A song written in 1939 when the Winter war started.
Lyrics:
Finnish:
Kotikontujen tienoita tervehtien
tämä laulumme kaikukoon,
yli peltojen, vetten ja tunturien
aina Hangosta Petsamoon.
|: Sama kaiku on askelten,
kyllä vaistomme tuntee sen,
kuinka kumpujen kätköistä, mullasta maan
isät katsovat poikiaan. :|
Sinä tiedäthän veikko mun vierelläin,
mikä retkemme tänne toi.
Ilomielin me riensimme sinnepäin,
mistä yhteinen kutsu soi.
|: Tapa tuttu jo taattojen
nyt on hoidossa poikasten:
Kun on vaaralle alttiina syntymämaa
kotiaskareet jäädä saa. :|
Mitä lieneekin aarteita Suomessa,
toki kallein on vapaus.
Tääl on suorana seistä ja kaatua
joka miehellä oikeus.
|: Siis te lapset ja vanhukset,
ja te äidit ja morsiamet,
niin kauan teillä on suojattu lies
kun on pystyssä ykskin mies. :|
English:
Saluting the home neighbourhood,
let this song echo forth,
over fields, lakes and fells
all the way from Hanko to Petsamo.
|: Our steps have the same echo,
our instinct feels it,
as our forefathers gaze their sons,
from below the earth and the hills. :|
Dear lad on my side,
surely you what brought us here.
Gladly we rushed there,
where the common calling rang.
|: A way known by grandfathers,
is now the way of their descendants,
when threatened is our fatherland,
home chores will have to leave behind. :|
What treasures there is in Finland,
freedom is the most valuable.
Every man here has
the right to fall or fight.
|: So hear you children and seniors,
you mothers brides also,
as long as there is a man standing,
you shall have a guarded home. :|

The words of this song were made by F.E. Sillanpää in his poem in October 1939. They organised quickly a competition to get the best possbile melody fitting to these words. The allowed time was one week. Still more than 100 composers sent their melodies to the Finnish Radio. Aimo Mustonen, who was a pretty unknown person, won this competition. This song had such a positive effect to the Finnish fighting moral, that the HQ of the Finnish army figured it would equal one extra division, about 15000 men.

Funny how the history re-writing gets the less educated. Mannerheim was not Finnish, he hardly spoke Finnish, and he loathed the Finnish. He was a German nobleman, educated in Russia. It was only by chance that he became the leader of the Finnish armed forces.

Got Sisu? Take note how Finns fought for their freedoms and culture when faced with tyranny and oppression. They didn't flee to the west expecting/demanding welfare and handouts like the freeloaders of our era that are coming from the Middle East and Africa.
@rusty6789
@rusty6789 4 года назад
I mean as a Finn, most children, mothers, elderly and other incapable of combat fleed to our neighboring country Sweden, who generously took them in, and my Grandmother was actually a war immigrant to Sweden when she was a child. So don't spout bullshit about "Sisu" if youre gonna talk shit about the downtrodden. Sisu is quiet strength, you don't preach about it.
@Sturmavk

Rusty and what of the fighting age men that manned the Mannerheim Line? That later fought in the Continuation War against the Soviets? What of the of fighting age men of today that are flooding Europe from Africa and the Middle East? You bring the bullshit and make excuses for today’s spineless freeloaders. According to your rules one should never remind others of the fighting spirit of the Finns of that period that stood against the Soviets against all odds. That’s what’s total and complete bullshit.

@@molotovribbentrop2839 Which ones are not from a warzone? Kurds, Syrians, Somalis etc. are all from either war zones or otherwise impoverished countries. Hailing our home, our native land, Let this song be heard far and wide. Over fields, waters, fjells and more; From Hanko to Petsamo! :: The same drumbeat of our march Our instinct does this thing know: From the depths of graves, From the Earth, from the ground, Our Fathers look up on their sons. :: [I should translate the other verses, but I'm quite drunk, And I feel I have done my share for the day. Have fun :) ] [Edit: ok, I'm back with translations of the second, third and fourth verses] You know this, brother beside my march, what's the calling that brought us here; with great joy we hurry towards that call which is common and shared by all What treasures there may be in Finland, most precious is liberty. In here not bow but to stand and fall Is the right of every man. So you children and elders of ours, And our mothers, our brides and wives; As long as there is still blood in us Your homes shall be safe and free.
