Yeah, just a technical error with the video. Our epic lack of charisma is laid bare when you take away the video! Oh well...

It's still the Oberheim and Minimoog phase of Rush so it's got that going for it.

"Something horrible happened". Yeah, that pretty much sums up the 80's in most things. "Analogue Kid" is really good though, it's the only one that rocks.

First of all, I enjoyed this podcast very much and would like to add my two cents :). Personally I like 80s a lot. In my opinion, in spite of commercial side of the music business rising to the forefront, a big chunk of 80s pop is still a good, greatly performed and written music. I mean, just listen to the backing track on Like A Virgin. Most of the time I have no problem with the 80s production and all, so MJ, Prince and Madonna for example are still up there for me alongside with The Beatles, Elvis, Miles Davis, Hendrix and others.

I really liked countdown! Love the minimoog and bass pedals on this album. This album and grace under pressure are my favorite rush albums and that really pisses a lot of people off. Ha ha. In the old days I hated these albums they grew on me over the years

I totally agree and it was like what a lot of bands were doing when we hit the 80's changing their style to try and fit in with the limelight and I would not rate any of their albums that came after Moving Pictures they are not in the same league I am afraid. I would not say it was a bad album but neither is it a good album in my book. My favourite album of theirs is Farewell To Kings and always has been. Even the songs that Rush wrote for their first 3 albums are more memorable than anything on Signals.

What was wrong with the 1980s? Partially breakups, burnout and families. Genesis suddenly became an empty vessel in 1980. Yes broke up in 1979, when Anderson and Wakeman left, ELP seemed to have burned out by the end of the Seventies, Pink Floyd's The Wall was epic but a more sterile "rock album", with little substantial following that, even from Waters (although I think that it was a bit harsh to compare Radio KAOS and Peter Gabriel's "So" with 90125 !!: that 1984 incarnation of "Yes" was a band called Cinema, containing Squire, White and Rabin, which Anderson joined and Yessified), Jethro Tull and The Moody Blues seemed to lose inspiration around 1979, as did Queen, Bowie went commercial, etc. Gabriel kept up a certain standard but went down a rigidly austere world music path after the first two albums. I see the period as lasting from about 1965 to 1978, and one also had the factor of young musicians reaching family life age. However, there was definitely an element of a certain Zeitgeist being lost, and, as somebody once pointed out, by the early 1980s there was also less competition to spur people on. Even the mighty Peter Hammill (van der Graaf Generator) did his best work in the Seventies. I will give a shout out to Roy Harper, Peter Hammill and Leonard Cohen for soldiering on. Now, King Crimson...............

We *will* be back, my friend! We have videos ready to go, just been delayed by big stuff once again. Saw them on Tuesday, btw! It was so very great to see them at all I don't think I can be very objective about it, tbh. Phil's son was better than I expected (I'd say much better than going from J Bonham to his son). Check out the setlist - I think it was great! Also, I had to go to into work late both Tuesday and Wednesdays because I am so very old and didn't want to be tired....
