line, it’s about opportunities for Deaf people to take that space on social media- #learnfromdeafpeople . Hope this helps in a way! There are three parts that explains the “why” briefly.

I remember starting to learn ASL over two years ago, a big youtuber's videos consisting of heavily reused two second clips of her saying "it looks like you're milking a cow", or "bored looks like picking your nose" My Deaf coworker has an alternate two-handed sign for bored that looks like two sideways birds fluttering at the mouth and ear, while making motorboat mouth, and even deflating your body as part of the expression, that sign in particular has sooo many subtle nuances in different areas all at once, it would make a perfect example to explain how ASL is faaaaar more than the basic sign.

So (maybe I missed this if you explained it) I usually watch reels with no sound, but some Deaf do vocalize as they sign. Are you referring to them as people we shouldn't go to first to learn ASL? And I know they are Deaf, not faking it, but maybe were taught to use their voice. And I do see a difference between the Deaf who don't vocalize. My Deaf friends who are silent, use ASL grammar. I know I tend to use my voice less when I use correct ASL grammar.

Well done, and beautifully explained! Particularly about simcom. I am on the fence about skilled interpreters and CODAs, depending on how well it's done and whether or not there are already videos available in the space that are fulfilling that particular purpose. For example, if an interpreting instructor - who is a skilled interpreter himself - wants to create a video for his students with vocabulary on a certain topic and cannot find any that has that particular collection. I think I'd be fine with that. But in general, I find it annoying when I find instructional ASL videos by hearing people.

LOVE this Renca. Hope it goes super viral. I’m hearing and I HATE when hearing people post ASL videos with the exception of CODA Brothers, Melissa Cayton, and Amber Galloway (all of whom have earned respect in the Deaf community before posting). Why the F do people post crappy videos of themselves butchering ASL - I feel like if it was a spoken language they were learning they wouldn’t be so quick to “show off”. Thanks for all your videos!!❤

"I feel like if it was a spoken language they were learning they wouldn’t be so quick to “show off”." Yes. I think you're right about that.

Yes, that! Good advice, but many hearing people purposefully conceal their status on social media. Any tips on how to tell if a person claiming to be an expert is actually hearing or Deaf?

I ask straight out when I suspect a person is hearing. I recently came across a guy who really made an excellent video, but I couldn't tell if he was hearing, Deaf, or a CODA. Ask. I think most people would not lie.
