www.insidesimra... presents a DIY project for your pleasure. This project began over a year ago as a very inexpensive option to the purchased button boxes available. However after a series of problems the project has changed direction for a more powerful and simpler option. In the end it cost a little more money but still came in at half the price of retail. In this video Cristy talks to Shaun about how he went about the project, the problems encountered, and how it turned out in the end.

I just built my own button box in 2 days. Not nearly at this level, but I enjoyed this video. I used some switches I bought from radio shack and a joystick encoder off of amazon. Bought a wood box from a craft store for $2 and some carbon fiber wrap off amazon for $10. Super fun project. Thanks Guys for another great video.

well, you dont really need many buttons for starters but if you want to be competitive you got to have some "on-the-go" adjustments/ pit stop strategies. Example: Break bias + Break bias - Increment Decrement Toggle upp Toggle down Toggle Split delta laptime Pit speed limiter "Pit out" "Pit in" "Pass left" "Pass right" "Thanks" "Sorry" Tire Blackbox Fuel Blackbox Tire info Mute other drivers Speak chat Optional: (Seating positions) Igniton Starter Im missing some but there is lots more!

You know by far the easiest way is to use one of those arcade encoders like a jpac. It's all pre programmed and just connects to the PC with a USB. Zero programming and no messing around with arduino/rpi.

Well as a sim racer you want your gear to be as realistic as possible. When racing you cant really look down from your screens and with a keyboard it is much harder/impossible to feel which button you pressed if you cant look. With a button box that has different colors and shapes you dont have to take your eyes of the screen for long/at all to press the right button.

I thought the same but you cannot fit all the buttons necessary on the wheel only. You can use the keyboard for the rest, but lets face it, it is not as realistic at all. It will really improve your pit strategy as well, and it is much easier to use compared to the keyboard.

I like it, but since I only race stock cars which are pretty simple in what you can do while racing, I'll stick to the G27 Shifter for all my buttons along with the wheel.

I think Shaun used SymProjects-stuff only in the box. That supports a bunch of games.. and I am apparantly not allowed to post a link here in the comments, but look up SymProjects

A few suggestions for future box projects, Shaun... Check out Polycase dot com... They have project boxes in all shapes and sizes, and will also laser cut anything you need on it, and can even screen the front face with whatever text you want on it. second, for the wire coming out of the box Neutrik makes a USB adapter that gives you a clean finish and handy USB-A connector for using any standard USB cable. Heck, you could probably have the hole for the Neutrik cut out as well by Polycase!

I have an question.I have pc steering wheel which have all the buttons from the Play Station(R1 R2 R3 L1 L2 L3 so if I connect this button box to pc will it mix my buttons when playing games?Thank you.P.S.Sorry for my bad English...

yeah but. who wants to hold a wheel in the air to drive ? You have to then attach it to a G27 and that costs more money

i got a jc24 from symprojects. its got a 2x5 pins on it. i just want to use 4 buttons and i dont want to solder on the board. would a ribbon cable 2x5 work?

Maybe someone can help what's best method for drilling holes in ABS project boxes without cracking? Brad point Bits , Spade Bits, Hole Saw or just regular Twist drill bits

Wow you make it sound a lot more complicated than it actually is, im 12 years old and i built one in less then a hour. Really it is not that hard, also you did not have to make a big button box which is more complicated and needs encoders and what not, you could just make a small one with an arduino pro micro or something, really it is not that hard!

Im not really following you here, you think a button box cost the double of 160 dollars? You can get a professional button box for 90 bucks at DSD. And as sim-racers we want our experience to be as realistic as possible. Not all race cars have all their buttons on the wheel.

The Simraceway wheel is awful. I bought one and it failed within 2 days. It just completely died. Got a refund and bought a fanatec porsche GT3 instead. Way better in every way.

Sry but these boxes are absoulutly useless for me. No time for me while Racing to look in the Box... I can see these Things much better on the TV Screen ..
