Finally, a years old obsession is being addressed. I am old enough to remember the song Silence is Golden by The Tremoloes. I love songs that use the electric guitar with the effect, not only this one, but also In my Room by The Beach Boys. Thanks for posting this!
In our youth we thought these songs are too hard stuff to play them ourselves. If we had been able to imagine it we would have wished some kind of early YT with Ivor as teacher. once more merci beaucoup.
Ivor, you’ve been a great help to me in the past, and for this song your simple intro is fabulous. You mention the need to be quick going from intro to 1st E chord, and this made me think a lot about Status Quo. (Stay with me on this!). I’ve been playing one of their songs where Rick (God rest him) plays Gm at 3rd fret, and Francis plays the whole song with capo on 5. So extending this to Silence, play with capo on 4. The fingering then becomes (in shapes) C F G7 Em Dm etc. It’s also very easy to bring in the intro on 1st and 2nd strings, and move from your 3 string intro tho the first E (i.e. C at the capo). I feel chuffed at working this out as a result of your tuition and my interest in Francis Rossi. Many thanks.. Phil
Glad to hear that you are finding my lessons helpful. Well done in arranging the song to be played using a capo on the 4th fret using open chords (C,F G etc). In general if you have two guitars playing the same chords it always a good idea to try doing what you have done with one of them. You end up with a fuller sound. Ivor
I think you are correct about the key change. It catches the ear and keeps it out of a rut. I’ve heard that is the reason. Thanks Ivor for an oldie but goodie!
Hi Mr Ivor, this "Silence is Golden" do bring back memories. I listened to quite a number of their songs. And I love this "By the Way" by the Tremeloes; maybe, sometime, you could do this lesson?
