This is a fascinating breakdown of the silence striders I really like how you address cultural issues that come with the territory of role-playing as one of them as well. It’s a very satisfying deep dive

You guys successfully covered all of my gripes with one of my all time favorite Tribes. I'm totally stealing your new take on their "curse" because I love that idea. I will disagree that being a messenger is useless in the modern day when you consider not all Garou use technology (Red Talons for one) so it still works, especially as harbingers of ill news. That being said I never wanted the messenger aspect to be the focus of the Tribe. I'll add to the Tribe of the dead aspect and tie it even closer to the point of the Tribes by drawing attention to the idea that maybe not all of the dead must be human. I think there's something to be said for avenging the dead animals, even those that went extinct. Granted they may not all exist in the Dark Umbra but I think handling the dead from whatever area of the Umbra still works.

Glad you like our head canon. Super love the idea of including non-human animals in with the idea. Amylin: Oh, I am so stealing that! Ryan: Plants too! Human ghosts feel like they need a tragic story, but I can see the ghost of an 800 year old tree having some downright wholesome agenda. "Back in my fledgeling state there was a migratory bird that nested on me for a season. I typically don't care for things that climb about me, but I liked that bird. Could you seek it or its offspring and let it know I appreciated their friendship?"

Werewolf tends to take a certain period in a geographical region's history and stretch it out to flavor the tribe as a whole. The Get are firmly in the Scandinavia iron age of pillaging prior to mass conversions. The Fianna are even more glaring considering they are basically just Irish werewolves when the Celts were a whole empire before Rome. Now, the none Gaelic Celts aspects are mentioned in passing but are never expanded upon . Thus, the same method of locking in a specific time and location to blanket a tribe's whole flavor was also given to Silent Striders. They are based on a period of Egypt that had mainly Middle Eastern and specifically Mesopotamian influences. White Wolf gives us this anchoring point for the tribe's identity a then we can as people who know real world history can expand from there. I've played games where the Get had lost caerns and scattered kinfolk in Iberia and parts of Italy because of the Normans.

Love the idea of death-wolf relationships the silent striders have. Makes me want to play one.

I don't remember the book where I read this, but one of them mentions an alternative to Set's curse. Basically, the Striders made an oath that they would never rest until they had driven out the vampires from their land, but they overestimated their own prowess and lost. (How very Garou) and ended up cursing themselves. I see the Striders as originally being the Tribe of death, dealing with ghosts and ancestor spirits. They are messengers but not like the Corax, they simply took that role later, after they were banished from Egypt. They are cursed to wander, so might as well make something out of it. The connection with Egypt is simply because it's the last home they knew; they wouldn't be so attached to it if they could still go there, but they can't. The last home they had was ancient Egypt, so they idolize it. As for being the 'lone wolf' Tribe... what's wrong with that? I think it's a good thing that the option exists. I think it's neat that they have a completely different relationship with their families and kinfolk than every other Tribe. There's nothing wrong with solo games, just the ST and one player, the Striders are great for that. They also work well for when you have a new player or someone who's just visiting and wants to play one session, they can drop in, have fun, then the character leaves. They can also be part of a more permanent Pack if the players are always moving around, as opposed to mainly staying in one place. They very much have a place in the game as they are, even if they don't fit in every game (no Tribe does).

while you do have a point about the culture aspect of this tribe, Egypt is not /just/ African. It is also Arabian and Medditeranean both in location, historical ecconomics, and even politics it didnt have much to do with Africa other than Punt to their south. Then there is the tradition of gypsy culture steming from Khem and Hebrew culture to an extent. Dont just look at it from a modern perspective.

I think an interesting way to handle the Setite curse would be to incorporate it with their concept of helping others cope with the world. They were cursed by Set but instead of letting it get them down, they used it as an opportunity to understand loss and humiliation and to grow and heal from it. They would be the chief opponents of nihilistic pessimism using their pain as an example of how others can deal with theirs, Losing their home was a lesson in that "Even without a home the tribe will endure, they may strip you of your ancestral ground but they can never strip the tribe of themselves." They may prefer being loners and drifters but they still provide a vital role in the Garou Nation as a beacon of keeping hope in utter hopelessnes.
