I’m often asked what liquid I use to blacken my silver, copper, bronze rings. Everything is very simple, I use liver of sulfur, which I make myself from soda and sulfur. In this video I want to show how I do it.
There are many ready-made liquids for blackening silver and also ready-made liver of sulfur. You can buy all this in online or offline stores. And I highly recommend buying it, rather than doing it yourself. Because it is a very toxic process and this is just a hellish stink!
But if you still want to do it yourself, then please be careful, use a respirator or gas mask, do it under a hood, or do it outdoors. Also observe fire safety.
To make sulfuric liver we need Soda ash (Na2CO3) or Baking soda (NaHCO₃) and sulfur. It’s good if you can find pure sulfur. But if not, then you can buy it at a pet store as a food supplement. That all makes sense if you able to buy cheap sulfur. I use sulfur for pets and in my country it costs only a few cents and is available at any pet store. Otherwise, it is better to use ready-made liver of sulfur (powder or gel).
How to make sulfuric liver (liver of sulphur, liver of sulfur):
Step 1 (1:54)
If you don’t have Soda Ash (Na2CO3) this can be obtained simply by heating baking soda (NaHCO₃).
Baking Soda + heating = Soda Ash (calcined soda). If you have Soda Ash, skip Step 1 and proceed to the next step.
Step 2 (2:10)
Mix soda and sulfur in a ratio of 1: 1 (approximately)
Step 3
Heat on fire. Be careful! This is a very toxic process accompanied by a hellish stink! Do this under a range hood or outdoors. Protect yourself with a respirator or gas mask. In the process of heating, this composition lights up with fire. Some people recommend that fire should not be allowed. But I do with fire, as it is faster and the result is the same. Be careful not to get burns from spray when immersed in water.
The sulfuric liver solution is stored only a few days. Therefore, periodically you need to make a fresh sulfuric liver solution.
