Thank you so much for your videos. I spent 4 days learning the 100 signs. I have social anxiety so actually speaking to people is hard, so I can't imagine if I had to sign to someone, but at least I know a few things just in case.

@ChrisGorges 4 года назад
Thanks, I'm glad you found this series helpful. Having social anxiety must be very challenging and I hope it is something that gets better with time for you. Let me know what kind of signs you would like to learn next or of you'd like a video about overcoming anxieties
@OckGal
@OckGal 4 года назад
@@ChrisGorges Oh if you had a way to overcome anxiety that I haven't tried, I'd be very surprised. :D 2 years of therapy and a dozen medications didn't do it, nor did the "just ignore it" or "just go out there and socialize" methods. But even without the anxiety, I now have MS so that cuts down my socializing even more and leaves me with more time to learn ASL. :) I'll have to catch up on your other videos and let you know. I only just finished the 100 so plenty more on your channel to dive into! Thanks!
@ChrisGorges

@@OckGal Sorry to hear about all of that. However, never give up hope. I've known a few people that have struggled with anxiety or depression for years and years, and eventually they find that one thing that helps make life a bit easier. I actually have a student right now that suffers from severe social anxiety and trauma and is mute, however over the past few months she has been starting to put herself out there and start communicating with others. Just one small step at a time. Take the time to celebrate the small victories along the way. Anyways, hope you enjoy the videos :)

How would I ask someone if they want help? Can “help me” (the directional sign) be used as a question?
@ChrisGorges
@ChrisGorges 4 года назад
Great questions. You would use the sign for help-me moving towards yourself with eye-brows lifted ... it could be signed a few different ways depending on your local community and the specific person you signing to ... but a few ways could be "you help-me can?" ... "help-me you can?" ... "can you help-me?" etc

In most cases, if the word "do" is used in the middle of a sentence (typically referring to an action of some sort) then use the sign for action. If it is a question, then use the other form of do (sometimes referred to as do-do)

You could sign "I hearing, but talk can't." You can do a quick google search for each of those words in ASL and then string them together to make your sentence. I hope that helps!

I have a question, is that for the word hearing or I hear could I say I can hear or i can hearing
@ChrisGorges
@ChrisGorges 3 года назад
The sign shown in the video is to identify yourself as a hearing person (noun) and a different sign would typically be used to describe you hearing something (verb)

I'd like to know how to explain to a deaf person that I am learning ASL without seeming like a faker. I know I would never be able to carry on a conversation unless they signed slowly. I'm a quick learner but I want to tell them that I'm being sincere without being awkward. Any tips?
@ChrisGorges
@ChrisGorges Год назад
Just be authentic and honest. Communicating with someone in an unfamiliar language is always going to be awkward at first and that's okay. One thing that can backfire is giving off the impression that we are more fluent than we currently are and we may end up being even more embarrassed in the end. Just go ahead and do your best and make sure you focus on achieving the clearest communication possible with he current skills you have... with time and experience you'll continue to improve and get better and better.

Can the sign for "do" (the question one) be used for questions such as "Do you like this?" or "Do you know what this means?" Also, for the "not" sign, is that applicable to other sentences? Like "This is not mine"? Also, your videos are very helpful! I especially like the narration along with showing the signs. It gives me a better understanding of what you're doing, so that I know I'm not seeing/doing the sign wrong.
@ChrisGorges
@ChrisGorges 4 года назад
Those are great questions! For the sentences you mentioned, the sign "do" would typically not be used. For example, "do you like this" would normally be signed "you like?" or "do you know what this means" would normally be signed "mean what? you know?" or something similar. For the word "not" as in "this is not mine", some would use the sign for "not" but others may sign something like "that mine? head-shake-no" I'm glad that you are finding the videos helpful, if you ever want to set up a brief meeting with me, you can use this link to set up a time calendly.com/aslbasics/consultation

That's great, here are some online ASL dictionaries that you might find really helpful where you can type in a word and it'll show you a sign. Keep in mind, often times there is more than one way to sign a word, but it can be a good way to get started learning the words you need aslbasics.com/free-asl-resources/ Feel free to check out some of my previous videos as well where I go through various topics such as colors, basic phrases, animals, and things like that
