If you watch the full interview, the ridiculous thing which even the interviewer raised was that he got someone else to bet in their name which was obviously to avoid being found out. Yet Toney still tries to pretend that wasn’t the reason and he did it because he didn’t want his parents to open his bank post and see that he had bet 😂
Never taking accountability for his behaviour, or responsibility for his own actions, paired with a false sense of victimhood mentality. Now, where have we seen these characteristics before?
Not only are the rules crystal clear regarding gambling, and I'm aware for a fact that they are at clubs. But he then lied about it all. He's a complete disgrace.
@@skp8748 😂😂😂he said I don’t gamble about football that’s when fa took it serious and started finding evidence also he bet on his team loosing when he isn’t playing
@@Camavinga0612 he can't influence the game if he's not playing so it doesn't matter if he bet on them to win or lose. If he was betting on them to lose in games he played I understand but he didn't.
If you remember a few weeks ago the Peterborough chairman suggested he should be allowed to go into clubs to speak to and educate young professionals regarding this. You can see from listening to his interview why they haven't asked him yo do this. Doesn't take accountability so would be a waste of time.
In 1990 Tony Adams crashed his car whilst drunk. This was typically a fine and points but in the weeks before Xmas they judiciary decided to make an example of him and send him to jail. He owned up immediately didn’t appeal didn’t moan, did his time and then came back to not only win the league for his team he won many more leagues, FA cup and European trophies as club captain, he also represented England and then started a charity / hospital for people with addictions. That’s why there is a statue of him at the Emirates and why many regard him as the greatest Arsenal captain. I love Simon Jordan even though he know the family he is honest by expressing his opinion maybe that’s why he would never get an interview with someone like Ivan Toney. The interview with Steve was just as bad as Prince Andrews with BBC.
A grey area??? Behave mate...it's been clear for years what you can and can't bet on. Leeds had a youth player banned for it 4-5 years ago so it's pretty clear senior pros can't bet on a fucking football match
Reminded me of the Prince Andrew interview. Obviously the crimes accused are not similar at all but the Arrogance of the individual to assume they can pull the wool over everyones eyes show the narcissism of their character.
Ivan Toney’s teammates must be absolutely fuming with him. I’m Utd fan but honestly I don’t want us to sign this melon, I reckon he’s a dressing room nightmare
I’ve got a friend with the same problem in the Daily Mail he was described as a former gambler he is an addict and will need treatment for the rest of his life. Lying is the biggest trait
What a bloody liar he didnt know the rules clearly? he betted against newcastle while he was a newcastle player surely he would have known he cant do that.
He did something (well, over 200 things!) that now stops him performing his contract duties as a football player, yet he's still entitled to get full pay from his employers. No wonder people say professional football lives in its own world with strange rules.
Even if you watch the full interview, he only accepts the punishment and at no stage takes accountability for his clear wrongdoing and breaching the rules of his profession. Just playing dumb won’t wash - he literally said “I don’t bet on football” to the FA during the initial investigation because he obviously knew it was wrong!
Ivan Toney should never be allowed to play professional football again. There are few rules you must adhere to, and if he can't stick to them, he's proven himself to be too stupid to qualify.
You can tell he outright lied when he was asked the reason he had someone else doing the bets. I also suspect he couldn't accept the truth that he bet against his team when he didn't play ( even though he did during the investigation) because he knew the backlash that would come
@@skp8748 well if he knows he won't be available before anyone else that's inside knowledge that the team are hindered. So him not playing is affecting things
They probably threw the book at him because he was pleading ignorance in the internal hearing. If he had been contrite and apologetic during the course of the investigation, he would likely have had a lesser punishment.
@Aaron-zh7qm I'm basing it from this interview about him trying to claim a "grey area". It's showing a lack of accountability and remorse so I can only assume he showed the same when being investigated
Jordan is really suggesting top clubs will care about character when United are currently washing Greenwood’s character in the hope he doesn’t lose market value & Arsenal have said not a peep about Partey 🤷♀️
those players have already proven themselves at the clubs though, when signing a new player and weighing up if he'll make it at a bigger club or not that'll come into it
He knew the rules. He would have some idea of the punishment. Take your sentence... deal with it. His attitude though is pretty damming.... I would actually add to his sentence.
I think he's a great player, but after hearing those tapes of him this guy is in denial. He shouldn't have done it. Accept responsibility and stop whining. Next thing you know he'll be claiming his punishment was harsh because he's black. Great player, but not the smartest guy.
Tell bent and goldstein that they are using incorrect statements when they say greenwood was cleared and found not guilty....all that happened is charges are dropped for the time been
I can never understand why professional footballers, particularly premier league players, feel they need to be involved in betting in the first place. You're paid more in a few months than most people would be able to save in a lifetime, yet you're playing with fire and potentially ruining your career just to make a bit more on the side... It's like a professional racing driver taking a sports car out and driving at 100mph+ on the weekends, why bother? What have you got to gain that you don't already have?
