A popular hack allows an attacker to get into your bank and social media accounts, read your email and take over your phone number. This attack is something that can be done to you by people who know you well.

For starters, create a system for verified e-mails from known safe corporations and organizations. This system could represent verification with a lock symbol in the Inbox etc. This single step would dramatically help computer managers manage e-mail so much more effectively and securely and would give operators and their employers a leg up on e-mail fraud and hacking. This is done in my country on dead people's bank accounts ... Bank employees who notice bank accounts that have been idle for years partner with carrier employees to do SIM swap and then get the money out. The assumption is that the owner of the account is dead, and no one will follow up ... Buy the problem is that it could be an account left dormant but a living person. When he comes back, then account is empty, and when they complain the bank says they withdrew the money themselves.

This could be Latinamerica. Bank employees in Southamerica are notoriously handing over information go outside waiting gangs who are often their family members. They just gang together and assault customers when they arrive at home. That is why I did give my Bank an nearby street as address. Over here everything regards bank is handled over smartphones and WhatsApp. No fixed landlines anymore. Most often the customer who withdrew money is catched by 2 motorcycle hijackers at his own housedoor at gunpoint. That means eighter an bank employee is involved or motorcycle hijackers now learned some observation methods. Police is here often involved in assaults as well. So the police can be involved as well. Then often banks are owned by local politicians or politicians involved. That is why I am in a bank owned by international conglomerats.

Great advice for using 2 sim cards for privacy. Never figured out this for myself. There's also extra-steps for privacy you can do: 1st use VOIP numbers for some junk-services like registration in retail bonus program. They can be hacked and your "secret banking number" will be leaked to scammers. 2nd use "anonymous" prepaid sim card to face the public. It will protect you from corrupted telecom worker since it wouldn't have your name associated with you.

@EfficientRVer
@EfficientRVer Год назад
So, you don't bank online, because you don't trust yourself to not click on links that hackers send you? Online banking is safer than walking between your car and the bank, if you do all of your banking by logging in to your account directly, not following links in emails. Also, without online banking, you probably use many more checks than people who bank online. Every person you write a check to, sees your name, address, bank routing number, checking account number, and your signature. If you use your bank's online billpay features, it can be a check on the bank/service's own account which is sent to pay your bill, so they only see the first 1 or 2 of those 5 things your own personal check gives away. Think about that one for a minute.

@@BurgerKingHarkinian currently 90% of USD is virtual, meaning they never even printed the paper. When every banknote ever printed in American history would not be capable of handling the monetary transfers of the last 2 years, then it's time to open your eyes and realize we are already in a cashless society. If you are pretending that the token fraction of transfers of banknotes proves otherwise, then you might as well say we have a Bitcoin society by the same logic. 2 years ago Biden gave corporations more money than has ever physically existed. Bidenflation is the unavoidable result of that, unless he can figure out how to take billions of dollars away from corporations without decimating the currency that citizens depend of for daily commerce. At this point, a Bitcoin society might almost be better.
@BurgerKingHarkinian
@BurgerKingHarkinian Год назад
@@eusebiusthunked5259 That's simply not true. No need to be so hyper pessimistic. You can still go to an ATM in most places withdrawal your money and pay in cash for most things. So no, we do not yet live in a cashless society and hopefully we never will.

Excellent Report Rob, and much appreciated! At 2:00 min what you mention about SS7 compromises by governments may be an unlikely threat for most people. Might it not be a significant concern for many people in Government, media and private industry, as the degree to which clandestine intrusions and insiders that could or do have clandestine access to SS7 and other device or carrier services may not be fully known or disclosed? Years before any of this was publicly known there were examples such as RIM/Blackberry hacks that involved carrier exploits.

@@robbraxmantech Indeed Rob, which they have done. From personal experience at a large and politically active media network that was the target of what appeared to be state level attacks, exploits included some conducted through mobile carriers Such attacks when discovered, appeared to be involve China but may have been home state level actors masquerading as non-state actors who had some mobile carrier access or exploit to the mobile carrier as to provide plausible deniability if discovered. If such broad and deep attacks could be so easily implemented at a media network years ago. I would say that not only journalists, but anyone who is a government employee, Military Service member, Police officer, Business person or anyone with political, military or in media, should understand better the risks you just covered and also that mobile carriers could be knowingly or unknowingly involved in targeting individuals who could in-turn be placed at risk, along with cooperate, political or national security. I currently have friends in Politics, media and the military who share sensitive information such as business and political operations and strategies by text, email, Facebook, Zoom, Whatsapp and who use known thrid-party spyware apps believing they are secure because they use a Google or Apple device because they are "Secure". Much work still to be done in terms of public awareness of privacy and digital security

Even if you de-Google, say, the one phone that you own and take all of that social media and closed source app cr*p off it, you've taken a huge step towards your own privacy and security. Wifi triangulation on an Apple or Google Android phone sends your location 24x7 to those evil corporations - analysis of that data, especially your location at night, will reveal your home address to them and that probably puts you as being one of a small number of people that are known to live at that address. That alone gets them very close to obtaining your unique identity, even if you do nothing else. De-Googling a phone kills that location tracking data on you - they can't see your movements any more. That alone severely hampers their ability to identify you. Remember what Rob says frequently - it's not the fact that you leak data but whether or not that data can be linked to a real identity.

