This video is fantastic - also, you are hilarious! Love this content! My question is this: I live in NYC in a small apartment and I am trying to steam set a 20” x 20” square scarf - is it possible, once you have wrapped the scarf in paper, to fold the wrapped paper/silk so I could have it fit in a tall soup pot? I just don’t think I have the room or money to create that steam cooker machine. Hehe. Bravo and thanks!

Oh of course! Thanks for your compliment! Glad you’re enjoying it! Go to Jacquard products website and search for steam setting dyes. They have a great how-to on their website for steaming in a pot. Also, I’m finishing up a beginner’s silk painting course that will launch on my website soon, and I do steam in a pot in that series! Hi! Wonderful video - I am new to silk dying but I do have a piece that someone has asked me to make so I'm jumping in - and love the process so far! My question, I hope you can answer is: Can I use brown, recycled craft paper instead of that white kind you use to roll your paintings in? The craft paper available to me has little brown "pin stripes" on it. Thanks again for sharing your techniques! I look forward to watching more of your videos :)

I suggest using the paper on something you have that’s 100% cotton first to insure the lines in the paper don’t give off any marks. You cannot be too careful! It will likely be just fine.

Do you add the wrapped silk to the steamer when you first start it or dies the water in it need to be pre-heated?

I never preheat. No reason to do that! But I don’t start timing my steam until the water is boiling.

do you need to top up the water in the rice cooker

Yes! You sure do! I use a pitcher to pour water down the middle of the opening at the top. I can tell by picking up the cooker and sloshing it back and forth about how much water is in it. Since I’m steaming nearly daily, the water is constantly being freshened and cycled through! I change my pipe about every 18 mos as it will rust on the inside over time.

Silly me. I meant do you need to top the water up while you are steaming to prevent it running dry. I bought a large horizontal steaming which I havent used. But love your idea of the rice cooker as I have one in my cupboard which I never use.

@@MsHeebiejeebies No! I never need to top off the water DURING a steam, and I’ve steamed as long as 5 hours for a very large piece of yardage!

Yeah, I know it. This was a Facebook Live recording, which is extremely low quality. Nothing I can do to make it better, so I’ve considered deleting it. It’s been a popular video. Eventually, I will remake it.
