Silencing Myths: Video Game Misconceptions 

SIXXERDUDE "younger generation" has been buying guns and suppressors for a while now. GWOT era!!! those kids who served in 2001 are now over 30. It's the Over 30 gun owners that are disappearing. Food for thought. Video games are now ubiquitous ages 5 to 50.

I'm in my early 20s and i play a lot of first person shooter games, so thats what i mean by younger.

Many of the kids I know are into it, but the 2015 ammo crisis made it impossible for many of the people I know to shoot and they switched to other hobbies.

That could apply for 22lr, pistol rounds, and 300blk, but those rounds are generally for close proximity use anyway, so subsonic ammo isn't really making you give up much. However, you're not going to be able to use subsonic with most rifle rounds which are definitely neutered in video games when a silencer is attached.

biggwigg338 spot on. If you don't want a report from the bullets supersonic shock wave you need ammunition that will be subsonic for your application or like the MP5-SD have the ability to slow regular velocity ammunition to subsonic levels.

Jace LeRoy well, subsonic ammunition has to go under 1100 ft/s. Most rifle bullets go inbetween 2500 and 3000 ft/s. So yes, there is going to be a difference in damage and range. The bullet will have to be heavier and moving slower, causing greater affects by gravity.

being heavier doesn't affect how much drop there is. Two objects with a different weight will still fall at the same speed, given one doesn't have significantly more wind resistance eg. feathers because of their large surface area vs weight.

Those involved in the gun industry like yourself pick understand things like subsonic ammo, however many gamers have a false perception when it comes to how suppressors affect a gun's accuracy, power, and noise levels.

It's definitely a tightrope walk here. He doesn't say that the 1 ft/s difference was caused by the suppressor, rather he states that the numbers were on average 1 ft/s faster while using the suppressor. Which is true. Also, there's a function called "freebore acceleration" or "freebore boost" that can occur with suppressors. This is when the projectile has left the barrel and is suspended in the chamber of the baffles inside the suppressor. Jace LeRoy yea.. that is why the first shot suppressed was 2711fps and the other was 2755. On the first shot the suppressor didnt have any pressure inside.

I would think subsonic ammunition would be a different subject entirely as they are testing standard ammunition/s with a external suppressor. Does a game actively tell us that we are changing from standard ammunition to subsonic when applying a "silencer" attribute? non that I have ever played at least.

^ This is exactly why I think the trope exist on the damage and range decrease in games. Also sub ammo decreases the sound as well do to no sonic crack. This video is meant to show what happens when you add a suppressor to a standard rifle or pistol compared to what happens when you do the same thing within video games. The Magneto speed Chronograph is very accurate in measuring muzzle velocity in feet per second.

The difference here is that even the MP5SD's silencer doesn't actually reduce velocity, it's the porting in the barrel that does that. A silencer will never negatively affect velocity, in some cases it actually adds velocity due to a free bore boost. Only porting in a barrel will reduce velocity, and that's a given whether you have a can over the barrel or not. Magnetospeed chronos are about the most accurate chronos out there, are are accurate down to that level of precision. To get any more precise you'd have to use high speed footage and calculate velocity. Few ballistic tests are capable of producing consistent results. Even with calibrated ballistic gel, exact measurements of penetration, bullet weight retention, and high speed cameras....the end result is that you'll find these tests produce more inconsistencies via terminal bullet performance than bullet velocity. Meaning, the bullet's construction and consistency will skew results far more than bullet velocity will. The water jug test was simply a physical representation of the fact that a silencer does not adversely affect bullet energy.

It is an intergrated silencer hence it by design is reducing the bullets to subsonic velocity. So technically some silencers do slow down bullets in particular if a silencer uses wipes which the bullet impacts and slows down. Wipes are an old tech that has fallen out of favor but that is one of the reason a number of people said silencers slow down bullets.

Incorrect. The silencer is not actually integral on an MP5SD, it is removable, so the barrel is inconsequential. Wipes do not affect velocity either, and they're still being used today in a limited capacity.

It is an integral silencer design even if the tube is removable. Wipes do slow down the bullet. They were thick enough to slow down the bullet and were not a disk but a wedge shaped design. You are confusing wipes with baffles. A wipe does slow down the bullet. A rubber baffle didn't slow down the bullet.
