A bit of vaseline on the hair (side or back of head) is what I was taught. When I was a signwriter.. For picking up loose leaf.

Hi James, yet vasaline is perfect for it. Probably should have mentioned in the video. But thank you

I hadn't heard of the "Stinky Rotten Eggs thing" I'm sure we just used Baby Powder "Talc" to stop sticking. I was trained as a Singwriter starting my apprenticeship in '77 but due to health haven't worked in the industry for 23 years and only getting back into it just for fun recently. I'd love to see a video on the egg thing.
@lucpet95

We also used to to add a little Varnish into Yellow sign enamel to slow drying while using a test painted piece elsewhere to check when it was ready for gilding. This allows you to complete all the writing and then all the gilding.
@lucpet95

It might have been Talc and or French chalk to prevent sticking my memory is slowly coming back to me lol Could also be the same thing.

Hi Luke, thanks for the comment. Yeah you use egg whites. Not sure if they have to be rotten... but mine certainly are! Will probably show that in a video soon.

Do you stick that goldleaf directly on 1-shot paint? Im suprised the paint dont dry off before you put the goldleaves on 🤔 Nice work!
@mortenhansen3455
@mortenhansen3455 Год назад
I remember the first time I ever had to use one-shot. For me as an artist seeing that paint just cover a surface with one stroke literally made me laugh out loud in pure joy! New tech's or not, your result is very, very cool! Oh and by the way, regarding to the see through gilding glue. One drop of imitation gold in a small cup holding the glue, will fix that problem, and then it's very easy to see how far you've gone. :-) Other than that. What kind of material are you painting on?
@theletterhead
@theletterhead Год назад
It was always such a good paint. Things have slipped din recently years and I mostly use ronans 1 stroke now as it dries much quicker and is less smelly

I am curious about the yellow lettering medium. Was it gold sizing? I ask because most sizing I have used is semi-clear. My only guess is you sized the yellow paint, but I am really stumped, because the "gold" stuck to the yellow. Many thanks for sharing a great video with "Good Mistakes".
@theletterhead
@theletterhead 5 месяцев назад
Hi mate, the yellow enamel is 1shot imitation gold paint. I would not normally recommend using a colored sign enamel for gilding in this way. But 1shot imitation gold stays open (seemingly on purpose) making it an option for gilding. Traditional gold size is nearly clear and is more standardly used. I've know people to put a bit of imitation gold into gold size to make it more visible. Hope this helps.

Yeah, most colour's won't work. But 1shot imitation gold does for this. Otherwise, use a gold size

This sign is for indoors. Not really sure what to to with it yet. It's sat behind my work desk at the moment 😅. It's on the ever increasing to-do list.

great video!! - im about to paint on some skateboards and use some gold leaf - to get the leaf to stick you just use the tackiness of the gold paint? - no kind of size or anything?
@theletterhead
@theletterhead 7 месяцев назад
I would normally use a size. Or mix a size with a small amount of imitation gold. But imitation gold 1shot can perform most small tasks. I would not substitute with other colors or brands as they can dry too quickly.

I thought composition leaf will oxidize if its not too coated. How do you keep that from happening? Lovely sign and loved your video !
@theletterhead
@theletterhead Год назад
It certainly will if left exposed to moisture. Truth be told it's mostly sat tucked away. I have an art show soon so I may see if I can sell it there, I'm seriously lacking in space 😅

How do you brush off the excess gold without brushing away your chalk lines?
@theletterhead
@theletterhead Год назад
Hello Charlotte, I think it is more to do woth the way the chalk is applied. I have traced mine out quite hard from the paper. If I had used a pounce drawing, the chalk would probably fly away as it was not pressed into the surface.
@theletterhead
@theletterhead Год назад
I hope that helps in some way
@pask7965
@pask7965 Год назад
Hi mate I was just wondering what you used to get the "sketch" lines down on the wood and how they were so resilient to the burnishing of the gold leaf? I assumed the secondary dropshadow lines were going to disappear but they hung in there. is there a special type of pencil?
@theletterhead
@theletterhead Год назад
Hi pask, as the lines were traced on kinda rough the lines stayed on. Can be a blessing or a curse sometimes if they show. It's frustrating when a pounce line can get brushed off.

Great work ! why did you apply gold leaves on imitation gold painting ? Is this painting dedicated to gold leaf work ? Or any paint can do the job ?
@theletterhead
@theletterhead Год назад
Hiya, inusenimitation gold paint as it means that any minor misses will be less noticeable as it is a close colour. Other colours may show more. Although technically if the paint is tacky most oil enamels should be good.

@theletterhead
@theletterhead Год назад
Hi tilly, I used egg whites in the background and let it dry. Then I paint and gild and the gold won't stick to the background. Sometimes gold is imperfect anyway but you should get good results with that process.
