One of my big brothers would sit by my bed when I would have asthma attacks at night. He would sing to me to calm me. Sometimes all night. This is one of the songs he sang.
"Brown-Eyed Girl" was by Van Morrison ... This was their biggest hit of their career, spending 6 weeks at #1 back in 1970 and was the overall #1 song of that year as well. Ironically after this song and the album of the same name, it caused the duo to break up.
When you asked what a "bridge over troubled waters" means, the answer, I believe, lies in the line that follows: "I will lay me down." He's offering to shield his friend from harm, like the old-fashioned notion that a gentleman should throw his coat over a puddle so a lady can walk over it without getting her feet wet.
@@lindanicholson950 Hadn't heard that story about Raleigh and Queen Elizabeth, so I looked it up on Wiki. They described it as probably "apocryphal," but I find it intriguing nonetheless, regardless of its veracity. Thanks for the comment.
Paul Simon (shorter man) wrote it and Art Garfunkel sang the main part. I cannot believe you never heard of the “Sound of Silence.” If you listen to their concert at Central Park, Garfunkel sings the whole song y himself.
S&G are the GOATS of Duos. This song won many Grammy's and other awards in 1972. Paul Simon, the shorter guy is considered one of the greatest song writers of the last century and Art Garfunkle's voice is pure silk. Every dong on that album is worth listening to. They broke up in the early 70's after years of great songs and then got together again several years later and delivered a free concert at Central Park and it is estimated that over 500,000 showed up. You can see it on YT. Should you do more reactions to S&G make sure to do only the studio versions b/c many of their songs had instrumentations that cannot be duplicated in concert. The Boxer, Homeward Bound, Cecilia, Scarborough Fair, Mrs. Robinson. After the break up Paul went on to write many new hit songs. He has had an incredible solo career. Still performing.
The tall one (Art Garfunkel) was singing lead and then when the harmony comes in, that is both Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel. Then, Art closes it out. Most songs are the both of them together in harmony. Beautiful song. I believe this won Song of the Year in 1970.
Paul Simon wrote this for Art Garfunkel to sing as a solo Gospel style song. Originally it only has 2 verses but Garfunkel insisted it needed a third verse where they would duet.
Simon had doubts about the arrangement. With Garfunkel's angelic voice and Larry Knechtel's gospel-tinged piano for the first two verses, it didn't seem to scream hit record. Adding bass, drums, strings and harmonies to the last verse, it took off like a jet plane. Simon said the first time he heard it on the radio, he could hear the magic in the mix. It won five awards in 1971, including Song of the Year and Record of the Year Grammy Awards.
I grew up listening to Simon & Garfunkel & had a lot of their records. Absolutely loved them & their harmonies. You won't find a bad song. They have had so many hits such as "Sound Of Silence", "The Boxer", "Mrs. Robinson", "Scarborough Fair", "At The Zoo", "Cecilia", "America", "I Am A Rock", "El Condor Pasa" etc. Paul Simon went on to have a huge solo career with lots of great songs.
The song won five awards at the 13th Annual Grammy Awards in 1971, including Grammy Award for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. It is Simon & Garfunkel's most successful single, and it is often considered their signature song; it topped the US Billboard Hot 100 chart for six weeks, and also reached number one in the United Kingdom, Canada, France and New Zealand. It reached the top five in eight other countries, eventually selling over six million copies worldwide. It became one of the most performed songs of the 20th century, covered by over 50 artists, including Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin and Johnny Cash. It is ranked number 66 on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.
Many artists have covered this song but in my opinion noone outdo the original. Simon and Gurfunkle have so many great songs The Boxer is another beautiful song.
This is such a great song and has been covered by a lot of great artists including Willie Nelson, Aretha Franklin, and even Elvis Presley - his version is really great too. (Oh, and Brown Eyed Girl is Van Morrison =P) Cheers
Though their split was difficult, it allowed Paul Simon to blossom in his solo career. Fifty Ways To Leave Your Lover, Late In The Evening, his work with Lady Black Mombassa on the album Graceland. Plus the album Rhythm of the Saints influenced by South America.🎉
poetic lyrics, folk, pop, classical music influences... a structure to cross above dangerous flowing water that could carry you away... paul simon is one of most influential songwriters of the last 60 years.
You need to watch the live version in Central Park. Breathtaking Happy New Year 🎆. That was Garfunkel, the tall one. Beautiful voice They are also the original singers of The Sound Of Silence
They are one of my all time favorites. The tall one ( Garfunkel) is the soft voice. The short one (Simon) writes most of the songs. As for Brown Eyed Girl, that's by Van Morrison. I love that song too.
