Ah, the Balkan Church. I loved that place, not only because of the beautiful music, but because it gave me a chance to calm down after having survived the hell at Midwich Elementary.

Yeah, Silent Hill 1's Otherworld sections were EXTREMELY hostile and stressful. I remember first leaving Midwich Elementary and heaving a sigh of relief seeing the eerie fog and light snow. But even then, I was uneasy, wary, as I heard the church bell toll.
It's like, you know that there is something onimous waiting for you in the depths of darkness but still, you feel comfortable. This curiosity, this mistery, it is as if you belong there, even though, you will only encounter horrific experiences. Comfort in the depths of fear, comfort in a hell full of grotesque scenes and comfort in exploring the undescribable feeling that we all receive from Silent Hill's sound design.
Best track in the series tbh, it feels surreal to listen to this outside at 4 am, the world feels so illegitimate and uncanny in the most comforting way possible
Here's one possible reason for why this track is so interesting: The track starts in Bb minor, but every single chord movement after Bb is parallel, and moves up by two half steps (Bbm, Cm, Dm, Em, then one Ebm and back to Bbm). So basically, this chord progression doesn't belong to any key signature at all. Awesome and super creative.
That's something I had never imagined! I just thought this sounded cool because of how "eerie" it was, I thought it fits the atmosphere of a church in Silent Hill, that was all. Thanks a lot for the details on it! One song that I think might be just as interesting is a theme from Mega Man X3, the Blizzard Buffalo Stage theme.
also you seem to have musical theory knowledge, this to me sounds like a march. do millitary marches have similar structure or am i just babbling and comepletely wrong
@@silverricx Most marches are actually around this tempo (even the imperial march has almost the exact same bpm) but usually marches have some sort of percussion. It has a solid quarter note march feel though, I get what you mean

Saturday Autumn morning (around 8 o'clock), cold and foggy weather outside, no one outside, in my bed and playing SH1... So clearly remember church scene and this soundtrack. It looked like time stopped. Wow, it was really great feeling. Wish all games would leave great memories.

I love listening to this on a quiet, dark, and foggy night. Lit up only by the lonely street lamps peppered around here and there in front of me. This is the theme of a thought-provoking limbo, taking place within your head.
SPOILERS Well, depending on the ending you get in this game, one of the endings suggests that everything Harry just went through was ALL. IN. HIS. HEAD. His brain is slowly dying in the scene of the car crash.
@@mannyg4606 I'm a night guard in my city and some nights are exactly like this, fog, moisture, darkness only illuminated by street lamps here and there. Love walking around like this. But, sometimes I fell some type of primal dread.
Before I played Silent Hill, I didn't understand what video games were capable of. Silent Hill is more than a mere horror game. It's an interactive work of art.
Ran a D&D session where my party opened a door in a mysterious lab conducting horrific experiments and used a bunch of Silent Hill tracks for it. They opened the door and found themselves in the foggy town, this was one of my favorite tracks to use. None of them had any idea what the Silent Hill series was, but i could tell that they were terrified.
This is possibly my favorite Silent Hill song. It's like I feel alone, but also comfortable. I've gone on walks on rainy, foggy days before, and this is a song that comes to mind. Nobody around, and while it is rather dreary out, it's also peaceful and allows you a chance to let your eyes and your mind wander. I love those walks, just as I love this song.

I bought original copies of the first 3 games (which costed me over $350) just based of the music. Played though the first game and instead of immediately moving on to 2 right away like I planned to, I kept playing this one over and over until I got all the endings. I'm not much of a horror game fan but, I was shocked by how much I ended up enjoying this over 2 decade old game. Every playthough, when meeting Dahlia for the first time, I spend a little extra time in the church just so I can enjoy this music. To anyone who hasn't experienced the original Silent hill, It absolutely holds up. Sure the voice acting isn't the greatest and the tank controls can take a minute to get used to, but the PS1 graphics actually help the overall feel a lot. I'm gonna play through 2 soon and then 3 after that. I can't wait to sink even more hours into them.
Yep, I love SH1 - it's my personal favourite of the series. It's so replayable and I've played it so much that starting a playthrough I can just let my muscle memory take over, atleast for 75% of the game. But I will never forget my first playthrough, exploring the town for the first time and experiencing the emotions of loneliness, anxiety, fear and confusion the first time playing it. It's so good. SH2 was also incredible and objectively the best. I just find SH1 my personal favourite.
Silent Hill is a power that walks you down a dark set of steps into the deep unknown of your subconcious mind to confront all the terrors that you have allowed to lay dormant for decades.
Comforts me in a very "there's-mind-losing-danger-outside-come-inside-and-be-patient-until-all-of-this-passes" way, and yet I still don't feel very safe...
Silent hill is what got me into the lo fi trip hop genre, where you don’t even need words or lyrics to convey rich emotion. I picked up on tricky, massive attack, dj shadow, dj krush, portishead just to name a few
This makes me feel really nostalgic and in the same time I feel like I'm traveling through the universe....It's weird how far one soundtrack can get you
I just finished a front to back playthrough/deep lore stream of Silent Hill 1 yesterday. While preparing my notes. I reheard to this song after some time and it instantly became quite possibly my favorite Akira Yamaoka song. Truly brilliant work done by him and all the following games he did.

I recently discovered this tune as it was used as a sample for a German rap song (10,9 by Jamule is the song in question) and I absolutely loved it. The tune itself is so simple, slightly creepy but relaxing at the same time. Love it
I returned to the silent hill soundtrack when the streets of my town went quiet cause of covid. I couldn’t sleep so I would wander the streets pretending I was in silent hill.
@jose miranda it deserves a remake more than sh2 because the PS1 visuals are kind of dated, whereas the PS2 visuals of sh2 and sh3 still hold up pretty well today. Also it only release in the PS1 making it very and accessible for people who don't know how to emulate PS1 games. Plus the Xbox version of sh2 is really cheap and it's backwards compatible so it's way more accessible than sh1. Sorry for the essay it was just something I was thinking of.
@@LincolnAKAVenox I feel that sh2 deserves it more, sh1 had a lot more of attention back then with a movie, sh origins as a prequel, and sh shattered memories as a reinterpretation of the game.
I don't know why, but there's something about the first Silent Hill game, it's a strange feeling, when there's mist I feel like home, weird because my town doesn't look at all like Silent Hill, but that's how I feel
Good mix. alot of times when they make an extended version its choppy where it was put together, this flows nice and smooth like this is the way it was supposed to be. Great tune to play in my car when its raining.
