This lighting technique is commonly used for film noir lighting and interview setups where the subject wants to remain anonymous.
It is a fantastic cinematic lighting technique that can quickly add mystery and drama to the right scene. Silhouette lighting in film is recently found a resurgence of use in modern action and dance sequences in films such as Skyfall, The Book of Eli and La La Land.
