Silicone molds can be made using lots of different strategies. in this video I explore 3 kinds of molds: open back molds, one-piece cut molds and rotation molds.
After the molds are made I use colored urethane resin to cast copies of the molded parts
----------------------
Would you like to mold and cast something but have no idea how to start? Send pics of your project to me and maybe I’ll do it as a RU-vid video.

I had a mild curiosity as to what it would require to even make a mold. And this video did NOT disappoint!! Fascinating process, excellent descriptions of the processes and the reasons for each. I'm just in awe, it looks like so much fun!! I don't doubt there's an incredible amount of experience that's required to do this correctly like this professional, but consider me inspired!! Thank you for sharing your expertise and satiating my desire to explore mold making (sorry if that's the wrong term, I'm new lol) great content! Thanks again 😊

I learned a neat trick for estimating amount of pour needed. After you set it up, before you mix your pour, fill with rice. Then pour rice into measuring cup to give you a fairly accurate measure of what you need. Works with me, but I add just a little more for good luck.

Ive been binge watching your whole channel recently and something occurred to me. Your use of plastic cups is brilliant because they're cheap, disposable, and low effort. But any time you need a box container, it suddenly involves a lot of work, effort, and materials. So I wondered if there was an equivalent to your cups for arbitrary sized boxes and the idea of vacuforming came to mind. Might be a quick, cheap, and easy way to quickly make your own "disposable" plastic boxes for castings. Just an idea

Robert, My first time viewing your video, by far the best instructions/videos after 15 months of researching. I've loved crafting all my life. My grandparents raised me. They were poor but rich in love, I was truly blessed 😃. My grandmother taught me how to inexpensively craft. Amazing what you can make out of nothing. Salt dough ornaments were one of my favorites as a child I later taught to many classes. What product would you recommend for resin molds that would be the best for repeated use along with expense. Thank you so much :) I am now off to watch more of your videos :)
@RobertTolone
@RobertTolone 3 года назад
Dewey McQueen The cost is the biggest obstacle to resin casting in silicone molds. The materials are expensive and I’ve never found low-cost versions. Resin wears the molds out so they have a relatively short life. And it’s very useful to have pressure and vacuum equipment to deal with removing the air. Unfortunately it’s an expensive hobby. I Wish I had a better answer for you. Thanks so much for watching my videos!

I write the resin quantity and other filler / info on a slip of paper then paste it to the mold with clear silicone. I also coat over the paper with clear silicone to make the tag more durable. I think of a vents as basically just being chimneys. As the resin fills the mold it rises and the air gets pushed above it to the top. Any place the shape of the mold will trap air you put a vent there.

I thought at the beginning you were doing this as a hobby, I was amazed when you said you did it for a living. I don’t know how to make these RU-vid videos but will ask the children when I see them next. I don’t even know how to post photos but I’ve rotationally cast pieces 1metre tall, ship figureheads, reproduction ivories to fool dealers, pieces for museums and artists. You’re wasting so much rubber and having to cut molds. I can’t believe that. I stopped years ago but I think it’s worth a little comeback. I’ll get the children to show me how to make videos and post them, maybe I can teach you how it’s really done. I’m not trying to be rude but you’ve learned this through trial and error.

I have a tip for the rotational casting. You will find that the mould deteriorates quite quickly compared to open moulds. This is because the heat and styrene generated are not allowed to escape in the hardening process. Once a fortnight we would pour in some silicone thinned down to a watery consistency with white spirit and leave it rotating for a few hours this will be absorbed by the dry parts and give you hopefully three times the life of a mould. Before use empty it and cast a plaster piece to help dry it up. Hope it helps.

Hi there, 1st time viewing & I just subscribed & I’m sooooooo glad I came across your channel. This was seriously extremely educational, your teaching technique is absolutely awesome & very easy to follow, I’ve just started using resin myself & one of my mates who is a chef dropped one of his knifes & the handle broke & he asked if I could have an attempt at fixing it with resin & I said I’ll give it a go, I’m thinking I’ll have to make a silicone mold 1st. I’ll tell you what big brother must be watching because I didn’t even search for mold making & boom your video popped up. I’m so so soooooo thankful that you made this video, you have definitely set me in the right direction & I feel a bit more confident in having a go at making a mold & possible fixing my mates knife. Now that I’ve found your channel & subscribed I look forward to watching more of your videos & learning a lot more. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge & skills 👍👍
