One of the best films on silversmithing I've seen. Women rarely entered the Gold/Silversmith trades when I started 50 decades ago. Now the trend has reversed, and it's a refreshing change.

I loved this episode! Having been to Amesbury many times, it is a lovely change from the Dallas Texas area that I call home. I have always had an interest in metal work. Although I have a garage Machine Shop with large heavy power tools & tooling that allows me to force metal into the shapes I desire, there is simple elegance in using one's own strength & skill to accomplish the same end using only human powered hand tools. My other favorite video, and one I highly recommend, "Secrets of the Samurai Sword" on PBS. This PBS program shows the ancient, (and the best way in my opinion), method used in making the finest Edged Weapons produced in the world. Raw ingredients are added in a huge hand-formed clay furnace, requiring days of controlling the temperature & color by adding assorted ingredients and driving oxygen into the furnace with hand-operated bellows. Next, days of hand forging, ending with a water quenching to case-harden the blade which causes the once straight blade to curve into the curved shape typical of Samurai Swords. And finally an insane amount of time spent to sharpen/polish the blade into its final and most beautiful form.

This is so encouraging to see that despite all these computerized machines spitting out cutlery, there's still room these beautiful, lovingly made works of art!♥️🤗

9:03 very few people understand the level a skill needed to remove all tool marks to that degree.
