John Hurt or Kanes chest burst scene has never been topped. He made the process look and feel truly terrifying. It had such an effect on me as a 12year old I didn't eat eggs for month's...lol
@@moaningpheromones It doesn't matter how they phrase or word it. If you know what they meant, then that's enough. I suppose I could say anything to you that you might disagree with, but where as long as I write or word something in a way that you think is incorrect, you'll just focus on that, and ignore what I said.
absolutly agree, The Story Teller was an amazing show i pretty much watched in loop as a kid, 1984 was also amazing, Snowpiercer, alien of course, ... he always managed to be memorable without ever really needing to steal the show.
For all of us who first saw Alien in the theatre it's kind of amazing to think back to a time when you would walk into a movie not really knowing much about it (as opposed to today) and to experience something like the chest-busting scene for the very first time. Having not had anything spoiled with multiple trailers and extra "the making of..." content and word-of-mouth on social media, and pre-launch cast interviews etc. etc. etc. Just to experience it raw. It's an amazing and profound entertainment experience. it will never be like that again.
The Simpson scene where Homer comes out of the Cinema spoiling the Dark Vader/Luke Skywalker connection makes so MUCH sense in a pre-social media world.
I've heard that the Actress who played Lambert had a bit of a Panic attack after that and had to be calmed down, which is a heck a lot understanding! Amazing though!
@@alexjamess she's second, but Ripley is just untouchable. Sarah Connor was protecting her son, Ripley rushed an aliens nest solo during a nuclear meltdown countdown to save a little girl that wasn't even her daughter and was already most likely dead. And then she proceed to kick the ass of their queen with a glorified forklift, uttering one of the most iconic one liner of all action and Sci fi cinema.

@@slckb0y65I don’t miss the 80’s at all myself, but Alien and Blade Runner was and are something else. All the actors became special through those movies 👍
I'm glad the actors on the set had that reaction. I went to see it on opening weekend with my brother only knowing it was a sci-fi/alien encounter film. We had to sit kind of close to the screen in the theater. When John Hurt started convulsing and that thing popped out of his chest I just about had my heart jump out of my chest! Awesome movie, I just rewatched it about two months ago. The sequel ('Aliens') is pretty awesome, too.
I was at a screening for an audience of educators, at the ABA in Los Angeles that year. I had seen the film already, so wandered out into the hall of the big downtown hotel where the ABA was being held. The hall was deserted save for an odd-looking gentleman dressed all in black. It was H.R. Giger. He spoke no English, but I had a little German, so we chatted. Mostly about a mutual love for the work of H.P. Lovecraft. No cell phones then, so no selfies (alas).
I've always liked Sigourney Weaver and my favourite performance of hers is an unusual choice. "No Background Music" was a BBC radio play in which she played a US Army nurse, traumatised by her service in Vietnam and trying to rebuild her life. It was an extraordinary performance that stayed in my mind for dats after hearing it.
This clip confirms a rumour I'd heard at the time the movie was released - that the ONLY people who knew exactly what was about to happen in the 'chest buster' scene, were... the director and John Hurt. Apparently - they wanted the cast reactions to be as genuine as possible - rather than scripted.
I love listening to stories about Alien, be it pre-production, production, post, from actors or directors...I just love the world of Alien and all the sequels. Sci-Fi and horror, the perfect combination.
Fantastic account! Makes film all the more interesting after all these years. That an actor can both not be acting and afraid another in real peril is nice bit of humility from a most vain egotistical art. As science student I was always disappointed at the lack of logic like creature grows from cobra sized to lion. But back then this and Jaws used absence of the creature to such suspenseful effect.
John Hurt absolutely sold it. You absolutely believe that this is a horrible, agonising way to die, which is what it would be. The woman in Aliens was not bad, although I get it that for pacing reasons it's sped up. But everyone since then acts like they have indigestion. Could be a chestbuster or a curry hard to tell.
One thing that doesn't get mentioned but what really helped sell the scene. There's an audible, deep crack, like bone breaking, as the chest burster first punches out while still under John Hurt's shirt.
Casting this woman was like winning the lottery. Weaver is the only actress that as Ripley, you absolutely believe that can not only survive but beat that prehistoric monster from outer space. Born to play that role.
I love to meet Sigourney Weaver. I admit in every horror movie the hero is usually a man. It was shocking when it was revealed that Weaver was destined to be the hero. But yes, Kane's death scene as the Alien bursted out of his chest is what triggered the horror. I remember when some students at a high school in New Jersey did a play to pay tribute to the 40th anniversary of Alien's debut in 1979, and Sigourney Weaver was there to see it and was very impressed. The Alien franchise is among my favorite Sci-fi horror movies of all time. "In space, no one can hear you scream"👽
@stevielambert8262 Oh. Didn't know that. But in my opinion the choice to have a woman hero was perfect and unexpected. Classic horror. I salute all that played a role in Alien.
I've only seen the film once, and a long time ago. Very good apart from John Hurt staring closely at the alien "egg" (Hadn't he watched any sci-fi films?) and the man going off to find the alien. No you don't. The old lady going out into the fog in "The Fog". "Let's all split up and search for the monster." No. No. No. Stay close to each other. If John Wyndam's electrical storm happened (Day of the Triffids) I would be under the duvet.
……when that thing originally clamped onto the astronaut’s face mask, I thought, ‘this isn’t going to end well’, & so it came to pass………absolutely horrifically! R I P John Hurt, a superb actor………
Well Ridley Scott planned it that way and it was a combination of not knowing what was happening and the genius actor that was John Hurt. I can watch that scene over and over and it never gets old. I saw it when it came out when I was eight years old, it was poor judgement of my parents to take me and my brother along. Sounded like a horror house in that theatre when that scene happened. I'm sure Ridley Scott had witnessed the reaction he's been immensely proud of his work.
I watched it when I was around 8 and I am really traumatized with that scene. What’s worst, my mom loves thrill and horror movie so she was loving it while I was having a horrible time. 😂
What if Ridley Scott was in a movie, and then the person directing that decided to mess with him where something happens that he doesn't expect, and then it turns out he's not acting but the footage is kept and used anyway? Do you think Ridley Scott would admit that he deserved it, given what he did to those actors that Sigourney Weaver was talking about?
I’ve heard about that scene, but never watched it having deliberately avoided it. I can imagine look on everyone’s faces was not acting. I’m surprised no one ran screaming in the room.
An absolute masterpiece. Great acting,. Cinematography,. Screenplay &. Superbly directed. ! One of my favourite films! A classic. I would love to see alien on the big screen again one day. 😂😂
No, no, no! Didn't she get the memo? She's supposed to pretend that the cast was completely clueless about what was going to happen! She's supposed to say that they were kept completely in the dark, they had no idea why John Hurt was lying on the table, and no clue that an alien was going to pop out of his chest. Damn it Sigourney, you're spoiling the myth!
I remember seeing Alien in the theater when it came out. About 20 people walked out of the theater, nauseous, at that scene. Incredible movie on so many levels.
