Silver Soldered Boiler for 16mm Live Steam Locomotive

This boiler is small but the same techniques are used on all sizes of copper boiler.
My top tip for for silver soldering is use a large enough burner to get the metal hot enough. Prolonged heating will burn away the flux before the solder is applied.
The model is Wild Rose designed by Dave Watkins.

Great to see how you've adopted 3D printing as an aid to make various tools that are helpful in making items using more traditional techniques. You've inspired me to go and do the same for a stirling engine I'm making. It requires a precisely tuned shaft, I think printing a prototype of that first will allow me to tune it properly before replicating it in brass. Thanks!

For pickling the boiler, go to your local pool shop and pick up a ton of PH- and make a saturated solution. It works amazingly and you can dunk your hands in it with only a little mild stinging on any cuts already on your hands, very efficient at cleaning the copper and very easy on your hands and lungs, cleans the copper in only a few minutes

Yes. I believe the stuff you are talking about is sodium bisulphate. It's a Ph buffer. I use it for silver jewellery work. Desert spoon in a pint of water. Heat it up in an old electric crock pot. Works well and a small bucket of the stuff will last about six trillion years... Give or take. Martin Kyle over at model-engineer.co.uk explains that the dissassociative effect of Sodium bisulphate when added to water produces positive sodium ions, positive hydrogen ions and SO4 which acts as a mild solution of sulphuric acid but as sulphuric acid seems to be getting hard to get over there in the UK, sodium bisulphate might be a reasonable alternative.

You need more of a pin point flame, something like a size 12 welding tip so you can direct where you want the heat instead of just heating the whole thing up. You shouldn’t need flux for copper to copper if you clean it with emery beforehand either. Love your videos mate 👍🏻
@myfordboy
@myfordboy 3 года назад
You would never make a model boiler like that. Flux is essential and a large torch is needed to heat the copper. local heating is no good.
@jordankerr1377
@jordankerr1377 3 года назад
@@myfordboy definitely not essential for copper to copper. With a finer welding tip you can put much more heat into a smaller more workable area rather having the whole thing heat up over a longer period of time, which also burns most of your flux off anyway.

Beating copper over a former is easier than it looks. The main thing is the annealing. Freshly annealed copper is a joy to work. As you work it, it will harden up a bit, but just anneal it again then carry on. From what I’ve seen, metal spinning looks easy when done by an expert but there’s a lot of danger there!

Forgive my ignorance but what material are the blanking plugs used for screwing into the bushes to assist holding them in place during silver soldering. I am always nervous the plugs would be soldered to the bushes so i have used rusty steel and i believe I read carbon dust from leaded pencil brushed onto the thread also works.
@myfordboy
@myfordboy 4 года назад
The plus were brass. The solder would be away from them so no danger of soldering in place. I do have a collection of rusty screws and fittings I use on other assemblies. If I want to stop solder flowing I use typist correction fluid, i.e. Tipex as a resist.

A couple of questions, if you have time sir. The 3D printed former ... How did you print it, 100% infill something less. Just thinking of it taking the beating of forming the copper. The second, is the inline check or one way valve in your boiler test rig? Can you explain it? is this a purchased item or did you make it? Also, I am amazed that the hand sprayer bottle would pump that high of a pressure. Thanks for sharing. Joe

Don’t be fooled by just looking at quoted temperatures. You need a lot of heat to get that mass of copper up to temperature. Mini torches can be handy for little fiddly things but a lot of copper is a big heat sink. Also, but often overlooked, is a hearth that contains that heat.
