The Sikorsky VS-44 was a large four-engined flying boat built in the USA in the early 1940's. The VS-44 was designed primarily for the trans-Atlantic passenger market, with a capacity of 40+ passengers. Only three aircraft were produced: Excalibur, Excambian, and Exeter.
By 1940, Sikorsky, now merged with Chance Vought under the umbrella of United Aircraft, produced the VS-44. A single deck seaplane with four twin-row Pratt & Whitney Twin Wasps rated at 1,200 hp each, the new aircraft was 80 ft in length and weighed in at 57,500 lb for takeoff. The Boeing 314 Clipper was larger and boasted more powerful Wright Twin Cyclones of 1,600 hp, but the VS-44 was 30 mph faster and could fly an average payload more than 4,000 mi, out distancing the big Boeing by 500 mi and earning bragging rights with the longest full-payload range of any aircraft in the world. The VS-44 brought home several new world records after it went into operation, but the limited production would never even recoup the VS-44s development costs.
American Export Airlines (AEA) ordered three VS-44s, dubbed Flying Aces and named Excalibur (NX41880; later as NC41880), Excambian (no NX; later as NC41881), and Exeter (no NX; later as NC41882) after the parent company's Four Aces. AEA had grown out of the American Export Lines steamship line, so naturally these planes gave nothing away to cruise ships. Sikorskys standard of luxury boasted full-length beds, dressing rooms, full galley, snack bar, lounge and fully controlled ventilation.

My very first airplane ride was on this plane when I was 12 years old, in 1962 or 1963. What a thrill!!

Me. And my brother-in-law hauled thus aircraft from Norfolk VA to Pensacola. FL. IN 1978 . A FEW YEARS later picked it up again from Pensacola , took it to Norfolk, VA. From there another tugboat picked it up an took it to Connecticut. Like 44 years ago and it was the first mission I had after I got my tugboat license. My dad had his tug leased to S. C. Loveland Co. out of Philadelphia.

Nice photos, but the music was great.I used to play in a swing band and Harry's "Trumpet Blues and Cantabile"used to really get the crowd going .There is nothing to compare with a swing band when it lets rip.You just get carried along when you are playing and the band, and music just seems to take on a life of its own.Wonderful and so was Harry James.

My father was an engineer on one of the three planes during the early part of WWII. I flew once on the plane that served tourists from Long Beach to Catalina in 1961. Two of them crashed and the last one is on display at an air museum in Connecticut. My father told me hair raising stories of his North Atlantic crossings.

Same here... father was a flight engineer on this plane. He was also at the CT Excambian museum dedication in 1998. I am just now trying to find out if the surviving spouses of these guys working for AEA, AOA (before the PAA acquisition) during WWII, are eligible for a partial veteran's property tax exemption. They were in the past (in NY). My county is now only mentioning PAA civilian service under the ATC. ... more to research.

The three VS-44As were "The Three Aces" of American Export Airlines. American Export Lines, the shipping branch of the corporation, had "The Four Aces," ships with the same names plus one more.

I flew on that several times in 1960-61 with my Grandmother and Mother to Catalina, Don't remember it... But my Mother has photo's of us on it... My grandparent's owned property in Avalon at 316B Metopole Ave. from 1957 to 1997... Last time a flew a seaplane to Catalina was in 1983, that's the last year of seaplane service to the island...

I flew on a Grumman Goose amphibious seaplane from Long Beach airport to Catalina Island and back in the summer of 1988.

Its wing mounted floats made it a better design than the Boeing 314. Those hull sponsons on the 314 didn't always work, allowing a wing tip to snag in the water. Dangerous.

The one from 1:13 to 1:25 in the video was owned by a man named Blair and ran in the Bahamas , carrying supplies.... He was married to a movie star. It was taken, by barge, to Connecticut in 1980 to be refurbished.... I was one of the tugboat captains that took it from Pensacola Fl to Connecticut....

Flying out & back to Catalina Island on one of those would have been something. Pity it was before I moved to California.

The story of it's salvation may seem convoluted, but it was all planned. When the idea of preserving it in the current museum was floated, Charlie Blair offered to fly it to the airfield and land it in the snow. The idea was rejected..His wife, Maureen O'Hara, became the first CEO of a scheduled airline.

No. Earlier Sikorsky boats did, though.