Paul Simon said he was pressed for time in finishing the lyrics of the song, and that if it had more time he would have rewritten the last verse that starts with "Sail on silver girl". I never really thought it fit the rest of the song myself, and when I heard that I knew why. About 4 1/2 years ago I came up with some alternate lyrics for the last verse which keeps the song nonspecific and more universal regarding to whom it is sung ("dreams" would comprise two notes): Sail on silver light Sail on by Your time has come to find All your dreams on their way See how they shine Oh, if you need a friend I'm sailing right behind Like a bridge over troubled water I will ease your mind Like a bridge over troubled water I will ease your mind
The guy singing solo in the first two verses is the tall guy Art Garfunkel. That is Paul Simon joining in for the tird verse. Paul Simon composed this epic song, as he also did for basically all of their hits. I would highly recommend you also react to The Boxer & The sound Of Silence.
Try The Sound of Silence....then go get a gander at Paul Simon's work solo. And he was married to Edie Brickell, who is amazing...she was in Edie Brickell and New Bohemians...and more recently toured with Steve Martin....yes, THAT Steve Martin.
This duo two helped me survive my teenage years. Paul Simon is one of America's greatest songwriters/poets. Art Garfunkel had the voice of an angel, but alas he didn't have the same staying power or creative genius.
Well, now you have me hooked. If you have never heard one of the greatest songs ever performed by one of the greatest duos ever then you obviously haven't heard much of anything. Paul Simon wrote so many hits that you must have heard at least a few of them.
You would absolutely LOVE S&G. Innovative musically, great harmonies, fun and meaningful lyrics. I encourage you to listen to I Am A Rock, The Boxer, 49th St. Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy), Punky's Dilemma.
Brown Eyed Girl was done by Van Morrison. Glad you enjoyed S&G! Awesome troupadors! Check out The Boxer (studio version) and The sound Of Silence. (Studio version). Great response bro!
Agree. The second and third of the three huge hits for Simon and Garfunkel. There's a lot more besides, of course, and as a contemporary of both, I'm tickled to think I qualify as one of the old friends in "Bookends" ("How terribly strange to be seventy", now turning into "How terrribly strange to be eighty"!). Proud to be of the same era.
@@tonybennett4159 wow, Tony! Nice to hear from you! Always loved your beautiful voice. I am 72, so I grew up with you! Also a musician, if you want to see me just type in Rogers Double Bass on RU-vid! Happy New Year!
@@skiptrace1888 Sadly I have more right to my name than the other Tony who changed his surname from Benedetto to Bennett. Oh, and BTW, I didn't leave my heart in San Francisco.
So many wonderful songs from S and G. They really are the best duo ever. Try my personal favourite - "Kathy's Song" which Art Garfunkel says is Paul Simon's best love song.
You picked perhaps the greatest duo ever Michael! You know Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel got inspiration from other duos like the Everly Brothers and had love of Folk music. They were part to the New York Greewich Village scene that Bob Dylan and all the great came out of. Their first few attempts didn't do well on the charts but they did add some rock rhythms and instruments and things took off. They wrote album after album and hit after hit. They have taken breaks on the duo over time and Paul is a fantastic solo artist and Art is a good guy. They were loved by many and you know Elvis Presley does a fabulous cover of this song - just fantastic.
You could say the five greatest songwriters in history, period, and you'd have to find a place for Paul Simon. Dylan, Lennon/McCartney, Barry Gibb, King/Goffin, and Simon. You could argue for Bernie Taupin, but Simon's gotta be on the list.
It’s a humanity song, I think. Brotherhood, etc. Yes, like a bridge, I will lay ME down so that you can cross these troubled waters with ease….when you’re weary, tired, lonely, etc. One of the MOST Beautiful Songs ever written, and tho Elvis does his rendition and it’s great-no one will ever match Simon & Garfunkel on this one❤😊🎶
This is one of their masterpieces! Their music is so incredibly unique and well-made. Michael, you`ve got to watch "The Graduate" with Dustin Hoffmann. The whole movie is supported by S&G`s music. This brings back so many memories. I`ve been listening to them for so many years, and they still move me. Great reaction :) Thank you!
Bridge Over Troubled Water = Safety from life's storms. I'll help you get thru hard times. I'll be here for you. You can turn to me when life goes to shit. ETC.
Hello Michael. It's Garfunkel who sings(the taller) but Paul wrote it. To be honest, it's not my favorite and perhaps you'll prefer also an another song in the future. I recognize that it's a special song very peaceful. Glad to see you mate, and thank you for the english you always teach me. Great words, congratulations and I wish you a great Year 2023!!! 👍👍👍👍☀️☀️☀️☀️🎉🎉🎉🎉🥳🥳🥳🥳
Thank you for your reaction! And for choosing this song. But... Are you from Mars? Or from Moon? Can't believe there is someone on the Earth who doesn't know who Simon and Garfunkel were. Haven't you never seen the film "Forrest Gump"? S&G's song "Mrs. Robinson' was in OST. Have you never heard of " Sound of silence " - their another hit? Art Garfunkel and Paul Simon are still alive, what a great gift to human race.
I disagree. That reduces it. The bridge can be anyone who is prepared to put themselves out for another human being, making it universal and applicable to anyone of any belief system or atheists alike.
This album won the album of the year Grammy. When Paul accepted the award he thanked Stevie Wonder for not making an album that year. Paul had lost to Stevie a few times in tgethe past.
