Anyone else obsessed with the low-key mood and atmosphere of these these old horror flicks? Modern horror from the past 20 or so years have no clue how to replicate this, seems to be a lost art this century.

Yes! I love this and Messiah Of Evil and Let's Scare Jessica To Death, Symptoms, Burnt Offerings etc. Proper insidious mysterious creep vibe up on you! 70s rules horror-wize...Black Christmas, Don't Go In The House, Deathdream, The Wicker Man, The Shout, Shivers, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Brood, Blood On Satan's Claw, The Tennant, Don't Look Now etc. Even the blockbusters ruled like The Exorcist, Halloween, Carrie, Alien et al. Not to mention all the films made in Italy and the rest of Europe!

It's pleasurable to discover that there is someone else, who perceives this matter similarly as I do; almost all modern movies are overloaded with effects, vulgarity and gore, increasingly expensive and completely deprived of plot, not even mentioning such things as "atmosphere" or some art potential. I wasn't in cinema for years, and lately even ceased to watch TV; they chose some herd of troglodytes to be their target group, and only such kind of recipients they try to please.

They really don't make 'em like this anymore. A budget of just 295.000 dollars created a masterpiece. Not because of the effects (wich where more than fine), or Hollywood A-Listers (the actors here did a magnificent job). It's a damn good story where everything's fits and creates a fine work of art.

This was filmed on Oyster Bay Long Island. I lived about a half hour away in 1971 - and it was such a small production - no way would I gave heard about it. This was a staple movie on WOR channel 9's FRIGHT NIGHT in NY and NJ . This movie is a "horror stew" of psychological terror , grindhouse , pre-slasher movie , pre-Black Christmas FUN . That flashback to the insane asylum is inspired and wicked. This is a great movie to watch all by yourself late and night with nobody else home. (excepy a teddy bear or your pet). Yes, it has tatters , loose ends and budget restraints : but it really gets inside your head and creeps you out.

A very well made and creepy film which has haunted me since I saw it on late night TV when I was very young. This is absolutely the high point of Theodore Gershuny's career. I find these one hit wonders very interesting. They are able to marshall all their talent and resources to put together something exceptional, and then it does not happen again. Think of Herk Harvey with Carnival of Souls -- this one is almost as good as that.

_"A very well made and creepy film which has haunted me since I saw it on late night TV when I was very young."_ How young? I was born the same year this movie was originally released, 1972. I watched the beginning of it earlier this year (2021) but stopped right after the lawyer has the meeting with the mayor and the rest of the "town council" I guess you might call them. Now, having watched to the end a 30-year-old personal mystery has been solved! Chicago, IL, 1980 or 1981, I was about 9 or 10 years old, watching an old 9 inch black & white TV on a weekend afternoon. While switching channels on the UHF frequency, a very strange image appeared of what looked like a really old B&W movie. It looked like some kind of zombie horror movie, but I wasn't exactly sure because it was one of those moments where a station that isn't really available in that area is being picked up... The image was snowy, as in *_"My kingdom for a UHF antenna!"_* and the sound was nothing but buzzing. I watched as one of the "zombies" took a small, fluted glass, cracked it, and then took the sharp edges and gouged out the eye of a man sitting at a table... As he showed the bloodstained glass to the horde the frenzy began! The picture then became even more distorted and no amount of Egyptian poses on my part could make it clearer. When I saw clips from and read reviews about the 1932 film "Freaks" I thought "That must be what I saw...", which I found out after seeing that movie was incorrect. Eventually, I gave up ever figuring it out. 1:15:00 *ALL THESE YEARS...* P.S. SPOILER ALERT: Watch the movie *before* reading the comments! You are forever spoil-proof!
@DANIELMABUSE
@DANIELMABUSE 2 года назад
@@themirrorsofmymind So cool. I am considerably older than that, but also saw it on black and white TV on what was called "fright night" probably in 1974 or 1975, and, indeed, that scene with the wine glass stuck in my mind. My memory of it was a bit more gruesome than the film itself.

The leads in these sort of films are the kind of people I thought grown ups were when I was little. Sophisticated, slightly spooky, done up to the nines, interested in the world around them, confident and sure of themselves (well until they discover the horrors around them.) It turned out that real life grown ups are in fact, very much like children, but with enough money to buy the toys they've always wanted hehehe

This might possibly be the first American giallo movie ever made. The gothic vibes, flashback scenes that were masterfully staged to look like a silent movie (even the acting in them was clearly based on the silent film style of acting), phone calls with the killer whispering and the mystery surrounding the identity of the killer (even though they totally messed it up). Apart from the revelation of the killer's identity, I loved it all

Only a couple minor quibbles with the plotting. First, I wasn't aware criminally insane people were capable of moving silently as a coordinated group. Second, you leave you daughter alone "to get the car" AFTER letting a bunch of maniacs loose? *facepalm*