Thank you for the information. Using a second phone number for authentication implies that a company would have to support different phone numbers for authentication vs contact phone number. I'll have to look into this on some of the sites I would use this on. Question, a commenter on another video said to get an unlocked phone to avoid the swapping. How could that avoid swapping? It seems it would be easier without the middleman (the carrier). you use unlocked phones and practice second phone for 2FA so it seems to support my concern and invalidate what that person said.

I recorded a Walmart employee setting up ,or sim swapping as you put it, right at the electronics counter when I was buying the phone. The refused to sell me certain phones so I started recording. After leaving the store I took some pics of the custom ROM and boot loader. I even took the phone to a t-mobile store later and recorded a rep who stated "no that is not the software that should be on that phone from the factory". The last "clue" 😋 was the receipt someone had stuffed in the bottom of the box from a few days prior to my purchase that had the single line item "special order - Samsung XXXXX

Maybe it is different in the U.S. but in Canada a number port which is what we call it when your number is moved to a new carrier requires confirmation and has security in place. If same carrier then that is just a sim swap. The swap with same carrier is easier to possible hack but porting requires account number or phone imei and most send a code to the phone in a text message asking to confirm swap from original sim card. So original sim in a phone is required normally it's just asking you to reply yes. So in less someone physically has your phone or at least your original sim in an other phone they are not going to be able to port in most cases. Maybe they could use social hacking which is just talking staff into overriding on their end but this is not likely.

dual sim phones of foreign origin that have been purged are necessary for security. Rooting and bloatware purges are also necessary. One of these phones is a good authenticator for your accounts with NO SOCIAL MEDIA on them. They should remain secret hidden and usually off unless you need them. Using foreign or international sims which are not easily searched are good ways to do your authentication considering they still receive text messages. Keep this simple phone separate from your other devices and no google account. No data. No backups.

With my phone service provider when I call them I must supply a verbal password, and also the billing account number. If not supplied the necessary info they will not do any changes or moving the SIM. I rarely give out my mobile number. I give out another number that is forwarded to the mobile phone. Very few people know my mobile phone number. I never open any attachments or follow any links with emails that I cannot personally first verify the person who sent the message. I am very careful with web sites I visit.

Golly they can get to us in so many ways. I never click on links in emails either. This holiday there have been a glut of 'postal' notification emails in the vein of parcel/package on its way...payment needed to release it from customs.. ETC this must be a goldmine for the scammers at Christmas because who knows what might have been sent as a gift from overseas...amd in the UK we do have to pay for release of some objects through customs. Luckily the email senders real address pops up on my computer if pointed at and shows either a string of nonsense or a gmail address or similar..

Fortunately in Finland that does not work with banks. You need your customer ID, you pin code, a single use code and an SMS verification. If you have the app then you can use it to read a QR code instead. If you forget your codes, you must physically go to the bank with an ID (driver's license is not accepted) Though SIM swapping has been use here at least once. The full details have not been reveled but it has to be part of some combined attack involving things like fake Internet banks where the SIM swamping broke the last barrier.

For a subgroup (like RU-vid creators), Google requires that all 2FA be done with a Google App involved, including for TOTP. This is discussed in a prior 2FA video. This rule is not imposed on all yet but I've been under this rule for a year. I'm required to have a "Googled phone". I have it. It probably has been turned on once in 1 year.

With that said, I have an old channel with a couple of videos on it that I've done nothing with for a year or two - I should see if I can upload to that without 2FA because maybe I can use that. Thanks for the info, I wasn't aware that they hadn't imposed this on all creators yet.

i have a question about my recent sim swap. How was this possible? and what info do they have on me? makes no sense. i got a text from my official carrier number 611 telling me a security code. i didnt request it so i figured someone tried to log into my phone account online (u need the number and a 4 digit pin). i went to log in and changed the pin immediately. i got an email 5 minutes later saying my phone number was changed to another sim, and service dropped. how did they get through that 2 factor at the beginning and use the security text before my sim was swapped? how could they log in without seeing that text? and still make changes without my new pin? i never gave out my first pin to anyone ever, and changed the pin before they swapped it, and they still managed to swap it. how is it possible for that to happen? luckily nothing else was compromised as you need authenticator apps to get in. even if someone knew my details how could they get both pins? the phone carrier asks for account pin when u call on the phone.

What they should do is have you come to the store with ID and possibly ask you to bring other things with you. In fact it would be wonderful if there was a law that makes it so that you must go to a branch office of the carrier to do it and not just ask a few questions over the phone. There should be a draconian penalty to the carrier if they fail to do this and if accounts get compromised as a result they would have to pay to fix ALL damage it caused on top of paying the penalties.

Always keep your self safe and make it harder for other to pretend who you are. My home address is missing the letter of the block of where I live so people MIGHT find the address but still not know where I am living. Also my address has jump from 900 to 904, so I often use 902 which by council is a real council number. Look for ways to protect yourself and make it impossible to be found without going OFF GRID.
