What I like about you, Simon, is that you're open to new stuff and let us see the experiments, good or bad, as you do them.

I use shellac, latex, or paraffin wax resist for my Emergence pieces. Paraffin holds up best against the washing.

I was just watching one of the Anderson Ranch clips the other day. Your father used this method on a couple of pieces. Bullseye shellac I believe it was. I look forward to trying this!

I've done this on porcelain using just plain wax resist, and I've done it on leather hard clay using elmer's glue as well.

hi Simon I use shellac technique on my thrown porcelain. You need smooth clay (porcelain is best) make a thicker shellac yourself by mixing shellac flakes with Methylated spirit, this makes brushing easier and shellac less runny. When sponging use damp sponge washed out regularly. Shellac gives a harder surface than wax does not rub away when sponging. timgeeceramics

I've used wax resist and it works as well.

kroraven, I'm not sure shellac ( being organic not metallic) would ruin a electric kiln eliments, but it sure would stink when burning off. Want to have real good ventilation though! Like when using a lot of waxed pieces, yuck! Still would be good reason for raku kill. I use a very old electric kiln with the elements pulled out of it, with propane burner, for raku kiln.

put this through a raku firing with no glaze. reduce it heartily and you have a beautiful black finish. can be waxed or sprayed sealed

hey simon did some last week, you need to wash out your sponge regularly otherwise your just wiping the slip around the pot, you may have noticed better results when you brought out the big sponge.. jim gottuso does it brilliantly check out his blog..

I've had good results with polyurethane and porcelain. Amaco makes a glaze in the potter's choice series called True Celadon that works great with it.
