And Troy, where he plays one of the like 2 Greek heroes to actually make it though the Trojan war with his life. Even if it took an additional 10 years and a whole mess of mythological monsters, nymphs, and gods messing with him before he finally made it home after that war, which was already ten years long itself....

I think the first one should be… the second one… wile I liked certain things about it… it was the worst of the 2 film…. Also the story in the 2nd film could have been much better…. Though I kinda wish we knew what happened to the parents when her mother was trapped in silent hill and her farther goes to find her after they escaped…. Did they die… did they get out and be a family again…. We’re they both trapped in there forever

I find it to be the best video game film adaptation. My only complaint is the exposition dump towards the end.... The sequel is a steaming pile of garbage.

I feel like no one talks about the visuals in this movie, seeing the environments peel back and reveal the rustic otherworld when the sirens Blair, and then the walls slowly start rebuilding again when the characters are back to the normal world. The way the other world is very dull and grey when in silent hill and another shot set outside of the town pops with colour, the contrast is absolutely stunning.

What disappoints me is that it's so close to being a genuinely decent adaption, but JUST misses the mark. It's not great by any means. But definitely is fun when looked at what it is... This movie has one of the most depressing endings of all time. (Spoilers) You fight off the all the horrors of hell, save your daughter, escape from this horrible town, and finally make your way home... only to find that no one is there... and that it’s not the same. It’s a foggy nightmare dream version of your home... and then you realize you never really escaped to begin with.

Great idea for the movie, but still, that's not how Silent Hill works. That only happens in the town, because it was built on top of a Native burial ground, where the Natives previously lived and prayed, as they always felt the area had a strong spiritual presence. Then that presence turned evil, as more tragedies occurred and as the Colonists started a Cult for worshipping, well, evil.

I watched it when I was in college with my sister and friend (he explained that it was a game adaptation). As someone who hadn't played the game, I was really invested and spooked by this movie. I could clearly see how it was a game, but that really worked for the movie. I liked the characters, the atmosphere was intense and I didn't mind the husband character, as well. Favorite character of the movie was the cop (sobs). I felt that the movie was clear, especially with the exposition flashbacks. Overall really enjoyed it and it was a fun, intense time.

I loved this movie, so did my sister. Fun fact, one of the screenwriters for this was Oscar winner Roger Avary, who won an Oscar along with Quentin Tarantino for Pulp Fiction. There was an interview where he went into this movie acknowledging the bad rep video game movies got, courtesy of Uwe Boll, wanting to change that. I also like the fact that the only music in this movie that is not from Akira Yamaoka is just after the first point when Silent Hill changes back to "normal", and yet it is still fitting. Ring of Fire by Johnny Cash. The fact that they really wanted to do a lot of practical effects is a plus, and on top of that I like that they even chose to emulate some of the camera angles in the game, like when the camera is tracking Radha Mitchell character from up in the corner, looking down at her and sort of tracking in this deliberately jarring V shape. Coincidentally, as much as I love the game, I kind of sucked at it. I missed a ton of shit, and ended up with the ending where your character is dead in his car after the crash. Same goes for Silent Hill 2. On a side note, and I know I'm going to be annoying for doing this AGAIN, but have you seen Exorcist III, aka Exorcist Legion? If you haven't, you should give it a look. I would argue it is better than Exorcist: Heretic, and easily better than Exorcist in the Beginning (the final exorcism and that movie looks like something out of an old Raimi film). But more than that, it is a fine companion piece to the original movie. Less of a horror movie and more of a thriller, it still has some disturbing elements, solid ties to the original (courtesy of the fact that William Peter Blatty, who wrote and adapted the screenplay for original also did the same for Legion as well as directing it), and it actually has one of the best jump-scare scenes I have ever seen in terms of its effect on me. The movie features Brad Dourif in probably one of his best roles, and fantastic acting from Ed Flanders and George C. Scott, who play two characters who have become friends over their connection to Father Damien Karras in the original. if anyone is interested in watching this, I do believe it is on Amazon Prime right now.

