I came to look at how silk was painted with dyes, but I learned so much more !! This is a top rate video. You told the important things to do, and to avoid, but didn't just prattle on about things that would have been a waste of time. You are a remarkable teacher, and a wonderful artist, and you have my sincere thanks. Well done !! xoxo

I really enjoyed the information you taught us all here. I've been considering taking my photography of our western ranching lifestyle and incorporating it into this sort of thing. I'm not sure how I am going to do it. But since we all wear silk wild rags in our work and dressing up (men & women both), it popped into my head that this can be done. I am training in my fine print making myself (inkjet only as of now), but I see the possibilities. I joined your FB group. Thank you so much for the shared info here and the inspiration you have given me!

I am considering buying a steamer. You mentioned that you have both a vertical steamer and the stovetop as seen in the video. Please compare the two more thoroughly. I was surprised that you praised the stovetop model over the other. Since I have a gas stove in my kitchen, I would have to buy some kind of burner. What do you recommend? Thank you for any advice.
@BeginnersMind-ArtMind
@BeginnersMind-ArtMind 2 года назад
It’s really a personal choice. Many people love the vertical steamer. I just happen to like the horizontal one. I had more steaming issues/damaged scarves with the vertical. Never had issues with the horizontal one. The horizontal one heats more quickly and steams faster in my experience. The vertical can take larger scarves and larger rolls.

I know this is an old video but just in case anyone else needs info on this, you can wrap up a single piece as in this video, then curl it snail style into a cooking steamer basket and steam just as you would potatoes. Some people like to wrap the lid with a cloth to prevent drips , tho if you wrap properly that shouldn’t be an issue.

Thanks for the video, it’s really helpful. I’ve just bought an upright steamer. The problem is that I have a collection of hand painted silk scarves that are waiting to be steamed and they’re all creased up! From watching your clip I see that they should not be rolled with creases. I don’t want to iron them before steaming as I’ve been told this will affect the silk detrimentally. Is there a way of removing creases without ironing that you recommend? I’d be grateful to have your advice. Jane
@BeginnersMind-ArtMind
@BeginnersMind-ArtMind 3 года назад
Sorry Jane, I really don't know the answer to that as I have never allowed mine to get wrinkles in them. You might try ironing one with a very dry iron, make sure there's no water at all in it, and see if that works.
@janeryan882
@janeryan882 3 года назад
Well thanks very much for replying so quickly. I might try just hanging them up to see whether the creases fall out naturally.
@BeginnersMind-ArtMind
@BeginnersMind-ArtMind 3 года назад
You're very welcome! I don't think the creases will fall out naturally, at least not from what I have experienced with silk. I'm having a hard time imagining why a completely dry iron would affect the dye. I used Dupont dyes and a type of resist that can be heat set with an iron or by steaming. So sometimes I have added layers of resist over layers of dye and iron the silk before steaming and I have never noticed a problem. Maybe it depends on what kind of dye your using?
@janeryan882

Linda Marcille Fine Art, Crow House Studio Thanks again Linda, so great to find someone who can help! I did a short course on silk painting and the tutor recommended using Dupont steam fixed dyes , which I have. He also said that after painting, the fabric should not be pressed before steaming because it causes the fibres to clog ( or something along those lines) but I’m tending to think a light press won’t hurt.

@BeginnersMind-ArtMind 5 лет назад
Hi Ginnie, I don't have any experience with Procion dyes so I am guessing that is what is causing your issue. The French steam set dyes like Dupont, Jacquard and even some of the heat set silk paints work beautifully with salt. Hope that helps.

I think if she is using procion dyes she needs to put soda ash with it. When doing the scarfs I only use Dupont dyes and then I steam mine and I also use guttate as a resist. Procion dyes only to be used with soda ash an urea to keep from fading works very well then use in cold water without steaming. Wash In gentle with syntbropal soap hand wash hang to dry then light iron.

@BeginnersMind-ArtMind
@BeginnersMind-ArtMind 6 лет назад
Hi Tatiana, If you are getting bleeding at the edges while you are steaming your scarves then it seems to me that somehow moisture is getting into the end of your roll in the steamer. I highly recommend joining the Silk Painters International (SPIN) group on Facebook. There is a plethora of information about silk painting there.

@BeginnersMind-ArtMind

That happens when there is a lot of dye in the rolled hem and the body of the scarf dries before the hem does. They dye leaches out of the hem and causes the watermark. One way to avoid that is to put a line of resist around the outer edge of your scarf and paint it a different color like a frame. If you don't want to do that then just try to apply the dye more sparingly near the hem so it is not so much wetter than the rest of the scarf.

If you steamed at 212 degrees for 2-3 hours (depending on the size of the roll) Yes you can wash it. Some surface dye may wash off at first but then the water will come clear. If you run into trouble add a splash of Jacquard Dye set to the water to aid in setting the dye.

thanks linda! hope you had a nice vacation :) just to clarify - is it the brown kraft paper you’re using? did you find that to work better than blank newsprint? it certainly looks easier than layering a bunch of smaller pages as i’ve had to do with the newsprint. i find it difficult to avoid wrinkles because it’s hard to keep all the layers aligned when rolling up the silk package. thanks again for your input! i’ve watched your video about a dozen times now! 😍

Yes it is the rolls of brown paper used to back framed art. I never used the news print for the exact reasons you listed. The brown paper is very easy to keep lined up and doesn't wrinkle. You just don't want to roll up your bundle extremely tight, let it have a little breathing room. I also reuse the sheets of paper to steam the next batch.

No, I'm sorry I do not know how to make gutta. I don't use gutta, I use a water-based resist called Resistad available from Dharma Trading.