There is no grey area, they cat bet on football full stop. It used to be that they could not bet on games in there own league but they apparently found that confusing so a blanket ban on football betting was brought in.
In the interview, he admits he did lie initially thinking it would all go away. He says he didn't know betting on football was against the rules... whether true or not, Clubs should remind players of this every season and make the academy kids aware, not only of the risk of addiction but the risk of losing your career and reputation. As for the bets, they cleared him of match fixing but if you're betting on yourself to score then that may affect the game, but I guess strikers get goal scoring bonuses anyway so that's the same thing.
Ageee wholeheartedly with Simon Jordan, the most erudite pundit in the U.K. As a Bees fan, I can tell you he’s truly let the club down. Yes, he scored valuable goals. But no contrition whatsoever. Appears, allegedly, that he also likes to bend the truth. He’s a phenomenal and unique talent as an all round player ..But he needs to own his mistakes.
Somebody has to realise everyone bets, in one way or another. This interview was iladvisef and he wanted simpathy as with Dele Alli and its a different story. Big management mistake.
Mate the rights and wrongs as we see it are irrelevant. There are rules. Everyone knows there are rules. It's not something footballers and other sports people haven't fallen foul of before. The reality is that they're not allowed to bet on any football games and they know that. It's not a grey area. It is set in stone. There's no ambiguity. He would have been better served throwing his hands up and accepting he fucked up. Here's a thing. Had he not been doing this he would almost certainly have been looking at big moves this summer. Clubs might now look at him as a big risk, simply because he isn't taking responsibility.
Trippier told his mates he was moving clubs. He was banned and accepted that he was wrong. Tony bet on hundreds of games, denied until he couldn't and then said he didn't know it was wrong. Bit of a difference. @@TribalScan.
13:04 I think Simon's got the wrong end of the stick here. The FA rules are aimed at stopping players from being able to profit from gambling on the basis of being able to influence the outcome of games, or the equivalent of insider dealing. The rules don't apply below the National League level. It's not about the morality of gambling. If it were, the FA would prohibit gambling ads.
They do apply below the National League Level, I support a National League South team, and one of our players was banned for six months for betting on matches. He also used the unbelievable "I didn't know I wasn't supposed to bet on football matches" defence, after so many players have been banned for betting on football matches.
Ivan Toney will end up being the Wilfried Zaha of Brentford. That is to say that he's found his limit, he's the big fish in a medium sized pond and I doubt if he'll play for England again.
@SimonJordan and @jimwhite you’re missing 1.5 hours worth of context here- little 30 second sound bites of a 2hour discussion is hardly adequate journalism. Agree with some points raised but overall you’ve missed the point of this interview. Watch the interview in full.
The league can't have it bothe ways. You can have Betting companies names plastered over your shirts and tell players to have nothing to do with them. Football should completely distance themselves from this rotten industry.
Stephen: Famous tweet "I'm going to speak" will you speak now? Toney: I won't speak because my mum said I don't need to speak. *Does 2 hour podcast speaking about everything* ????????????
Denying and making it out like its a conspiracy... yeah. Thats bad. The fucked thing is... I would by an argument that his a big thick and didn't think it was an issue if it wasn't dodgy. And I totally understand someone with that mindset thinking its ok to bet on yourself to score first because... well its not really changing anything, his the main man striker who expects to go out and score the first goal. Martin explained the issue with that bet, but I can understand someone being thick and not realising that. And I don't think all footballers are stunningly intelligent people. But yeah. Listening to this interview. Tooney is full on in conspiracy mode. I suspect it will be a race issue next.
This should depend on what there bets were, if he’s putting accumulators on who cares, if he’s having massive singles using inside info that’s different. From what I read he broke the rules yes but ultimately it was all bets that were irrelevant. The allegations against the West Ham player are 1000s of times worse
Toney knew exactly what he was doing. I'm not a footballer but I know that the rule is no betting on football period. Really should have been banned for longer after hearing this. And if it was a addiction he could have spoken to someone.
Oneill is completely wrong…because even if you bet on your own team that’s basically implying that on other occasions you or your team are not playing to the best of their abilities to arrive at a particular outcome
He is just like the typical addict..it's ever one's fault and I take no responsibility for my actions. I wonder who held up with with a gun and made him bet over 200 times on football. He is a damn liar and deserved to be banned for longer based on his refusal to man up and shut up..
This is why betting firms should no longer be allowed to sponsor football. So a football player has a punt just like the man on the street... big deal... If it's such a horrible thing then why is the Premier League taking all their money??
The act of betting isn't the issue. It's the fact that betting on your teams, or professions you know, can influence how you or they play. Throwing performances, or playing to fulfill a bet is a problem
i agree, that interview was a terrible idea. I thought he would humble himself and play the boy-scout card and come out with a well rehearsed script where he talks about learning from that mistake, admitting he has a problem and is currently getting help. People would've lapped that up and looked past it. Then the likes of Arsenal would consider him. Arteta must go nowhere near a man that bets against his own team, what r&&*&%sh is that?