I think that Chris will eventually do that. Honestly, that film was so bad, I remember having so much high hopes for it after the first film and SHR literally ignores it down to the ending. It reminded me of how Halloween 4 & Friday the 13th: A New Beginning had a crazy mindfuck of an ending and the sequels just ignore it. Sean Bean & Radha Mitchell were the only good things about that sequel IMHO and they had limited screentime in it. It could've been so much better than it was. It's a shame too, because it had a solid cast of actors. I noticed that Frailty DVD behind Chris, so I hope Chris reviews that because that is another very underrated film too. My friend was a HUGE gamer and horror movie fan and raved about how much he loved both the game AND this movie. I had only heard faint rumors that the movie wasn't very good - BUT - while at Family Video one night , with literally everything of my interest gone , the manager suggested "Silent Hill" since he remembered that I had rented other horror movies. Relunctantly , I rented it out of boredom and a VERY small interest due to my friend's suggestion. WOW - this movie TRULY creeped me out in a major way - and it stayed with me for weeks !!!!! I loved that I had never played the game...everything about the story was totally original and a pleasant surprise for me - it was GREAT - and I'm still a fan !! I had low expectations of the second film , as reported by most , but it turned out I was able to enjoy that film as well. It is NOWHERE NEAR the quality of the first film and the lower budget and lack of respect for the franchise is obvious - but still enjoyable since I so love the characters and the atmosphere of Silent Hill's world.

Granted, it's far from perfect. Like you said, the husband storyline feels tacked on. The CGI doesn't really hold up and some of the acting from the townspeople is really over the top (and child actress who plays Sharon/Alessa also isn't very good in places). One thing to say about the husband storyline would be that it kind of gives an outside perspective to the town and the search, achieving two things imo: 1. A bit of a break from the persisting tension with the mother's storyline which i think is good for balancing, and 2. A chance for showing the nuanced connection between the two worlds, such as when he smelled her perfume as she passed by him in the yard. It was the same place and the same time but the worlds are different. Such details i think have added a lot to the movie. Great review as always!

Maybe it's because I grew up with it, but I adore this film. My mother showed it to me when I was 8 or so because she appreciated the message about religious trauma. Neither of us learned it was based on a video game till much later. As an adult, I love it for so many reasons. The atmospheric sets, the horrific monster designs, the message, the characters, the story, the performances, it's all brilliant. The scares are so visceral, so grotesque. They do not feel cheap or exploitative--they are utterly intimidating. Silent Hill was the first time I ever took notice of a film's sound design--I adored the rattling, clanking, screeching, and shuddering metal. The sound that stood out to me the most is when Pyramid-Head rips his gargantuan sword out of the wall, and it clangs against the concrete ground. Chills. The music is hauntingly beautiful. I will always remember how I felt when, at the end, Rose tells Dahlia "Mother is God, in the eyes of a child". As a kid, the delivery/meaning of that line struck me deeply. Everything about this film is striking, for better or worse. I've seen it hundreds of times, and will watch it hundreds more. I LOVE it!

Hello Chris, I love your annual Halloween specials. Halloween is without a doubt my favorite time of year. Since Doctor Sleep is coming out in a couple weeks, I decided to go through Mike Flanagan’s horror filmography. The Haunting of Hill House is my favorite show of 2018 which made me begin my respect for Mike Flanagan. I remember I was eagerly awaiting your review of The Haunting of Hill House ever since you mentioned at the end of one of your reviews you were going to review it. It took time for you to do so but when your did, I was throughly pleases that you loved the series as well as much I loved it as well. I just watched his first swing at the horror genre with the movie “Absentia”. I was impressed with the creative aspects of the film. So speaking of your annual Halloween specials, if you have the time, I hope you watch it and review it because I was impressed with what Mike Flanagan could do with a small budget. Perhaps you could do a short series of the remaining Mike Flanagan movies in preparation for a movie that happens to be a sequel to the movie such as The Shining. With Mike Flanagan begins the camera, I have the confidence he knows what he’s doing because of his choice to put character before scares. Thanks Chris if you had the time to read my long comment but it would genuinely mean a lot if you can continue to support what a great horror director he is and the genre in general.

