Exhaust Gas Temperatures (EGT's) are killing you're Diesel, and you don't even know it.
Well, the EGT's won't kill your engine, but they will tell you if something else is trying to.
EGT's tell you how hard your engine is working. The harder the engine is worked, the higher the EGT's will be. Additionally, if there is a failed components causing an intake or exhaust restriction, or an over-fueling situation, the EGT's can spike and indicate the problem.
But you'll never know that unless you install a Pyrometer to measure your EGT's.
In this video, I cover:
1. The Science of EGT's (Combustion Temp vs EGT)
2. Proper Pyrometer Instal (Thermocouple tech and Placement)
3. How to Control EGT's (Tuning, Exhaust Mods, Intercooler, Turbos, Driving Style)

God your explanations are on point, easy to understand the more complex areas which is rare. The humour just adds that bit more “flavour”. I’ve been into diesels for 30 plus years and you have explained all my years of knowledge into a tiny window of time…congratulations.

Peterbilt tech here and i cannot tell these guys enough how much heat the engine retains with out the EGR on these newer engines, not uncommon to see a newely "offroaded" engine, torch a head or turbo shortly after. Great video!

@freedomworx 4 месяца назад
Thanks for watching. Yeah, very few people actually understand what an EGR system actually does, they just know that they don't want it. If you're going to delete it, you best adjust the tuning to account for it, or you can definitely burn one down. 👍
@kainhall

@freedomworx even 80hp GM 2.5 "iron duke/tech 4" will melt a piston if the EGR is deleted . You have to be using it JUST RIGHT to get the 80hp to get hot enough But it can happen . . If the EGR is designed well (aka, doesn't fill the intake with soot, the pipe itself doesnt plug, etc etc)..... I'm keeping it

It’s hardly noticeable in diesel engines they have so much heat sink mass compared to gas engines. It’s truly pretty much a nox burner on a diesel. Most of the time u notice them melting is cuz the tuners (which is why u notice after tamper) go crazy on timing tryna get em responsive and completely forget these are diiiirectttt injection lol there’s hardly any dwell and we have a pilot shot to take up all dwell. Boost is response and timing is head gasket and valve seat popper, not the other way around like majority thinks. It’s all about cylinder pressures n egt on the danger side and boost and air density on the fun side. Gale really explains it best n simply. I started referring ppl to his videos so I don’t have to waste time convincing n can get back to work

Life on a semi engine they are now designed with all this emissions crap end up running hotter temps supposedly to burn off pollutants which means your engine is cooking life out of its self which will leed to a early failure plus they claim you can go extended oil changes but thats only leeding to more stuff in engines oil system flowing around killing rings bearings and components..so you use to get up to 2 million miles on a diesel if maintained good but now you get 600-750k miles and thier shot sometimes around 350k to 400k miles then probelms happen ...EPA is a joke thier mission is to kill our ecomany any which way thier comunist heart tells em to do it...its un-American!
@freedomworx
@freedomworx 4 месяца назад
Newer emissions equipped engines don't run hotter, their emissions systems run hotter so that the catalysts in the exhaust system can do their jobs. The purpose of the EGR system is to keep the combustion temperatures lower to reduce NOX emissions.

Though I'd throw this out there, the oil squirters are one of the main reasons the pistons don't melt. I have a 3406e 2ws that was inframed by the owner, they removed piston/rods without removing the oil squirters, it went 16k miles and I bought it. 2nd time I pulled a trailer at 925 post turbo temp it melted #2. They were bent just enough the piston wasn't cooled properly, but compared to the new squirters they looked identical except for light scratches.
@freedomworx
@freedomworx 4 месяца назад
Yep. That's what I was referring to when I said the heat is lost to the oil. Are those a 2 piece or 1 piece piston? Does the oil shoot into a hole in the bottom of the piston on those?
@nicoletingey4995
@nicoletingey4995 4 месяца назад
@freedomworx they are 2 piece piston, the squirters have 2 bent pipes and they have it figured out so they cover the bottom of the piston on each side when it's at the highest Temps. I really couldn't tell a difference on the angles new to the old scratched ones but it worked, it's set at 550 ish and it put all my new drivers in it. It won't pull as hard as some of my 700 hp cats but it an awesome engine. I have actually had older drivers mock me for running manifold ( pre turbo) and post turbo k type senders in an autometer dual input pyro. But the factory, and other options are so slow and wildly inaccurate. I just prefer to know exactly what my right foot is doing so I install the dual pyros in all my big trucks and just pre turbo in pickups. By the way, what shell is your laser pointer. Good job on the video by the way.

@freedomworx
@freedomworx 4 месяца назад
Yes, timing definitely has an effect. Retarding the timing will increase EGT and turbine drive pressure.Retarding timing is a strategy to spool turbos faster while staging. Most common rails are using multiple injection events now, so timing is a little weird. You spread the injection over a longer period of time to decrease peak cylinder temp and pressure, but maintain average cylinder temp or pressure. Good question

The only rule really is: The leaner a diesel runs the better. Less emissions, more efficiency. More air = more good. More fuel but not more air = eww rolling coal like a mf and dogshit fuel economy paired with high EGTs. More air makes the diesel happy aka spooly boi go brrr.

