To all those criticising this video. Maul is showing options. He can only show one how to use technique it's up to you to have the fighting intelligence to apply them at the right times. Clearly none of you have any patience or discipline so you'll never be great fighters. Go play your sports this is warrior art and it takes dedication and initiative to be a warrior

Though I practice Kali, Silat is easy for me to understand due to its many similarities to Kali. I love these videos.
@MrSquirreller
@MrSquirreller 6 лет назад
Kali and Silat are definitely similar and are branches of the same tree but Silat might not necessarily be the mother art. If you've ever heard of the remigration theory - Austronesians originated from Taiwan traveled to Borneo from the Philippines then remigrated back w/ the first major wave from Malaysia then the second from Brunei. Also, Java has never "conquered" the Philippines. The Philippines particularly Sulu, some parts of Visayas and Mindanao was part of the old Majapahit empire but we were never conquered - establishing a colony is worlds apart from sending a military expedition. Both Kali and Silat complement each other well and share similar concepts. I've seen masters from both arts have different insights on the same concepts or have entirely new ideas that are very enlightening. So, it shouldn't be a question of which one is the better art but to learn from what each has to offer.

@ditbabscrib6561

My grandfather taught me silat, he never referred to it as Kali. I'm from the Philippines and my ancestors came from Cebu and Mindanao. The art has been passed down from father to son or nephew, grandfather to grandson (basically all the males in the family) as tradition. And yes Kali and Silat are very similar specially in strikes, finishing and most specially the footwork and it's because Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei have similar ancestors making us distant relatives

"I did a simular course of eskrima years back." You realize you're comparing two entirely different systems right? And you're making judgements based off of one video. If you've truly trained martial arts like you say you have (for an extended period of time), then you would know that to truly understand you have to feel. You can't make judgements and accusations about martial arts unless you actually have that physical interaction. If you do experience it (always get it on video) and if it's a shit system, you can talk all the smack you want. Although, the honorable thing to do would be to bow out and allow the instructor to retain some of his dignity. Until then, it's all just talk, talk, talk.

This guy really knows his stuff. But I admit its also one of the reasons I avoid seminars. Because the instructor is going so fast, after standing there all day long youll have a nice few techniqes you can either use right away, or practice at home. But it never works that way. You get overloaded and 2 days later...that 24 hr rest in between the seminar and driving/flying home makes you lose it as fast as it went in(for me anyway) You break your butt watching, memorizing angles and 2 days later you cant even remember all the moves from one technique. I think a seminar has to be at least 5 days, and 50% of it has to be repeating whats in the 1st 1/2 of the first day to really get something out of it. Anyone agree? I am a student of Anthony Robbins and Cloe Madanes and we are learning the best ways to learn. That aside, Id like to study with this guy. He' s good and personable too.

You're right. Something that helps is when you attend seminars alongside your regular teacher, then he incorporates what was learnt in the seminar into the next few weeks of training so that it isn't wasted.

+Marc Vince Marc, try going to seminars with your instructor(s) who are familiar with some of the material. You can focus on watching or taking notes, while you can also depend on your instructors(s) to fill in what is missing. This is what I do when I go to see Guro Dan Inosanto.
@Just-inThought

+sienna three Not so much. You are there to absorb whatever it is you absorb. This could be anything that you have mentioned, including specific techniques.
@cataclismicberry1
@cataclismicberry1 8 лет назад
+Marc Vince Something that helps me to remember material covered in seminars is writing down notes when the group takes a breather. I bring a notebook to every seminar I attend. It has enabled me to remember 90-95% of everything I've ever been exposed to at those events. I have been training in SE Asian MAs for going on 5 years now and I have almost 6 entire notebooks full of notes from seminars and classes. I wouldn't be able to teach without them! :-)
@Reason1717

Marc Vince, I think your point is valid. But I would add, sometimes it's not the technique you walk away with, it's the concept. Like the concept of limb destruction.

Hey, if you are in Malaysia, I suggest Silat Gayong Malaysia or Pusaka Gayong. It might be overrated in this country but I tell you if you find a good teacher for this silat, then it is very good. I learn this Silat Gayong at my university and it is awesome. They teach you about Silat, Pencak (Pentas, for entertainment) and Seni which is the same when you learn Silat techniques, but more painful and easy to do the techniques.

people who complain that it's complicated or it doesn't work in real life doesn't know the philosophy of silat or the origin. Everything, in life is complicated. but, we learn or we practice. Sometime, you got the opportunity to use it and sometime it doesn't. If you can run from a knife fight, of course do that. but, when you're back to a wall, what will you do to your attacker? the only way is through them. You can see the flow of the move from one to another. SOmetime, expecting the actions like a chess match. If you can control the situation to your advantage, you already know the outcome. Which is whatever depends on the situation. If you want a simple tip, just kick the guy balls like maul always shows you. Which by the way are not allowed in competition fighting. lol :p

Excellent reactions with lightning responses! What I like most is the two handed approach of handling any attack supported by angled asteps and flavourd with leg sweeps. But, what if I am not that fast as my master? Beginners, less experienced and elderly people in particular can hardly face attact so briskly. I heard, there is Silat for all generations, both men a nd women. Please think of them, too. Best regards. Paul,67, retired instructor of Karate.