@ichaelis Have to disagree there. The "mother is god" theme was not a part of the games at all, so putting it in and changing things to suit it was a bad move for an adaptation. I've played every SH game as well, and this doesn't work as anything but a visual homage. It looks the part, but butchered Alessa and Dahlia's characters, misuses creatures from the wrong game, gets parts of lore wrong or arbitrarily changes it, and dumbs it down for the sake of the general audience when a good writer could spend the exposition dump scenes and Sean Bean screen time actually doing some proper world-building. Example: The cult worships a god who is said to return one day to complete the unfinished task of creating paradise for her followers. A sect of the cult that Dahlia belongs to wishes to usher in her return, and Dahlia offers up her own daughter because of her psychic abilities that made her an outcast among her peers, believing her to be chosen for the purpose. The ritual goes awry, setting off a boiler explosion in Dahlia's basement, burning Alessa, but succeeds in impregnating her nonetheless. She sacrifices half her soul to prevent god from being born, creating the infant who was found and adopted by the Masons and given the name Cheryl. Dahlia uses a spell to prevent Alessa from dying, the unborn god inside her trapping her in an unending nightmare of never dying, nor healing until Cheryl is called back to Silent Hill where she begins the process of spreading the Seal of Metatron (or Metraton depending on which spelling you like) to try to seal the town off from the rest of the world, giving her own life so that others won't have to suffer at the hands of a wrathful deity. But in the process, she inadvertently spreads her other half's nightmarish hallucinations because of the town's spiritual power, creating the Otherworld that periodically manifests along Harry's journey. If I can sum it up in a paragraph, a good writer can do proper world-building with 30-45 minutes of screen time. And it does the one thing no adaptation should: it harms the perception of the source material. Too much misinformation has been spread because of this movie, and people now think this is what the games were. This version of Pyramid Head even showed up in Homecoming where he didn't belong. The film was well-made and well acted (for the most part), but it's not a good adaptation.
@d-skullgaming696
@d-skullgaming696 4 года назад
@@StCerberusEngel i must disagree with your assessment, my friend. I found many of its changes welcome, for instance, getting rid of Harry wasn't a bad move considering he was easily the blandest protagonist in the series. And in the original game Dahlia is simply evil for the sake of evil, so I don't see how making her a more tragic and sympathetic figure ruins her character, if anything it makes her better. I'd also have to disagree about the cult and the lore. Out of all the things in the series, the cult lore is easily the weakest and most convoluted aspect of the series, hence why Silent Hill 2, which has little to nothing to do with the cult, is considered the best in the series. The movie cuts out the fat and focuses on the main thing that was appealing about silent hill: its a story about a parent going through a nightmare world for the saje of their child.
@StCerberusEngel
@StCerberusEngel 4 года назад
@@d-skullgaming696 If you find Harry too bland, look at Shattered Memories. A film could give him more personality in a similar way. Also, he's a determined dad looking through hell for his missing child and won't stop until he finds her. I don't find anything bland about that. Christabella is evil for the sake of evil. They replaced offering her own child to birth their god for her twisted religion and sense of self-righteousness with "burn the witch because we're puritans". They replaced Dahlia with a doppelganger, and gave her a much less interesting motivation. As for the cult's motives, I explained precisely what went on in SH1 in a paragraph. I don't know what you think is so convoluted about it. The first game had some translation problems, but the third did a great job of clarifying that and delving deeper into Alessa's backstory. If you're still confused, I don't know what to tell you. Taste is taste, but the games did a much better job at what they set out to do than the movie did.
@StCerberusEngel
@StCerberusEngel 4 года назад
@ichaelis I wasn't saying you were saying it was from the games, I was simply saying that putting your own message in something where it previously wasn't, and then changing things to fit that theme is a bad move for an adaptation. You're supposed to adapt the source material, not change the source material for your own purpose. As I've already demonstrated, you can sum up the mythos in a paragraph. So yes, a movie can explore it in 2 hours. The movie wastes time as it is by repeating itself (Sean Bean's segments were useless) and literally having characters give exposition dumps to the audience. Yes, Gans' changes fit the theme he wanted to explore...but that theme was out of place for an adaptation of an existing story. The thing is, he could have given us an entirely new story, with new characters and new creatures for Silent Hill. The source material allows for that and he probably should have just done so. After all, isn't that what people want from Silent Hill; new interesting characters and stories? Like it if you want, but I found this movie severely lacking in all but its presentation.