@@freedomworx Thanks. Good to know. So on my 14yr old "SS Competition" EGT I tried replacing the failed (K-type) probe with another one I got with a cheap chinese EGT and it sorta works. Gauge seems to show temps of 1/2 to 2/3 of reality. Now that I know probes are supposed to output standard voltages (and have found these published values srdata.nist.gov/its90/menu/menu.html ) I'll pull out the probe and test it at specific temps to see what voltages it's producing. Application is a Mitsubishi 4D56 turbo diesel that are notorious for cracking aluminum heads when ran too hard.

what's better for the engine under extreme load and fueling? I've only watched the first 6mins of this video, so if it's answered later please feel free to say "watch the damn video". 1. higher rpm / lower gearing, with slightly lower boost and EGTs 2. lower rpm, taller gearing, but slightly higher boost and EGTs I'm guessing there's a trade off between options 1 and 2 due to the 'recovery' time between combustion cycles being reduced with higher rpms. is this true? i usually try to be a option 1 driver, as i've always focused on EGT and lowering strain from over-gearing. But am i wrong? Thanks, and excellent video too!

I like how you point out how the thought that the emission control and noise control systems in a modern truck are the largest exhaust bottleneck is false, and the downpipe is the real major issue. The first generation emission control systems WERE downright awful for performance, and also were not durable. They used packed crystal catalyst. About the only thing truck owners liked about them is the fact that they increased emission noise not unlike a glass pack on a motorcycle, something neighbors hated about them.
@freedomworx
@freedomworx 3 месяца назад
I'm not sure that't the impression I was trying to make. I was making that statement in reference to non-emissions equipped vehicles. After treatment devices do create back pressure beyond the down-pipe. Installing a bigger down-pipe on an emissions equipped diesel isn't going to have nearly the effect that it would on a pre-emissions or deleted vehicle. Also, on a Cummins equipped truck, the down-pipes are already large enough because the turbo is on the side of the engine, so the down-pipe doesn't have to squeeze between the engine and the firewall like on a V configuration engine.

For the nerd explanation of a thermocouple: When you bind two metals together the point at which they merge forms a diode, much like a crystal in a crystal radio. This point is basically a semiconductor junction but unlike other semiconductors has stronger properties . All diodes have all the following properties, but each one is built to maximize one and exploit it.: 1. They conduct electricity more easily one direction than the other. 2. They completely block electricity on the direction they provide resistance in up to a certain voltage threshold. 3. They create a small amount of light when electricity is run through them. 4. They transfer heat from one side to the other when electricity is run through them. 5. When heat is forced from one side to the other they generate a small amount of electricity. 6. When exposed to light they generate a small amount of electricity. 7. Properties 1 and 2 change in threshold based on temperature to an amount based on material. 8. Properties 1 and 2 change based on light exposure. Thermocouples are designed to maximize the 7th behavior I listed, while minimizing the others. They are also designed to have that behavior appear in the most reliable manner possible. Hence, when attached to a voltage source, a known resistor load, and an appropriate electrical measurement circuit, you can read the heat the that the thermocouple is tied to with a high degree of accuracy.

A lot of people hate on EGR because they think that it clogs up their intake. It's not that, it's actually the PCV valve (aka my mortal enemy). Let's think about that. Normally, your exhaust should have gas and dry dust flying out the back. So, it doesn't make sense for dry dust to cause a wet goopy mess in your intake valves. You know what does cause wet goopy messes? Oil vapors. The reason that the PCV is my enemy is due to the way it's implemented. It's there to make the air pressure on top of the piston be the same as on the bottom of the piston. So, like, WHY NOT ROUTE THE PCV FROM THE CRANKCASE TO THE VALVETRAIN? Why would they ever choose to spray the intake with an oily mist when they could spray the valve train with an oily mist? I hope you can see why I don't like the PCV. P.S. you engine experiences something called "pumping losses" at low rpm. The EGR actually helps to mitigate that. In short, it basically allows you to open the butterfly intake to like 50% but you only get 10% power which is good for low rpm pumping losses (numbers are just made up to illustrate a point).
@freedomworx
@freedomworx 2 месяца назад
You can’t vent the crankcase pressure to the crankcase. The pressure in the bottom end of the engine is the same as the pressure under the valve cover. 🤷🏻‍♂️ EGR only affects pumping losses in spark ignition engines with throttle bodies. Doesn’t offer that benefit on a diesel.

I used a thermocouple and would never let the engine run over 650deg Celsius normal driving. When racing however i would regularly bnild dngines that could see 800deg quite safely. The biggest killer for any diesel is poor quality fuel.. and possibly oil starvation... or maybe water ingestion...and occasionally a failed governor...but there was that one time the timing belt snapped, that shaffted the poor girl pretty hard. I always measured at the down pipe for ease of fitting.
