Vocals and guitar ...John Whitehead
The song "Silent Worship" is a 1928 adaptation by Arthur Somervell of the aria "Non lo dirò col labbro" from Handel's 1728 opera Tolomeo (Ptolemy)
A big thank you to The Salt-Burners for suggesting I sing this song.
.Lyrics:
Did you not hear My Lady
Go down the garden singing
Blackbird and thrush were silent
To hear the alleys ringing…
Oh saw you not My Lady
Out in the garden there
Shaming the rose and lily
For she is twice as fair.
Though I am nothing to her
Though she must rarely look at me
Though I could never woo her
I love her till I die.
Surely you heard My Lady
Go down the garden singing
Silencing all the songbirds
And setting the alleys ringing…
But surely you see My Lady
Out in the garden there
Rivaling the glittering sunshine
With a glory of golden hair.

Hello John Just listened to ‘Silent Worship’ ,a lovely version, with a real feel for that time. o and thanks for the mention.I know that you like beautiful melody. I’ve just Listenened to a glorious piece of music(Ciaccona in A Major-j H schmelzer) Violinist Helen Schmitt. I can imagine Maggie and I doing a gavotte to this. Best wishes to you both. Thank you for listening Alan. As I thought. it finished up somewhere between the folky and the stiffly formal version. I've just listened to the Ciacccona and it is certainly glorious and I was thinking how wonderful it would have been if my song had been accompanied by music like that instead of my clumsy guitar. I have been listening to Natalie Merchant's Motherland and thought I like to have a go at it. I've made a start but am not sure it's going to turn out well for my type of voice. I was thinking that Maggie would make a pretty good job of it Best wishes to you and Maggie

hello again John. Just to . say that your playing is exactly the opposite to clumsy. how very fortunate we were to stumble upon your ‘O so melodic channel’ I’ve just listened to Natalie Merchant -what a great voice(reminded me of a much sweeter Tracy Chapman). when I get home I’ll certainly get maggie to Listen to her. good luck with this new song One Saltburner

hi John , so glad you both liked Lullaby(Mozart ‘Wiegenlied), it is very beautiful. have you ever listened to Dermot Troy’s version of ‘Stilly Night?)- very trained Voice, old fashioned sound, and understated piano-but superb voice and glorious high notes.( he died so young) Now you are feeling better , we look forward to future lovely songs from you. the Salt- Burners

I looked for Dermot Troy's version of "Oft in the Stilly Night" but couldn't find it on RU-vid. Regards ~John~

Thank you Alan. I found the song. Yes, an excellent voice but I think I prefer John McDermott's more homely version. I find Dermot Troy's exaggerated diction rather inappropriate for the song. ~John~

Another glitch - I sang ‘ Salley Garden’ and between verses I put in A E Housemans ‘ poem When I was one and Twenty’ . I was surprised that they liked it. I’ve found three songs that may be of use to you. two of them by a favourite Of mine Brendan O’Dowda. ( Lullaby and The Loch Tay Boat Song ) and the other is The Connemara Lullaby (. Johnny McEvoy -Steeleye Span ) and many others. I notice that one of your favourites is John McDermott - yes, like you , he has A lovely warm voice. Take care John and Yuriko. the Salt - Burners

I've been out of action for two weeks with a bad cold so I've not progressed at all, Alan. I've just had a go at it but I'm still croaking. It is pretty difficult anyway and finding a suitable guitar accompaniment is going to prove problematical. Glad to hear that you sang last week and I look forward to hearing your efforts on RU-vid!! I hope you had a nice trip. Best wishes to you both ~John~

Hello again ! I've had a listen to the songs you suggested and Yuriko loves Lullaby so I'll have a go at it when I have learned and recorded Motherland (Natalie Merchant). She knew the song as it was sung in the ITV version of Jane Austen's Emma. I also like the Connemara Lullaby and may have a go at that too. The Boat song is good but I don't think it's quite my style. Thanks so much for your suggestions.....I really appreciate the trouble you have gone to. Yes, John McDermot has a lovely voice. I like him when he sings alone and without too much orchestration.