Never thought you'd review this one. I used to love this movie, defended it anytime that it came up in conversation. But as a I grew older and became a passionate fan of the games, I kinda soured on it. While I applaud and appreciate Christophe Gans's love for the game and his desire to create something good, also the inclusion of Akira Yamaoka's score is just amazing, his representation of it was very flawed. The excessive need for slasher movie gore is definitely not needed. The game had blood and bodies all over the place but they were carefully placed and already been there before you even entered the area. There was really no need for that much gore. I will always argue that it's snow, not ash lol. I don't like Christophe where he practically says, and I'm paraphrasing, a father wouldn't go through hell to find and save his daughter. That is an absolute dick punch to any great fathers out there. Harry Mason is a great character for his resilience, he's a good man with good qualities and the love that he has for his daughter, he's a great character. While I also respect the attention to detail on certain things, a few of the monsters shouldn't be in the movie. I get that it was fan service and in adaptations you have to make some changes. But those changes shouldn't disregard the source material. The Lying Figure monster was a manifestation of James's internal suffering, a patient in agony like his wife was. She referred to herself as a monster. The nurses were a manifestation of James's sexual deprivation. And most importantly, Pyramid Head's portrayal. Pyramid Head was a manifestation of James's guilt and desire to be punished after what he did. Those three monsters have a reason for their appearances, in the movie, their appearances are not right. This movie could've an entirely new Silent Hill, canon to the storyline, the feminine feel of the female cast would be perfect in its own story but it had to be an adaptation. While I will always agree that a mother's love for her child is one of the most purest things in this world, so is the love of a father. It is just as special. And for Harry to be just thrown out and forgotten and replaced with a character that could easily lead her own story, it's just kinda disrespectful to the source material. At least I think it is. The things I just wrote can be argued to say that the Lying Figure can be from Alessa and her agony from being burned and the stuff that is squirts out is acidic pus and blood from the wounds that she suffers. Pyramid Head being there to punish the guilty ones who burned her. But it can be countered again by saying that new designs can be created and become homages to those monsters. I'm not very good at trying to explain my opinions, by I get by in any way I can. I'm not saying this review is wrong or anyone liking this movie is wrong, I'm just voicing my opinion and criticism of the movie. I respect the review and I respect the opinions of the liking of this movie. I'm sure that there are better people that can explain what I mean better than me lol.

This comment pretty much mirrors my mixed feelings about the film. I also agree with you about Harry being replaced and how Rose's character would have been excellent had they tweaked the script more and really made her her own, as opposed to a Harry-Heather Mason hybrib. Like you, I think an all female cast really could have worked in a stand alone adaptation of the games, brought it's own uniqueness and canon to the series, but it decided to cram as much as it could into its runtime. Changing Dahlia's character from ambitious, abusive cult leader to grief stricken mother hellbent on revenge was a brilliant change, imo, and it showed some of the untapped potential that they could have harness by creating a completely distinct story within the SH universe. I mentioned in another comment how the film suffers pacing issues, and that for me is it's biggest problem. There's just too much in this movie. Too many people, too many monsters, too much gore, too much action, too much exposition. Gans should have taken inspiration from some of the films that inspired the games (Jacob's Ladder, Angel Heart, The Shining and Twin Peaks) and allowed the viewer to linger in the atmosphere and ambience, as opposed to horrific scene after horrific scene broken up by exposition dumps to explain everything we just saw. That said, as far as videogame adaptations go, Gans' vision is definitely a stand-out amongst a sea of shit. The care he put into the aesthetic is worthy of praise- the film is visually very striking - I just wished the same care was given to the screenplay.

This movie scared the crap out of me when I first watched it. I was about 15 and watched it alone in the dark. I never played the game before I watched it.

Such a fantastic movie. Being a huge fan of the games i couldnt wait to see this when it came out, and i was very pleasantly surprised that it wasnt some cheesy movie clearly made just to capitalize on the game.

I would love to see a Dead Space movie, though I'm not sure if Hollywood could even make a good one... Considering that they fucked up DOOM twice, Hitman twice as well, and several times with Resident Evil

Fair review. The movie also sticked to my mind for quite a while without me being really able to figure out why. I overall appreciated the experience and the very clean production. I really recommend you guys to watch this Christophe Gans' interview. He is indeed a true lover of the serie and has a very interesting and enlightened perspective on what is Silent Hill. I enjoyed every second of his interview.

I also feel that game adaptation often starts with 2 handicaps: both from the defensive fanbase who wants to see the best out of the serie they love, and from the people who did not play it and feel like they cannot really connect with the production anyway. Adapting a video game into a movie is definitely a risky thing to do...
