I saw one Muay Thai practionner condemmed silat and how proud he is about his Muay Thai. So, I was thinking to give him some good example/historical prove how effective silat is in real life death-life fight @ warfare: 1. Sriwijaya, Majapahit, Malacca, Patani, Perak WON many wars againts Siamese for thousands of years. The latest one was in 1822 Siam vs Perak where by Perak WON the war. The huge Siamese troops+muay thai fighter with the elephant were burned to the ground by Perak/Selangor alliance near the border Kedah/Perak territory. Read Perak Scholar and British manuscripts. 2. 1836 Kedah/Patani independent resistance drawed Siamese up to Songkhla, retook Perlus, Satun,Patani and Trang. However, Siamese won the war because of British support-British attacked Kedah from the sea, blocked the food/weapon supplies and supply weapons + canons etc to Siam troops. Otherwise Kedah pendekar should have knocked your King Rama castle in Bangkok. Read British Navy Captain Sherrard Osborn 1836 diary about Kedah army-dicipline+skillfull in close combat. 2. Majapahit@Javanese repelled Monggolian navy in 13 century. Their nose were cut and send back to Monggol. Monggol send many expedition to destroy Majapahit, all ended failed. Do you think Ayuthia@Siamese dared to fight Monggol? Even Rom empire think twice to fight the Monggol. Fact! 3. Spanish vs Sulu , 300 years war. Spanish never conquered the south part- Mindanao @Sulu. 4. US army vs Sulu Juramantados in 1900. US army never dared to fight toe to toe with Sulu resistance who practiced silat. Read Moro resistance Panglima Hassan uprising+moro resistance how endurance and skillful they were in close combat. Shotted with 32 bullets but almost able to finish his last opponent. Above are the proves of the effectiveness of silat in life-death fight @ warfare. I am not saying silat is the best but I rather say real silat is designed for real fight where no rules applied and it is strictly not appropriate for sport mode like muay thai or box. Have you ever see someone claw their oppenent eyes, throat, testicle, joints in muay thai? In real silat, you will see this kind of thing. My humble opinion or conclusion: 1. There is no better or bad martial art. All of them are good. 2. The victory is for the one who practice hard + intelligence. All the best brothers. Be humble as we can because we are aging. We cant be strong forever. 😉😁

Well, MT came from Muay Boran. And I think maybe MB came from Bokator? MT is just a sport version of an ancient martial art. We’d have to research if the original ancient arts used “illegal” strikes like you mentioned above or not. I’m sure they did tho since it was the main art for war back then. It’s the same argument for kung fu, real kf uses a lot of “dirty illegal” moves that cause real dangerous harm.
@winterhellercru2538
@winterhellercru2538 4 года назад
For sure muay thai/boran or kf has dirty moves also like Silat. Quick moves+dangerous. Not enough time to "play" like MMA. We (Malay) have fought Siamese (now Thailand) for thousands of years and historically have proved how efficient Silat is against Muay Boran/Thai in armed/weaponed combat - read Siam-Perak war 1822, Kedah Independent war 1838 etc. My point above was not to condemn Muay Thai/Boran. I honestly love Muay Thai practice - develop tough body + strong stamina. My main intention here was to give proven example to a "boy" who looked down on Silat and talk highly on his Muay Thai. As I said all martial arts are deadly. How effective? Depend on the user+intelligence.

Acan - above are the proven examples of effectiveness of Silat. Talking about history, actually there is more info and dramatic story about this. You can read these books or articles: 1. Kedah Blockage 1836- Captain Sherard Osborn diary. He spoke about the war and also highly about Kedah fighter (endurance, brave, skillful, strategic etc). 2. Perak vs Siam 1822- after Siam captured and raped Kedah in Perang Bisik 1821, they moved down south to take down Perak. Perak + Bugis brave fighter from Selangor assembled and crushed the huge equipped Siamese troops+elephants. Siamese troops was heavily defeated.and burned to the ground. Siamese tried to attack again, but Perak Sulatane played a diplomatic strategy, forced British to turn up against his own allies, the Siamese. This put British in dilemma position, secure Perak or British gonna lost his business (mining). As a result, Burney Agreement 1826 was signed between British-Siam. 3. Moro resistance 1904 - read the endurance of Sulu Juramentados which has forced US army to change their bullet caliber size. Panglima Hasan was shot with 32 bullets but still can finish his last opponent before felt down. Read all these stories. Our history is not only about Malaya vs Malayan Union-British. Its more than that. Its about blood and tears.

