Welcome to Wonderhussy Adventure #358
Lithium is the new silver! With lithium-ion batteries in all our rechargeable gadgets and an increasing number of our cars, the VERY remote, historic mining town of Silver Peak, Nevada is once again booming -- sort of. As home to the only lithium mine is the U.S., this busted little semi-ghost town is right at the center of all the action -- but things haven't changed much, from the look of it. There's still plenty of weathered old buildings, wild horses...and natural hot springs...all in the middle of one of the most surreal landscapes I've ever explored!!

Hello. My name is Jodi. I was raised in Silver Peak from kindergarten through high school. Seeing your video got me so excited. You are standing in front of my old house during a portion of the video. Growing up in Silver Peak was awesome. We had 4 wheelers and us kids grew up being close friends. We are all grown up now and no longer live there. I can see in your video it has changed quite a bit. I love all of your videos.

Do you have any old photos of Silver Peak? I am the library director here and I am trying to get photos of Silver Peak from any time anyone has to make a timeline around the library.

Honestly was happy to see videos of Silverpeak and be able to show people the town I grew up in. However, I didn’t appreciate some of the comments that you made! It was amazing growing up in Silverpeak and the amount of freedom and activity you have as a kid is quite amazing. We often got lots of comments from visitors about how much they loved the sky and the nature. I live in Texas now and always talk about how I wish I had the freedom to go shooting in the desert, go dip in the hot ponds and stare at the Milky Way, run my dogs in the mountains and even ride quads through the desert canyons. The school was open, but is now shut down. You get plenty of socialization because the entire county would meet to form a basketball team to compete against other schools, and we would have a district wide track meet every year. Plus, once you reached high school grades you went to Tonopah. One thing I’d like to stress, is that with the increase of social media the locals ask you leave things as they were (or a little nicer) and be considerate. Those hot ponds are not public land, and I believe there is still a no trespassing sign there. However most importantly, if you come to visit our small town.. please don’t be upset when locals come to the hot ponds, or a “popular” area and play loud music, have a fire, party or what not. We’ve been living there for years and like to enjoy it! (I only say this because it seems most like to camp out next to the hot spring but when the high school kids come out in the middle of the night and play loud music and party at the hot ponds the campers like to get upset.)

Hi Sarah (?), just subscribed to your channel. I was so interested in seeing your video on Silver Peak and the lithium mine. I was a field engineer out of AZ and would go their at least once a year for many years. I serviced their lab equipment which was in that building you described as the mine headquarters, which it was. They were really nice people and most lived in company provided trailers Monday through Friday but went home for the weekends, most lived in Bishop, CA. Keep up the great adventures, enjoy them so much !!! Loved the Alien Inn and Tonopah, home of the Muckers !!! 👍👍👍

The Old School bar was also known as Stubby's, and the Vinegaroon. Now there were some fights there. The other bar/restaurant that was closed was The Miner's Inn. It was a less rowdy place. We had a lot of fun in Silver Peak. The gas station disappeared when the old guy who owned it passed. The Motel was ok. It used to be busy. Anyway good memories

That school was open until last year. They started taking the kids to Goldfield because the population dropped too much.. My daughter graduated from Kindergarten and 8th grade from the school in 2012 and 2020. She will be graduating from the Esmeralda County Virtual High School (with honors) in 2024. For the most part I think most kids would say they loved growing up here. Sometimes they may have got a little lonely, but for the most part they all grew up together and were like a big family. We all still keep in close contact. I am the Library Director in Silver Peak and was always that house that all the kids came to and we were (and still are) very close. The kids had the freedom to play outside without us having to worry that someone would come and take them, they had the wide open desert, sand dunes, hot ponds, BBQ's, and parties around the fire pits. There is a public swimming pool as well as one at my house. We all had a good time together and I wouldn't trade these memories for anything else in the world.

Yeh, They extract the powder out of a mine like they do in Chile, It is a extremely caustic chemical. They pump water into the well and pump it out the lithium is extracted and put into pools they set for several months to conentrate it. It contaminates all the ground waters. Just search lithium mining in chile.

@@BadBrad23 Lithium metal is like Sodum and Potassium. It has to be stored in oil, and is flammable when exposed to air.

Wow, You covered a lot of territory with this video. Loved the wild horses, antelopes and Burros. That town is a time machine. Back home there was a Titanium mine. They pumped water into the sandy soil, made a big pond , then filtered the water through a refining system and extracted the Titanium, which is used to make Titanium white paint. The cleaned sand was pumped back and the Amoeba like pond moved on. Thanks Mucho, Rik Spector

Oh I did the drive from my lush, greencountry section of Oklahoma, went thru NM, AZ & up to Reno, Tahoe, Virginia City & back. I was so sick of the desert & my poor dogs didn't know where to potty, due to no grass growing. However, staring down all those desert dirt roads got my imagination going...in a bad movie kind of way. I never had any clue we were driving past tons & tons of free hot springs until I found your channel. Now I'm watching all your videos planning myself a road trip back out there again only this time to visit all the hot springs that I can.

Problem is is that because it is so remote the price would be close to double what it usually is closer in to the cities. I remember stopping at an old gas station even for 1970 and gas was 55 cents a gallon when it was about 27 cents at the time.
