Here's my tip: if you walk into a restaurant and all you smell is disinfectant, not good food, leave immediately.

Rule number 1: is the menu huge? Restaurants that have ridiculously big menus often cannot make their dishes to order so you end up with frozen food being reheated. A real restaurant has a menu that is about 10 to 20 items or less.

unless the kitchen staff is also responsible for taking care of the bathrooms then the bathroom to kitchen cleanliness ratio on the list doesn't add up. ive run restaurants and bars for a long time and usually the bus boys are responsible for the bathrooms during business hours and the janitor cleans them at night. i have never seen a chef that is responsible for the kitchen and the bathrooms and if you're at a restaurant where that is the case you should probably get the hell out of there as quickly as possible.

We went to a Golden Corral once where when we asked the waitress for some dinner rolls. She went to another table where the guests had finished their meal and brought us their left over dinner rolls!😱 Needless to say we informed the manager, who brought us some fresh rolls, but it was the last time we'll ever eat there.

The first one shouldn't be on this list If I'm dealing with a table and so are the other waiters there's no chance of someone wasting time to say "hi" and have a chat when orders need to be put through or tables need to cleared. You can say hi when when you take the order. If anything its a good sign if your waiting and you should think its a good place because its so busy. One tip is be careful of the specials board because its normally full of food that we need to get rid of or we make the most money of. I always look at the staff hygiene.

Hooters, Destin, Fla. 25 years ago, my wife was pregnant, we weren't ordering alcohol, our waitress took our order then spent the next half hour sitting on the laps and showing her thong to the men at tables who were drinking. Finally another server brought us our order and apologized, too bad the food was garbage. we vowed to never go to another Hooters. 15 years later, Biloxi, Miss. I have always held that the condition of the restroom reflects the condition of the kitchen. This is a serious sign of how the establishment you are in is being managed. I only wish that the local health departments would be more diligent in following up on restaurants more frequently.

Looking back on it now, that should have been a major red flag for us to leave. I had a bad restaurant experience before. It was at a Red Lobster in Time Square (that is now shut down), and the wait time was atrocious. What about the food? It was subpar and not worth leaving a tip for the wait staff. I and several others in my group waited for over 3 hrs just to have dinner there only to be disappointed.

This is totally true. I went to Bahama Breeze with my hubby for our 11th anniversary. We had to sit at the bar until a table was ready. We were ignored for 20 minutes by the bartender.....It got worse from there. It took almost 40 minutes before we saw our waiter, when he finally did take our order, it took almost 2 hours to get appetizers out. I was beyond annoyed. We got there at 4 we didn't leave until 7:30‼️ we wanted dinner, but there was no way I was waiting an hour for that to come out. By the time the appetizers came out I didn't even want to stay and eat. I was ready to go. As soon as the appetizers came out I told him to get me 2 2 go plates and check please. We would've been gone, except we couldn't find anybody to bring us the check. I even asked another waitress. She told me I had to wait for my server. To top all this off, we were sat at a table that was dirty, they had a fan outside that was blowing water on us. Absolutely the worse dining experience and I've had some doozies.

My local coffee cafeteria (coffee shop) serves the best breakfast (full English of course) and the staff are fantastic. As a disabled person I appreciate it when they make the time to bring you your coffee to the table for you,even though it is not a waitress served establishment,all in all a really great little place,and the coffee is only £1 a mug. For those of you in the 🇬🇧 you would see it on the E4 channel estings described as various things like “cafe jellybotty” or “cafe spoon greasy” but I assure you that even the best 5star restaurants can’t beat it for service or value for money.

The worst dinning experience I've had is at Outback Steakhouse. Ever since they started using the table top computers, customer service has gone out the back door. Love the food but until they learn that those stupid boxes have ruined the dinning experience, I won't eat there

You walk in during a slow time and most of the staff is playing with their germ ridden phone. Means they aren't doing the little side jobs like cleaning the S&P shakers and menus that need attention.

We went to a restaurant at the House of Mouse in Florida one time (Italian food) and the server was HORRIBLE! We spent TWO HOURS in that restaurant, watching her go from table to table flirting with other women's husbands, even sitting at one of their tables right beside him. And this wasn't a young girl either; she looked more like Flo from Mel's Diner! She took TWO SMOKE BREAKS while we were in the restaurant, and another server had to get us our one refill (we didn't drink alcohol, so I'm guessing that's why we were constantly ignored; no up-sells.) When another server finally got our food for us, it was stone cold from sitting in the kitchen for a while. She did bring the bill though; she was even kind enough to put her tip on the bill for us! We asked for a manager and had it removed with the full story of how she had treated not only us but all the customers at the restaurant, all while she stood there turning five shades of angry red. We didn't get any discounts or anything because, hey, the mouse gets his. But we'll never go back to that restaurant. It's kind of a shame too, because it's really a beautiful restaurant. I just wish I could have told ol' Flo to "kiss my grits."

