I love both version tbh they have differences, but they are not "disturbing" differences - for me. It's the same situation that has been replayed in another way. The first Maria seems more confident and "gets into it", the second is more attentive and gentle in her manner.
People really don't give Guy Cihi credit enough for his performance as James Sunderland, as it's one of the most nuanced and genuine pieces of voice acting in any game ever. This cutscene in particular shows a good range of emotion coming from James, from the real brief happines of him when sees Maria the first time, his deception and sadness when he realizes that's not Mary, but he also sounds totally surprised a moment later. Is amazing how Cihi is able to convey all those emotions in just a moment. Also one of the best details about his performance and how it characterize James is that innocent tone he puts on some lines. Like when he tells Maria that he got a letter, Guy really makes that simple line sound like James actually believes a letter is a real proof of his wife being alive despite he knows Mary died.
Yes! He so subtly conveyed James' clumsiness and the way he says "Yeah, FINE...", obviously not wanting Maria to follow him. And in the remake they cut that line, and a lot of those subtle moments in general, and ended up twisting the characters.
In the original SH 2 when James says Mary you feel happiness in his voice, he knows what he did but he still had a small hope that he really found her. Now in Remake you feel a big change, the tone of happiness is gone and now there is only doubt in his voice, as if he doesn't believe in what he is seeing because he knows that this is not possible.
I think the remake tried to correct some things and added more depth and realism to the characters. James is more skeptical here as he says that receiving a letter from his late wife and coming all the way to this town sounds silly. I’m not too impressed with the voice acting in the original anymore. Sure they gave more lively performances but there’s less realism in them.
I agree. The og has quite a bit of jank and wooden dialog. In the remake Maria is way more seductive and also way more subversive. If we speak in Jungian terms remake Maria is like a dark caregiver archetype. She's tuned into James and slowly but surely pulls him deeper into his delusions. Every time he doubts his own sanity, she pulls him right back in.
I think James in the remake did a good job though Maria the OG one still takes the cake! The OG still has that Jacob ladder like conversation , while the remake makes it more normal I suppose. The thing about OG silent hills and even silent other older silent hills was that whenever you meet a character they just left you even more confused lol….which then added to the feeling of anxiety stress and being lost. Despite all this I am still loving the remake, at the hospital right now!
Please expand on the Jacob ladder reference in this meeting between James & Maria. I've watched that movie so many times now, I don't remember an interaction like this in that movie
The original has sooooo much more character and eeriness in the dialogue. The remake looks and plays great but as we've all learned from all these remakes...the classics never die.
The voices for me are worst performances in the original but I like the way the whole thing looks and the way is directed. Maria looks kinda weird now tho
@@magicman25103 The original conveys better the feeling that Mary is actually another production of the town reflecting James's subconscious. And James's guilty attraction and repressed desires.
Thats nostalgia baiting you. I didn''t know the original and seeing them side by side, god the original voice acting is awful. As if they asked some random people on the street to recite some lines. You may excuse it as "eerie" or "awkward" or "unreal" fitting the silent hill theme....but it's excuses what they are.
@@miladysnowdrop7304 Not completely sure, I have never played any silent hill in my life and honestly don’t have any type of nostalgia, and while the voice acting is definitely better in the remake, there is something about the camera work and character design, animation and color in the original that just really grabs me in a way that the new one doesn’t, especially the camera work and color, it really feels surreal and dreamlike in a weird way that I really like, like the Russian version of Alice in wonderland or paranoia agent
I don't understand people why hates those who told original scenes is better. Yeah, this better! Original game has weird scare atmosphere and the acting shows it. P. S. This not nostalgia, because I was born after game premier
Loved the remake, im watching the og cutscenes to see how different it is, but its very faithful. People are complaining a lot for no reason even before the game came out, is better to judge yourself while or AFTER playing the game and not make incorrect assumptions
I think the James from the remake is ok. My problem is with Maria, the seductive attitude, in vocal and mannerisms is done better in the original. I also don´t like her face, too big? rough? masculine? I don't know how to pin point exactly my problem with it. In the original we can see the scene from various angles too, the remake is always the same horizontal position.
Maria is infinetely better in the Original. Her demeanor ,seductive voice and femme fatale vibe is perfect . The way of talking and plus add the face animation especially with the eyes . Anyone saying otherwise about the remake Maria is smoking weed hard 😂 PS : i have never played the original so cut the crap about the nostalgia argument
It’s not about which is better. They are very different portrayals. The original is more dreamlike which was common in horror movies and games back then. She’s more humanlike and I find her more likable too. In the remake, she’s rather otherworldly which is on point. She’s a mysterious and ghostly being after all. I like that it added depth and realism to her character. Just imagine you’re James and you found someone who looks like your late wife. Isn’t that too strange? She looks and acts like a ghost indeed.
@Jed-Rix OG IS better , i don't Care about the remake portrayal because it fail on many department unfortunately including Maria . The remake give us a New Character therefore changing her and the tone .
@@rijusnar1994 Well that’s your opinion. I just don’t get why you think the OG is way better when you haven’t even played it. I think OG Maria isn’t really that impressive overall. It was great for its time but the remake for sure has its amazing qualities too.
