There is nothing Catholic about this scene. Peter is not the Rock

Except for fact that he names him Cephas % Peter in Greek....literally The rock...he is the Rock the vicar of Christ, first among equals but FIRST

@@eddigiovanni1079 Peter is a rock( Petros) and Jesus Christ is the rock (Petra) . That passage was not about Peter but Peter's confession. Peter's confession was about Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the foundation of the Church. Peter became a rock by making that confession. When Jesus Christ called him a rock it was not only about Peter. It was about future believers. Jesus was saying if you make that confession, then you are a Christian. You are a rock, you become part of the Church. The Church is a spiritual house made up of small rocks( believers) standing on a foundation of Christ ( big rock). Simon means hearing in Hebrew. By changing his name to Peter. Jesus Christ was simply saying to Peter and to born again believers as a whole that if you hear his words and do them you are rock. Jesus Christ had changed Simon name to Peter much earlier in John's gospel. Jesus Christ spoke greek, hebrew and Aramaic and there is enough evidence that some of his disciples spoke greek as well. So the theory that the spoke Aramaic here and that the rock is kepha not Petros and Petra is false theory. The Catholic Church believe Peter is the rock because of power. The used Peter's connection to Rome and this verse to claim authority over other churches.

Or you might rightly conclude that the demonstrative adjective "this" ("this rock") refers to the direct antecedent (i.e., Peter himself), since it appears in that exact same verse (#18). It is far less likely that Christ is referring to a revelation ("You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.") which takes place two verses earlier (#16). And if He didn't mean Peter, why would He create the wordplay with "rock"? It makes no sense without it referring to Peter - and worse yet it would just sew confusion.

If you deny that here Christ proclaimed Sanctvs Petrvs as the Rock of the Church and His Vicar , you are effectly saying that Christ is some sort of socially incompetent fool who changes a Man's name to mean Rock , makes this change mean absolutely nothing and then in the same sentence that he did said change talks about a completely different Rock as the foundation of His Church .To deny Papal Primacy , you must blaspheme .

The Rock throughout scripture is who? Peter is the little stone or rock who denied Christ three times. Once the holy sprit came on Pentecost he cleaned up his act.​@@oolooo

To clarify my earlier comment I was only explaining that this particular movie, which is a fictionalized retelling of Matthew 16:13-20, has Nathaniel saying that some people think Jesus is John the Baptizer. I wasn't saying that Nathaniel never said who Jesus really is.

Precisely why Christ made Peter the first Pope! Peter, above all the other Disciples, understood what it was like to find yourself in the absolute depth of sin and shame when he denied Jesus (three times, no less) yet upon seeing our Risen Lord, he throws himself on His mercy and is forgiven. Peter was always the slowest to understand, the first to jump to rash action, yet Christ took a hot-headed fool and raised him and his successors up to be the leaders of the entire Church, just like what God did with Moses.