This principle has been exploited in movies like Karate Kid where the master demonstrates how painting and mopping has hidden use in martial art applications.

Most people think one guy winning in duel is the evidence of good of bad martial arts, this idea comes from movies that promote certain martial arts in the 60s-70s (even today) such as Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee movies, a guy winning using his martial prove his martial art is the best of the best...people forgot that all those movies are for entertainment...if it is Kung Fu movie, then Kung Fu win against everything, if it is Karate movie then Karate beat everything and so on...

I think this is pretty universal to all martial arts. You never want to stop your punch or kick on the skin of your opponent. You always have to punch or kick as if you want to go through your opponent. Ofcourse keep in mind that to go through, you have to be a bit closer, so you have to watch your defense as well.

Is your system of Silat unique to the idigineous origins of Borneo or perhaps to solely Brunei itself (like spoken languages having dialects and accents)? The combat effectiveness is clearly seen beyond the other versions of Silat I've seen. All the Combat Arts in that region of the world are impressive in their own right but I have a lot of respect for your personal practice of your art. With respect, from the heart, thanks for sharing your passion.

@hunterboss2628
@hunterboss2628 5 лет назад
Kelek or gelek is the 1st thing i learn in Lian (Gayang 5 / guru pak atan air batu/ guru kumusa school).. its no secret at all.. even the sweeping walk also is not a secret in Lian.. We learn this since day one.. Guru Maul's Silat is Kuntau base.. Kuntau n Lian are different styles but the basic ones like these are the same.. Guru Maul also like to explain everything in detail..one bit at a time... his students are very very lucky... Bruneians pesilat also very2 lucky because they learn the art the traditional way that is starting with the weapon first before empty hands.. Unlike in malaysia.. We have to practise it in reverse.. empty hands first.. because of during the british period we cannot practise silat openly what more with weapon.. silat was thought indoor..in a wooden house...on a wooden floor..Imagine.. so we got to skip the weapon... Until today the teaching cont the same way.. Time after time we lost so many knowledge.. In many cases the techniques are there in the jurus or war dance (bunga) but very little pesilat aware abt it...wht certain moves are for..most didnt know.. Guru maul show the basic moves of Tembung..thts the genuine technique... Ive saw some silat styles here even got the Tembung technique wrong...xcant blame them..the knowledge tht been passed down is very little or lost or hidden the moment silat was thought empty hand first..

Actually, many silat styles incorporate this into their syllabi. For reference, I live in Malaysia. Me and my kids learned the shifting of the feet done simultaneously with punching literally on our respective first days of silat. Although our first days of silat were separated by more than 25 years, the moves were exactly the same, and it's been like this for hundreds of years. Also, I have had the privilege of learning another type of Silat from Borneo when I was younger. Borneo is the island on which the Malaysian states of Sabah and Sarawak are located, along with Brunei and part of Indonesia. I could see a number of similarities between the style that I learned and Maul's SSBD, and both have similarities with the silat styles of Peninsula Malaysia. So it's definitely not unique to Guru Maul's style, but rather something that's common in the silat world. Here's something to consider. I have been watching silat moves on RU-vid for many, many years now, and I must say that most of the videos are actually showing quite basic movements. On top of that, most of these demonstrations do not cover the details of the technique. It is these minute details that make silat, silat. Otherwise, a kick is a kick, a punch is a punch. Guru Maul seems different because he explains these details. Other silat teachers know what he knows too, it's just that Guru Maul is a lot more articulate. That doesn't mean Guru Maul is not good - he really is good, and I would love to have him teach my kids silat - but, to reiterate, this type of knowledge is common in silat. I imagine this would lead us to the next natural questions: why isn't this being taught far and wide? why aren't they being used in MMA or UFC? etc Well, I won't claim I know the answer to those, but for Malays - and silat is the art of the Malays - getting beaten up is a fairly dumb proposition. Getting whacked during silat training is one thing, but getting whacked in return for payment is... not a popular thing to do. Silat is something to help ensure us that we get home to our families, not to show strength with.

Because silat developed by malay people in Nusantara (south Thailand , Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei and maybe Philipina) with the typical small body who have to learn efectivity to find the weak parts of human body.
