Great review, Kim. Just a few things I thought about while reading: the contrast of the religion of Lantern Yard (judgment by lots--I'm amazed that practice lasted so long) vs. the religion of Raveloe. I'm wondering what Eliot wanted us to take from that. Also I found the character of Dolly playing a similar role to Dinah in Adam Bede. Dolly is the "connection" between Silas and the community, as Dinah is the connection for Hettie. I thought the portrayal of Nancy was interesting, too--she could have been completely dismissive of Silas' claims to Eppie, but she wasn't. She supported her husband, but her understanding made me think of a more rounded person than we would have expected. And lastly there's the question as to who has the "right" to be Eppie's father, and it's amazing to see how Eliot makes us grapple with the legal vs. moral right. Which was foreshadowed in the village discussion in the pub about how to define a "legal" marriage--was it the words or the minister or the register? So much is such a little book!

Thanks for the discussion of this poignant book, Kim. How George Eliot gets me to love and identify so completely with her characters will always baffle me. I immediately become a member of the community she depicts - but in Silas Marner, even more than the previous ones. Whether that's because I'm more accustomed to her world or her style, I don't know. Can't wait for the next one!

I feel the same way! Her writing is so immersive. Mill on the Floss in July! 🥰

A superior review! It encourages me to take on George Eliot's more demanding works.