You don't achieve mastery overnight but ur lifetime. Silat and any martial art for that matter are taught from a tender age. Silat has a very long learning curve. I heard to learn one form or steps of SIlat can take up months. If you're just starting martial arts in your senior days then of course you can never be good. Besides anyone who tries to hurt an elder is a coward. They should pick someone of their own size.

Brilliant.. Live the principle of making the person attacking you occupy their hand by reacting to pain.. But what I wonder is will that always be viable? For instance if the person is a conditioned fighter like say a boxer or Muay Thai guy.. They may not react to the pain the way a regular guy would no? Perhaps the strikes have to be "internal"
@MarcV8888
@MarcV8888 9 лет назад
Half, I suspect the answer to your question is not cut and dried. For instanxce, can you picture these techniques working on a boxer like Joe Frazier whose left hook could go thru anything? Could it stand up to a very tall man with extra large arms like muhammad Ali who could keep flicking a jab into your face and whether it connects or not you are still far away from him. Or , and this is unfair as there is only one of him, but would this work on mike tyson when he was in his prime and if the instructor stopped the first punch ,mike would still be stepping in before acounter could be thrown? I dont have an answer to these questions. The problem with most silat styles is that you cant find the answer very quickly as they are complicated and not qick or easy to learn. But now, if I had to fight a guy with a knife or a weapon, which would I choose, a boxer or a silat guy? Ahhhhhh....now thats a whole different ballgame. I do love Silat though. If I wasnt over 50 I would be taking it now. Its very hard on your legs because of their many low stances. Its definitely a "jungle art."

I experienced a seminar made by maul.....is an incredible master.....his style is very interior and effective....but of course one has to select what has to be discarded and what has to be taken....of course is a traditional style....this is not a fight sistem for sport competition...but it's selfe defence....is not developed to fight on a cage or tatami.

After watching this, just youtube any Silat tournament, fight, sparring, silat vs xyz art, then tell me if a majority of this stuff can translate into the real world. Over complicating a fight actually dilutes your performance.

Simon2k17 because breaking joints and skull are forbidden. Tournament of silat is simplified version of real silat combat system. Can you name any martial tournament that allows fighter to kick the ball? Even mma forbid hitting back of the head

rahman massewwa except this video has alot of headshots, body shots and leg sweeps and chokes. Which is allowed in most tournaments. Do me a favor and watch the video by only paying attention to the student feeding the punch. Be honest with yourself. Do you punch as slow as this student and do you leave your arm out there and not pull it back after a punch? If the answer is no, then alot of these fancy silat movesets will not work on you. In real time these movesets will not work against a resisting uncorporative opponent.

@@simonmafy Totally agree.this fancy movements looks nice but doesn't work against a somebody who have any idea about fight. I saw the penkat tournament and is a joke

silat tournament using "silat olahraga", the silat movement that ask you to try your best to get points by hitting the opponent on the body (head/face is forbidden to hit) and take your opponent down. there are many silat movement that are forbidden to use during the silat olahraga. this video directly shows how the master performing the movement or we call it as "buah". but there are most basic things before you could learn this, which is how to catch the opponent's punches and kicks. once you able to catch, then you will be able to apply any suitable movement at that moment. in silat that i learn we call it "kaedah asas" or basic method to take the punches and kicks. once you master this, then you are ready to learn the "buah" or the one you call as complex movements. you dont need to memorize all, just memorize the "buah" that easiest and suitable for you to apply, then the fight will become easy on you. and remember, "buah silat" normally use to finish your opponent as soon as possible, so it attacks more on the sensitive parts. because you dont know what you opponent capable of, so better take him/her down on his/her first punch or kick.

Look at the positive side, he was teaching you how to react. It is up to you to apply them base on your situation, knowledge and reaction. If you feel you don't agreed with this technique then just ignore the video. Some people might benefit from it.

Why did u claim this silat as bruneian martial art??i think original is from indonesia
@MustAfaalik
@MustAfaalik 4 года назад
@I believe the ORIGIN is KUNTAU as Guru mentioned in his earlier clips. Kuntau means Chinese kung fu and in this case it is very similar to WC. Others might have different origin from other countries or indigenous.