@Jed-Rix Saw a playtrough one month before the remake release . It IS , my initial comment gave the difference, maybe you were to blind or deaf to notice it like most New gen player who believe New graphics and lazy voice acting IS enough to call a game a masterpieces. Some people don't understand subtle details in art unfortunately
@@rijusnar1994 Some people don’t understand subtle details… Lol are you talking about yourself? The remake relies more on subtle details like the characters’ facial expressions and gestures. That wasn’t the case in the original because they couldn’t do that well due to the limits of technology back then. That’s probably why it relied more on the voice acting. It even needed CG cutscenes to show the characters’ expressions more clearly. But the remake could do those expressions better that there’s no single CG cutscene used in the game. Excuse you! Maybe you’re the one who’s too visually impaired or hearing impaired to notice that.
I think I like how the og is set up and I like Maria’s voice more. Idk how I would explain Guy’s voice. It’s nice. He sounds so oblivious to his misdeeds, this manifestation of Maria, but at the same time determined Luke is nice too. He sounds, real? He clearly longs for his wife and sounds like he’s almost at that point where he knows what he did but he’s loosing sight of his goals. He’s confused and soft spoken.
Remake have the realistic, grounded approach. Back in 2001 the audience were different, movies were different, acting was different, technology was different. The characters in origjnal barely seems to be in a conversation, more like two people talking alone to itself. Remake gets the story to contemporary times, technology has improved and now the characters really looks like they are talking directly as real people.
which was not the point of the direction, it was to make you feel more helpless and isolated, like the people you met were not reliable. The remake just doesn't hit.
@@MaLcH10R you didn't get my comment. Team Silent never directed the original VA to sound like that. It was early 2000's and VA in games were in the beginnings. It's just bad voice acting you people have to accept this is as a fact of life. The bad acting helped the game to be more dreamy and Lynchian? Certainly. But that was NOT the intention.
Clumsy and stilted voice acting is never intentional. Let's be real here. You can capture the eerie and faraway, mistrustful vibe while still sounding like you aren't in a recording booth reading lines off a piece of paper for the first time. Remake did it better. Period. And I deeply enjoyed the original, but I also really love seeing progress.
In the original james looks like a lost and confused child. In the remake the acting is better. But i kinda like mary better in the original. Aswell as angela eventhough the new angela is good too.
@@1theprince1 Original James also sounds weirdly innocent and genuine most of the time. My favorite part is how he tells Maria that got a letter from Mary, as Guy Cihi really makes it sounds like James think that letter is an undeniable proof of his wife being alive despite she's dead and he knows it. Remake James on the other hand sounds more like a guy who tries to lie to himself but never believes his own story. Is like is missing that twist.
@@RedRan6er it makes perfect sense. You don't get it, probably cause you never played the OG, just watched a bunch of comparison scenes online thinking you got the tone of it all, how it's supposed to be. Your opinion means jack sht.
@@1theprince1 bruh i played all the trilogies and other spinoffs multiple times since 2016 and i know what im talking about, you however sound like you just watched a retrospectiveand called it a day
The more I play the Remake, the more I love it. The original will always be good but some of it starts to feel old, In a bad way. Especially now that it has been refined. The acting for example is much moe fluid and real in the Remake.
I'm not sorry to say I can't understand how you can think the remake is better, let alone good. There's barely any body language or do the characters move around. it decided to take every details and subtleties to make them 50 times heavier (or completely ignore. In the OG, when James continue talking about Maria looking like Mary and gesturing, you see Maria getting exasperated. In the remake, just nothing). Just look at where Maria is found, on a gazebo on the water instead of the waterfront (need to make sure the player get she's important) and then physical putting herself in the way out. Because that's the lightest symbolism Blooper is capable of, even when handed down something. Even the damn camera work is worse, just face shots or over the shoulder. It's simply impressing in it's blandness.
Every character in the remake looks boring and sound like they're about to fall sleep, meanwhile in the original they're hypnotic and they almost look like ghosts, the blonde hair, the piercing blue eyes, their pale skin, they feel like part of the town, which is also reflected on the "bad" acting.
I agree. Remake in not bad at all, but it didn't quite get the atmosphere, colour pannel and behaviour too well. If you've never played SH2 but you have SH1 and/or SH3 (even The Room) you'd still find this one "off". They seemed to have drawn way too much inluence from the RE 7 & 8 games
The Remake blows the original in terms of actually being "playable and fun." But I prefer the character models of the original. Maria definitely has that young "Cameron Diaz" look to her. Also both games have great voice work, but I think some scenes are better with the older voice, for example Angela's final moment in the burning staircase was better in the original. She sounded way more full of despair and desperation. "New James" looks good I guess, and "New" Eddie is creepier too. The new female faces look.....weird. New Laura looks so much older than eight, she looks like she is 15 or something.
“She sounded way more full of despair and desperation” did we play the same game, bc no she didn’t lol. The original had its charm for sure, but Angela’s voice def wasn’t the most fitting for her.