I've gone into Verts Kebap on 3 occasions. Not a single time was I greeted other than to be asked, "what would you like?" Never once a "hello", or a "how can I help you?", and usually the "what would you like".... comes long (20-30 seconds) after the person before me has been served. ... so no, Verts... no. I will NEVER give them another $.

Going to restaurants should be, attitude wise, like doing a business deal: You should be prepared to walk away. You walk in and things start to look or go wrong, walk away. You can't win with restaurant staff. They control your food out of your sight. Watch _Waiting_ for background. Just walk.

my family and i went to a dennys 2 days ago. we were seated right away bc there wasnt alot of people in the rwstaurant so we started ok. server took like 5 mimutes to come to our table she took our drink order and then took 10 minutes to comw back i order a chocolaye milk in a frosty cup for my daughter and she didnt brought it. then took our food order and food took wayyyyy too long she never checked to see if we needed more drinks which we did. i order a skillet that had muchrooms potatoes spinach grape tomatoes and salmon.. well EVERYTHING was over cook specially the salmon it was just sooooo dry it was horrible. then mh daughter order a kids milk shake but we never got it. and then to make matters worse our server was rushed to the bospital in an ambulance bc she over dosed om some shit in the bathroom our experience there was sooo awfull but we never got to see the manager we asked for a togo box and never got it. it was just bad.

I go to this Chinese restraint 10am in on saturdays and the first 15 min it’s packed so u gotta come early or wait 15min-2 hours but sometimes they forget your water but the whole place is packed and carries like 500 people so I guess it’s business

once we were in a resturant and my mom went to the bathroom and one of the toilets had overflowed with poop and the other was completely disgusting aswell. there was poop all over the floor and she just got the hell out of there

The bathroom thing is dumb. The kitchen isn't responsible for front of house. It might be a sign of bad management but kitchens and front are always run seperately. Check the plating if you want to know how the kitchen is run. Dirty plates, finger prints or generally sloppy plating is a better sign of a sloppy kitchen.

Most bad experiences I've had were from racist servers / hosts. At an Applebees, my husband and I walked in and a black lady was at the host stand. Stood there for about 2 minutes before I walked up to her and said "hello?" She then, without even looking at us just walked away and started cleaning a table - not even bothering to get someone else to tend to us. Another situation was at a KFC. Might as well have had a sign on their door that read "Service for blacks only" cause that's what it felt like. Standing and waiting for like 10 minutes and not a single person greeted us. Then a black customer walked in and was Immediately greeted "Hello sir, what can I do for you this evening?" We just left and ate elsewhere.

I'll add to that. There was a family style restaurant in our home town, the food was great, the service was great and it was fairly clean. A Greek family owned the place but had to let all the Greek workers go in leu of hiring kitchen and wait staff that would work for less. The quality of the food slipped a little and the place started to look run down but the food was still better than most of the restaurants in town. One morning we went in for one of their incredible breakfasts. In the center of the restaurant is the station where the bus boys filled baskets with rolls and rolled the silverware up in the napkins to place on the tables. One of the bus boys began to pick his nose. Wait, it gets better. He then could be seen by our half of the restaurant wiping what he picked out of his nose on his pants. I wish I could say that the guy immediately went to the restroom and washed his hands but he didn't. He continue to put dinner rolls into basket with HIS BARE, ANWASHED HANDS! I cringe when I think of all the meals I ate at this restaurant. We complained to the hostess and told us to wait and tell the owner but we were in a hurry to leave and told her to tell the owner. I hope she did.

On Mothers day my family went out to eat, and they had bugs in the food.

Ok so there was this one time we went to a restaurant and were seated right away but weren't greeted at the table. My mom then asked a waitress and it turned out they didnt even know we weren't helped yet/ even there. Our waitress then came over and apologized. She was extremely nice. The food there was amazing (as it always is there) and we even had a delicious dessert. So, if you aren't attended to in a timely manner, just ask, because they are people too! :)

I had the worst at a so-called family restaurant at Applebee's. Nobody opened the door so my Mother could get in and they refused to waited on her because she was in a wheelchair! The headquarters all they could was"I''m sorry. What do you want us to do about it?"

Went to a local fondue restaurant once (since we never tried it before) and everything (table, cutlery, plates, 'vinyl' seats, even the candles) had a sticky coating of something, like old rancid oil that caked on and was never cleaned. The lighting was low, and everything looked grungy. We actually ordered (we should have walked right out!) and the food was old and dry, and they only brought out small pieces of old, dry, broccoli, tiny cubes of cheese, and other veggies that looked like they were forgotten at the back of the fridge! Really horrible experience. And they charged a lot for this "experience" as well. Seriously, we probably should have called the health dept. on them! Not kidding, worst experience at a restaurant ever.

In my hometown, the number one sign that you're in a bad restaurant is if you're still in town. We have no good food.

