Simon & Garfunkel "The Sounds of Silence" (Madison Square Garden, NYC 2009) Reaction | Asia and BJ 

This song isn't "The Sound of Silence", it's "The Boxer." They had so many great songs. "Bridge over Troubled Waters" and "Homeward Bound" are two of my favorites.

Bridge over troubled water is amazingly beautiful. It also may have been the song that broke the partnership. Paul wrote it. Art sang it and was smothered with adulation for his presentation. Reportedly, Paul actually became jealous.

Hey guys, just FYI - this song is NOT "Sound of Silence," it's "The Boxer."

Read the lyrics.. it's a very deep song and sad. Paul Simon sang this on SNL with NYPD & FDNY the first Saturday they came back on after September 11th. OMG..cried and cried. It's more of a New York anthem since then.

This was beautiful, but I would definitely recommend listening to the studio version too. There’s some gorgeous sounds on that track, that make it a song worth knowing about.

I grew up listening to Simon & Garfunkel & had a lot of their records. Absolutely loved them & their harmonies. You won't find a bad song. They have had so many hits such as "Bridge Over Troubled Water", "Sound Of Silence", "The Boxer", "Mrs. Robinson", "Scarborough Fair", "At The Zoo", "Cecilia", "America", "I Am A Rock", "El Condor Pasa" etc. Paul Simon went on to have a huge solo career with lots of great songs.

It is REALLY worth listening to the album version of this particular song - very different, although they did a nice job adapting to a version that is performable live. It is truly a classic, and the instrumentation is epic.

Spot on about the beat being “tropical”. Simon & Garfunkel, especially Paul Simon, experimented with world music and world beats increasingly over the years. *Check them out in the early 60s with just Paul on guitar and them harmonizing together. Simply incredible!

You think that's awesome the studio version is out of this world. I'm thankful for being a GenX and having family with a diverse music appreciation. They just put out some really, truly beautiful music. The lyrics, the harmonies, the melodies. Not sure if you’ve done “Bridge over troubled water”, “The Sound of Silence” and “Mrs. Robinson” but I highly recommend “Homeward Bound”, “I am a Rock” and “Kathy’s Song”. Then there’s Paul Simon’s solo career which we’ll save for another day. Yeah, I’m a fan. Much love. ❤️

As an aging baby boomer I've been blessed to have grown up with great music and artists like Simon & Garfunkel. It's sad to know they, and many others of those icons have reached the end of the road. Today's music is god awful.

while the live version of The Boxer was great, I would highly recommend that you listen to the studio version, it is much fuller with a rich sound, that obviously comes from the studio, but well worth the time to listen too. Have a listen and see....you will enjoy....

You should listen to the recorded version. ( The Boxer ) The musical sound effects are even more amazing. Paul Simon has been one of the best song writers since the 60's. Their songs have been covered by almost every famous singer for the past 50 years..The Sound Of Silence alone has been covered over 50 times.

The backbeat drag on the drums is what gives that “island feel”. The drummer is playing just a tiny bit slower that the other instruments. Adding the Theremin melodies adds to it

I love Simon and Gargunkle but this live version was not my favorite by a long shot. As good as it was, they have done it better in most of there other performances and, of course, the studio version.

I’ve never heard the lyric “just a come-on from the whores on 7th Avenue” get a round of applause LOL This song is spectacular, but I like the studio version better.

This song isn't just the same without the building strings and giant bass notes at the end. Definitely listen to the studio recording.

As others mentioned, "The Sounds of Silence" and "Bridge Over Troubled Water" are MUSTS but, IMO, the most beautiful lyrics I've ever heard (by anybody) are in "Kathy's Song". Sample: "And as I watch the drops of rain weave their weary paths and die, I know that I am like the rain; there but for the grace of you go I".

The two of them had split. They decided to get back together to do a show in Central Park (NY). They did not expect the reception they got. People showed them how much they loved their music. It turned into a great show.

This tune is all about Manhatten and an aging boxer who lives there. A girlfriend and I just happened to be in Manhatten this night, heard about this show from a bartender and strolled over to Central Park just in time for the first song. We grabbed a bottle of wines sat on a stone wall probably 500 yards from the stage. Still one of the best shows I've ever seen. What a beautiful evening.

A half million fans showed up for a free concert in Central Park in NYC. Enough said.......but this was not Central Park. It was Madison Square Garden and amazingly they were both in their late 60's. Still had it.

Fun fact: in the early 60's Columbia Records put together a folk trio group called The Pilgrims as their answer to Warner Records very popular hit folk trio Peter Paul and Mary. A then little known songwriter working in Tin Pan Alley came to the studio to shop a song that the Pilgrims' producer hoped to include on their debut album. He asked the songwriter to record a demo of the song for the Pilgrims to rehearse, but when he heard the song sung by the songwriter and his buddy he immediately gave them a contract to record it themselves, and the Pilgrims' debut album 'Just Arrived' was released without that song. The songwriter was Paul Simon, his buddy was Art Garfunkel, the song was 'Song Of Silence'. The lead singer of The Pilgrims was a black former soldier, who was also enjoying a successful career as an opera singer, dancer, musical and stage and Broadway actor and concert singer. He later had a very successful career on two hit tv sitcoms, 'Soap' and 'Benson'. His name was Robert Guillaume. This concert was called concert in the park. It was to raise money to restore Central Park in New York because the city was broke. This was recorded in 1981.

As many have pointed out, your title is wrong . . . They were both getting on by this point. I saw Art Garfunkel 10 years after this, in the UK, and his voice had virtually gone. At least I heard him sing this, and Bridge and Silence too, sort of. Never thought I would. You need to listen to the original studio version, it is a masterpiece. Not sure where the tropical vibe comes in, perhaps this will be dispelled by the original! 'Melancholy' was a good word to use.

You should almost never pick live videos---unless someone specifically requests it---they almost never sound as good as the record.

You were kind. This was a bust. Not their best accompaniment, or arrangement. Next time play the song you advertise. Didn't see that video, but there's better of theirs out there.

Boxer.....a man is in a fight for life from the get go.....and carries the scars...the reminders of every glove that laid him out...not to say women aren't either...just think that's what this song points to.

Studio version was more focused. This was good, but lessened the impact of the lyrics if you were that distracted.

This was a good performance but the sound wasn't great, with the size of the gig there was some serious natural echoing delay which made the tempo a bit sluggish to me. Their both in their late 60's here, but in their 20's their voices were even better and tighter in harmony. They were friends from their schooldays, and Paul Simon's brilliant song writing coupled with Art's angelic harmonies brought them massive success through the late sixties. They had a little taste of it even in their teens under the assumed names of 'Tom & Jerry' . In the mid-sixties they followed the then current folk music trend, but quickly became more and more adventurous with each album, but Paul's acoustic guitar was always at the heart of their music. Check our their studio versions, they're harmonies were even tighter, and the production and backing arrangements were diverse and stunning.