I like both, both Maria's have their own charm and way to be seductive (take if from someone who was born in 2006 and saw her cousins play SH2 back in the day)
The original is iconic, but this Maria seems than her age, she's even more expressive like AAAA (she even made me blush😢) I'm really happy with Maria from the remake
Honestly, i think the remake has more depth, sadness, bitter solitude, a sense of loss and yearning than the original. The remake really makes me sad ... it presents the depressive, sad, and pitful uncontrolled side of such suffering
In the OG, she’s kinda disturbing and openly flirty while James speaks his mind without a filter. 😅 …in the remake, Maria is still creepy while James is too confused to say anything. Overall, both versions are ok to me. …..music kinda drains away the scary factor though. 🤣
Im sorry the original is better.. i know the original composer came back and most of his remixes are great for the remake, but sorry he completely ruin this scene for me in the remake. remix gives off old 80s porno music.
Maria in the original is more feminine look while the remake one has a male jawline. However I prefer James' s voice in the remake more than the original.
I like the Remake version more. But Maria’s very first line “Do I look like your girlfriend?” doesn’t seem to fit the tone of it. The actress could’ve put a little more emotion to it. But other than that, I think the remake nailed this specific scene of first meeting Maria. She’s definitely portrayed here as the eerie and ghostly being that she is and I like it. It definitely adds more depth to her character. The gazebo and fog are also nice touches that improve this special scene. It’s as if she came out of the fog and makes you feel that you could be hallucinating as James is seeing someone who looks very much like his late wife. In the original, Maria just looks like a normal person because of the very normal voice acting. That style of voice acting is outdated.
They turned young cameron diaz Maria into middle aged soccer mom, and people claim there's no dei influence in the remake when Hit detect is literally listed in the credits.
@1theprince1 They probably hired them for consulting to get the best portrayal of the sexual abuse plot from the original. Probably wanted to make sure it came across as believable with actual good acting this time. What you liked about the original was lower-detail graphics and bad acting, which wasn’t really optimal or intended.
@1theprince1 Even if it was as bad as you feel…yeah, it’s still better. That’s how bad the original’s clunky, awkward line deliveries are. Not Resident Evil, but still bad.
I absolutely dont get so many comments here. In the original they sound so stiff. Like reading from the script they got to check 10 min ago and they had 1 hour to finish reading through all their lines. How can you not hear that? I was actually relieved when MoistCricital pointed out the stiffness of the original VAs in his review. Like, , you can say it adds to the vibe of a game, but if it was the other way around and this voice acting was in the remake, it would be mocked to no end.
I know, its hilarious to hear them talk about the old game in such a pretentious way. Suddenly turn into film critics and label subjective elements as analysed facts lol.
People complaining about new Mary's head being too big but if they made the new model from the exact proportions they'd be complaining about dumb shit like "ew shoulders too big"
@@stefanos.7399 "normal" is the korean golf heads on six foot bodies? Yaeh sure, grow up, man, new Maria has normal reproductiveability female body, built not for farm work
I like both, but they definitely have different tones to them. Meeting Maria in the og felt more unsettling, to me at least. It feels like she knows more than you do but isn’t telling you, makes you feel like you don’t know whether you can trust her. New Maria has a much more inviting tone, she seems much friendlier. Maybe just me, still think both are really well done though!
She doesn’t look that bad to me. It’s just that the devs used the VAs as the face models for their characters as well. That seems like lazy work to me. That wasn’t the case in the RE remakes. Ashley for example had a face model, a body model and a voice actress which are all different people. I guess they really wanted her to be perfect.
Your description fits the original more than the remake. You can literally see how everything seemed rushed in the original by how fast they talk. You like the original more doesn’t mean you have to call the remake trash. You probably didn’t even play the remake.
@@JAMJOOM_GAMER Some people like yourself can’t get over the original because of nostalgia or other reasons, which is totally fine since we are allowed to choose what we like. But that doesn’t mean you need to downgrade the remake, instead you can simply say that you prefer the original🙂
fast and sloppy? are we even watching the same video? lol. the remake aimed for realism and that’s exactly what the actors gave us. knowing what depression is like as i’ve seen it in relatives, luke roberts did an amazing job at realistically portraying a depressed man. unenthusiastic, overly cautious, tired and slow demeanor, his performance is very real. please get out more.
i'm sorry original enjoyers but og voice acting sounds loke two bots're talking, it just feels somehow like there is no connection in what they are saying to each other
These comments are downright ridiculous. Some of ya'll didn't even play the original, and ya'll are hating on the remake. ya'll know damn well the original one had horrible voice acting 💀
OG SH2 is my favorite game of all time, and I honestly think both takes on this scene are basically equal. Remake has a blanketly more naturalist approach to its performances that matches its increase in fidelity, and I think it works. The old performances are irreplaceable (as evidenced by the HD remaster re-dub lol) and Bloober knew that. A completely different approach to voice direction was necessary for the remake to work and stand on its own.
Voice acting, character design and optimization is 💩 the rest is ok. I really like the SH atmosphere but those characters are disgusting AF, specially the new Angela and Maria.