There was also another restaurant that we ate at a few times. They had a great buffet. However, I found out that they've been closed down a couple years ago because inspectors found frozen cat (s?) in their freezer. OMG. I'm hoping that was some kind of delicacy to the owners and hopefully it wasn't served to the general public! Makes me sick even thinking about it.

One other sign of a bad restaurant is if the soda is from a can. Because it's often charging you per can and the food tends to be bad.

The cleanliness problems, along with rude waiters, bad food, dirty rest rooms, etc. are ALL due to bad management & owner apathy.

.... Sooo if the cleaners or FOH management don't keep up on the bathroom..... then the kitchen is dirty...... that makes 0 sense. My kitchen is clean. And so aren't the bathrooms. But if for some reason the bathrooms being cleaned.. my kitchen doesn't . Magically get dirty.

When we were in Orlando on vacation a couple years ago, we went to an IHOP for a late dinner, since we didn't leave Universal studios until it closed and it has PERMANENTLY ruined IHOP for me. First of all, it was very packed and loud and once we got to our table, the waitress told us that there was only 2 cooks working that night. Second of all, it was 12-1 p.m when we got seated and my little brother and I fell asleep and the food took forever to get there. Third of all, when the food arrived, it was cold and it was terrible. Moral of the story, don't eat at an IHOP in Florida.

One time many years ago my parents and I went to our local Pizza Hut. We got seated, and then we waited and waited and waited. Didn't even get menus. Meanwhile, a nearby table of about 12-15 people got seated, served, ate, and left while we were still waiting. We weren't the only table that happened to.

i mean iv gone to restaurants where you seat yourself, and go up to a counter to give your order, foods still good, and wouldnt waiting to be served because everyone's busy be better than walking in and the restaurant is empty and your easily seated

Other than the fact that more customers than staff visit the bathrooms and a lot of customers for some reason like to deface restrooms. Im gonna wager the kitchen is NOT in the same condition as a restroom, might want to rethink that one...

Getting ignored is definitely a bad sign that the waiters have not been properly educated in customer service. Doesn't mean the rest of the place sucks though. In the case of my workplace, it's impossible not to notice new guests, as the bar, and counter of our waiters, points directly to the entrance. Yep, if your dishes are dirty when you get your food, send it back, it means the dishwasher didn't do their job properly, and the chefs didn't pay attention either while plating. Silverware has to be cleaned about 2-3 times in the machine (depending on how much there is) before it's properly cleaned. Drinking glass needs a separate machine alltogether. (so it doesn't get that gray-ish tint) The menu being dirty is no indication as to how kitchen staff cleans the kitchen. The bathrooms being gross has nothing to do with the kitchen. Kitchen staff should NEVER be responsible for cleaning the toilet. That would be... Unhygienic. But yes, it does ruin your overall experience. Peoples emotions can't be trusted, they may be in a very bad mood or not, that doesn't have to depend on the food alone. Of course, bad food will tend to make people angrier, while good food will have the opposite effect. Yup, if staff isn't happy about their jobs, or making mistake after mistake, somethings wrong. But that doesn't always have to be on the management level, there could be a rookie in the establishment for example, or something unexpected happens. That one is absolutely true. The main reason people come into a restaurent, is the food, everything else can be terrible, but if the food is too, well, then it's not worth it. Kind of obvious, no?

I went to Americain owned Mexican restaurant I ordered a taco and I saw other people getting their orders that came after me and my family then my dad got mad and tolded them to cancel the order and keep the money and we left and we haven't gone ever since

If I'm ignored on entry or if I have any other unpleasant or rude experience before I order I'm out straight away... Also keep them in check between courses... If food isn't cooked as per order send it back and ask for a free desert as compensation... I'm prepared to walk out if your service is shit... I do my job properly so you should also

Hubby and I went to Applebee's , it was the waitress first day. I completely understand she was nervous, frazzled...but She messed up every single order. She didn't get not one thing right. I knew that was going to happen because she didn't write anything down. I asked for a dirty martini with olives, she brings me an appletini.. Like what the fuck? My appetizer was suppose to come with bbq sauce, it looked like a little bit of bbq sauce was just thrown on some unappetizing pieces of meat.. I bit my tongue when she messed up my drink. I can just go to the bar and get my dirty martini.... But the appetizers had me make a stank face. I guess the manager on duty saw my face and the fact I hadn't touched the appletini. I told him that's not the drink I ordered, the food looked like someone took bites before sending it out. He looked at the appetizers and saw why I made a stank face. He was very nice, he replaced my drink and appetizer. He also explained it was her first day. I figured that out when she brought me an appletini. She had an excuse it was her first day.. I hope she's better at her job now. I don't think any of her tables was happy that night. She even brought the wrong dinner to our table. She was pretty bad😂😂

Id like to say as a chef the cleanliness of the bathrooms and dining room is no indication of the cleanliness of tge kitchen. The chefs and back of house staff clean the kitchen. The front of house staff cleans the front of the house. Two groups of ppl clean two different ways it could be clean front and dirty kitchen or clean kitchen and dirty dining room
