More like he made it sound like real electronic music, because in most cases, the NES soundchip is better than the Genesis. But even Tim Follin made the Genesis sound not like the Genesis in the only game he did that wasn't even released, Time Trax.
Tim and Geoff Follin both seemed to really know how to work the "rapid arpeggios" and various other effects that noone else could've ever figured out before the NES was rendered obsolete. I'd like to hear something of theirs reworked with the "Sunsoft Bass". Now THAT would be something of Epic Proportions! I don't think anything could contain that level of awesome!!!
World Theme 1 is one of the only truly mind melting NES soundtracks if you ask me. I wish I was around to see the faces of the Follin Brothers when making this piece.
Who of us hoped for a Tim Follin return? Finally it is! After so many years of silence Tim Follin launched a Kickstarter campaign for a videogame and a cd with new/rearranged masterpieces only a talent like him can make! If we like Tim Follin we have no excuse being *active* and pledge some money for his *value* work. Go to Kickstarter web site and search for 'Contradiction Tim Follin'.
Yes indeed! Even if its something I would have never seen coming, or entirely like that much. But still, this is Tim Follin, still gotta show my love for him and what he has done. At least he is doing music again! :P
I agree every single statement! And who can't pledge some money can still be *very* *very* helpful by bombarding Facebook pages, videogames web sites, forums etc. asking space for the return of the legend Tim Follin!
I am a former electronic music developer. The technical complexitiy of this soundtrack must have been a challenge to artistically separate the channels to stereo as you did here. Great job !
It's too bad this soundtrack couldn't have been used on a better game. While Silver Surfer isn't the worst game ever made or anything, it's overly difficult and extremely unforgiving. If they had added a life bar and gave you some kind of chance, then the difficulty would have been evened out and the game wouldn't have been nearly as bad. I'm sure fans of SHMUPS might really enjoy the game, especially those who like those ridiculous bullet hell SHMUPS.
Would you consider "Life Force" or "Gradius" to be overly difficult or unforgiving? There's no life bar in those games either, yet no one complains about them. This game was much easier and more fair in my opinion.
There's a difference between a game being the well made kind of difficult (Gradius, TwinBee/Stinger, Dark Souls) and one being difficult due to poor game mechanics.
Funny enough I have not been able to beat Gradius or Life Force to the best of my attempts, yet I can easily beat Silver Surfer. I certainly like Silver Surfer a whole lot more in terms of design, difficulty and of course soundtrack, until I am able to beat Gradius and Life Force I will decide how it fairs. Though I would say for now that yes Gradius and Life Force are a bit overly difficulty.
***** Hey Wiiguy, which stage in Silver Surfer do you find the easiest and hardest? I think Possessor is the easiest and Mephisto is the hardest. If you die against Mephisto you're pretty much screwed, cause your wimpy weapon won't beat him.
I've known about this ost for a couple years now, and I still can't wrap my head around how good this sounds, OR how well-written it is. It's like it isn't good "for NES music" or "given the limitations of the system" or whatever - it's just really good music. This stuff I would blare from my car, or use to try to teach myself musical techniques. BTW, I'm not sure if everyone knows, but there are a few remakes of Tim Follin tunes on OverClocked Remix, including the second BGM from Silver Surfer. (On the site you can search by original composer). Oh and Mr. Wiiguy309 - great freaking job enhancing all the NES music like you've done, it really does add something!
No problem man, you're being more kind. You're totally right, and although the Follins were the cream of the crop at this stuff, it's a shame that there's nothing with such limited technology that music gets written for - we definitely would have seen more highly talented composers of it. Since technology marches on, it was a necessarily limited number of years. Do you know of other composers for NES and other older consoles who took such pains to create great music? I mean there's catchy, and there's this. The Follin way seems to have been to disregard the limited audience of the music, forget what it's for, just make damn good music, top priority. Like they made the music as a hobby or for some kind of band, and it just happened to also be featured in the games. I guess in short they were highly overqualified, not that video games don't deserve good music. Sorry, I rant - it's my writing style :)
I can't believe I used to be so good at this game I could beat it without losing a life. Must have died like a billions times before I got that good. Man my brother was so pissed when I kept asking our parents to rent this game repeatedly. I was obsessed with beating with this game for like 6 months.
***** That's pretty much what I said. The game was so difficult but I loved the music. And the Surfer. I rented it over and over in spite of how damn hard it humped my face.
I mean they sound great in mono of course, but putting it into stereo just adds a nice little bit of depth. Thank you for doing such a good job with this, it sounds even better than it did on the NES :)
Just amazing... you are a God for doing this for 8bit game's music. I have worshiped the music genre since I was a kid in the 80's and it has NEVER sounded so rich and good! Thank you!
Kristina Rain don't think it did though, all of this was achieved without the usage of pcm samples :) just 2 pulse waves, triangle wave and a noise channel
don't know why you're complaining about the mixing.. and especially about the picture.. the echo effect is okay.. and to listen to that OST in stereo is just great! nobody is forcing you to look at the pic.. and it's not the general idea of uploading an OST.. imho we should be delighted.. that there is somebody who's uploading such great retro OST stuff!
AWESOME MUSIC MAN! please keep it going! you are great! would you mind doing the same for Action 52! I think there is great music in some games! thank you!
I love that the godly music of a Follin has reminded someone of all games, that Action 52 has good music, which it does. I will plan that to be up some time, has been requested, amazingly :P
Sweet job on this dude. You need to do 'Austin Powers: Welcome to My Underground Lair!' for GBC. Check it out if you haven't before, it's such a weird game to have good music but it fucking rocks.
I feel your pain!!! * Silver Surfer: Uh-oh!! Here comes a rubber duck that I can't shoot down! Maybe it's just part of the background! It's just gotta be.... Rubber Duck: NOPE!! *DOOOOOOOOOOON!!* and cue shot of Silver Surfer's dome cowering in fear. He has infinte powers and can destroy entire universes... but he can't take down one little rubber ducky!!! LOL
Aaack, like I'm a total reverb junkie, but this is just too much reverb for such a fast and tight soundtrack. I usually LOVE your upmixes, but this one feels like it needs tweaking.
