We all have coping mechanisms to help us get through life’s ups and downs. Some people choose to exercise, others might bite their fingernails, take a daytrip out to nature, the list goes on and on.
While the intention behind coping mechanisms is always well and good, it’s clear that some strategies are more effective than others in helping us heal over the long term. In fact, some coping mechanisms are actually hurting us more than they’re helping us.
My guest today is going to walk us through how to determine if our coping mechanisms are harmful, along with SO much more. We cover the framework for recovering from your life’s various traumas, how to respond to being triggered in the most productive way, and other helpful techniques on the topic of healing. And now, please help me welcome back the one-and-only, Gabby Bernstein, to The School of Greatness!

Overcoming childhood trauma should be the priority for many adults before getting into a relationship and becoming parents. The cycle should be healed and stopped.

Unfortunately we can suppress trauma and not realize it's there.
@Lydia-Roe
@Lydia-Roe Год назад
The thing is, at times, we do not know what that thing, that feeling is, until we get into a deep relationship, and those connections, triggers, etc are manifested. The same goes when we have children. Though I agree, total awareness as a society and culture needs to become a regular & accepted practice, at times, we truly do not know what there is to unearth until our relationships move away the rug and uncover all the "stuff" that is there. I had no idea what a narcissist - covert- with major control issues was until I got married. That's when I realized I had codependency and anxious /avoidant type attachment patterns. But , I wanted to dig deep and do the work prior to having kids. So I did, to my (then) husband's dismay. He could not/would not do his own transformation work. That was really hard. But again, you cannot know all the time what these patterns are. A lot of these are generational, and that requires a lot of looking back at times. Relationships are catalysts to discovering what we to heal and grow from.

You really are an incredible listener,it’s such a profound quality for anyone to have,but modelling it for men to see what that looks like and for women to see that it does exist in men is really changing the face of our generational curses for lack of a better word.thank you for all you do.

To me it would make so much sense that defending that what you says is true and must be believed coming out of child abuse. 🌺 As a kid perhaps you felt scared to say what happened and no one would believe you. it would be very scary to me. Personally I have been noticing how often humans to want to be understood more than being right and that we could so much more easily come to a smoother conversation when each party feels understood. Thank you so much for all your great interviews Louis and your team. This show is part of my weekly habits to maintain growth in my life so thank you 🙏🏼 🌿

Trauma is the inability to be present - OMG 😣 yes when my trauma was re-triggered for the first time, I spent the next 2-3 years completely looping in repeating thoughts and barely present for life. This was sooo frustrating and hard!! Never found a therapist able to understand this 😡

Gabby adds her voice to what others have said over time: Peter Levine, Bessel van der Kolk, AA. Hearing about what she learned is a great thing even if we already knew about these. But the key is *our* experience, *our* journey, *our* body, not someone else. We are all human beings, where "being" is a process of unfolding. Our mind and body needs the unfolding. We can't skip it and it takes time. We each must remind ourself with regular practice and attention to turn intellectual knowledge into automatic subconscious knowledge. Regular daily practices help us. If we tell ourselves we don't have time, then perhaps we haven't suffered enough. Life is the school of greatness...thanks, Lewis. Regular daily meditation practice creates in us the skill to observe or witness, with increasing objectivity and detachment, the content of our body and mind. It gradually reduces judging of other and self. It's shocking to realize that less judging lifts a heavy emotional burden we were carrying all this time. Less judging = less negative feelings in our body. Like self-cleansing. We can only understand this by practice and experiencing for ourself. Journaling after daily meditation chronicles and bring clarity to our impressions across time. Chanting right before a meditation session prepares the mind, even for those who are convinced they can't meditate (i.e., many people). A chant that energizes the body and settles the mind facilitates deeper meditation. Nick Keomahavong has a couple of karaoke style chant videos as examples. Listening to a chant is the first step. Reciting with others is the next step. It's the difference between playing versus listening to a musical instrument. Different neural pathways are activated. Bessel van der Kolk (The Body Keeps the Score) talks about his observations of chanting in unison with others alleviating sorrow and anxiety. Abstaining from: killing, lying, taking what isn't offerred, using mind-altering substances, sexual misconduct... Eliminates our emotional baggage. Regular daily practice elevates our mind set, how we feel about ourselves. We won't always be perfect, but it's a day at a time, without judgment, guilt or shame. Journaling at the end of the day brings focus to our internal evolution. It reminds us of our ability to create inner strength and self-confidence and what we are able and willing to do for ourselves. It creates gratitude. Gratitude is one of the most important regular daily practices. We can easily be grateful for 25 things in a day. We can practice gratitude while we drive to work. Examples: having shelter, food, health, family, friends, happiness, learning a valuable lesson, challenges that foster growth in ourselves and others, a park to go to, life purpose, insurance, good food and water, a clean bathroom, time to spend how we wish, personal freedom, coworkers, good transportation, healthcare, ability to help others. The greatest gratitude may be in reflection on how we helped someone else...altruism. Then there's gratitude for humility.

