THANKS again for posting this. My best friend just ran me off a DVD-R from this RU-vid video, and I enjoyed it even more than I did sitting in front of my computer screen. There was only one very odd, unexpected thing about it. With my widescreen TV, I usually either watch things in "NORMAL" mode (for old TV shows and movies / "fullscreen") or "ZOOM" (widescreen TV shows & movies / "letterbox"). This one, I had to watch in "STRETCH" mode-- halfway between. In several years of using this TV, I've never run across anything I had to do that with before. (I wonder how that happened?) I really wish someone would do an "official" release of this. To me, the best thing would be if they included it as an "extra" on a disc with "MURDER BY DECREE". Then we'd have both Christopher Plummer HOLMES films on the same disc! I now have 3 of Thorley Walters' appearances as Dr. Watson on disc. All I need now is the Gene Wilder movie...
First time to see Christopher Plummer as Sherlock Holmes. I could not find the full movie Murder by Decree. Thanks for uploading this short. RiP, Mr. Brilliant Actor.
I read about this film decades ago, and only just now finally got to see it. It was WONDERFUL! The Jeremy Brett version was a bit padded out. The Arthur Wontner version was only a smal part of a bigger movie. This was as close to PERFECTION as I could imagine. Thorley Walters made a TERRIFIC Watson. It's downright criminal that "THE DEADLY NECKLACE" had Christoper Lee & Thorley Walters dubbed into English by OTHER actors. There's just no excuse for that sort of thing. Also, I feel when Douglas Wilmer and Walters were briefly in "THE ADVENTURE OF SHERLOCK HOLMES' SMARTER BROTHER", they totally stole that movie. (Since getting the 1965 TV series box set, Wilmer has become one of my TOP favorite Holmes.) When I first saw "MURDER BY DECREE" in a theatre, Christopher Plummer struck me as one of the most "human" Holmes I'd ever seen. Here, he actually reminds me of 2 other favorites of mine-- Ronald Howard and Ian Richardson, both of whom exhibited great enthusiasm and joy at their work. As I watched Holmes' mind spinning, figuring out the mystery, coercing the rival stable manager, and deciding not to explain anything until after the race, I was laughing half the way. This may be the best version of this I've seen, and if it hasn't been, someone REALLY ought to do a proper DVD release from a decent source material.
Christopher Plummer (Holmes) from Murder by Decree and Thorley Walters (Watson) from The Deadly Necklace! That's really funny to see them play together! 😄