This whole thing is gold. I'm only 48 minutes in - and I'm listening in like ten minute intervals trying to internalize everything, and then I'm listening to each interval at least one more time before going forward. I've come soooo far, but know I can be so much happier, and more importantly at peace. This gives me hope that one day I can be at peace. I didn't tear up at all yet while listening to this, but now I am. Thank you!!!!

This is huge. I was abused as a child by a male teenage cousin, and the reality of it didn't hit until I was in my late 20s. I really just suppressed and denied it all until that point, until I saw him in person at a family event and it all hit me like a train. I'm 37 now and just started dating someone. Like you, I've done SO much work. I really thought I was good, that I was healed, that I'd reached a place of acceptance. And yet I've found myself triggered. I totally wasn't expecting it, and it led me to your channel. I just wanted to say thank you SO much for sharing your story, and being open, and for posting this video in particular. People who don't have the experiences keep telling me to get over it, or how "good" my parents were...They never knew, and will never accept that I've been abused from the time I was 2 onward. IMO our main personal challenges are: 1. Negative emotions. 2. Meanings: - Core limiting beliefs and the rules we adopted from upbringing 3. What we focus our attention on. 4. Conflicting inner parts: Always guarded, protective, distrusting and cautious yet 'self-sabotaging'

It has helped me discover so much about my own trauma and provided tools for me to work on when seeing my therapist is not an option. Intimate relationships have always been a struggle of mine. Can you do the inner work when your partner is the main cause of your triggers? Can you create a safe space when the other partner isn’t able to recognize their own protectors? Or is it that you need to do the inner work first before you are able to heal within a partnership? I know this question has so many variables and I appreciate any insight you are able and willing to provide. Thank you ❤ 1:14:53

I'm 45 years old and have recently figured out that I have trauma from childhood that has carried over to adulthood. I have tried to commit suicide 3 times in in past year because my self worth was non existent. I felt worthless.... I'm learning how to love myself no matter what happened in my youth and my adullt life.

53:30 yep totally agree... one day in my book it will have full chapter of my universal jokes, After sleeping mindlessly with more than a hundred woman I said if next one won't be the one ( I wasn't ready anyway) I'll probably become gay this break up was major and made me pill onion to 0 reconsidering my upbringing in homophobic environment, being proud of shaming others sexuality etc, so yeah it's still adventure but me and universe befriending again and reversing my given word on much more healthier terms :) I appreciate you both! great conversation so many takeaways . "I'm not here to teach you the meaning of love, I'm here to teach you how to release the blocks to the presence of love" I'm happy to love my life and keep walking this discovery path

At the 18:07 mark I can totally relate to this trigger. For me it seems like an attack on my character. I get it. I’m working on this very thing.

It's always been the same, mental health isn't even covered by ins. except psychiatrists because they give you meds.
