Are you quoting another video or are you just a dumb ass? The only thing he said at the beginning was he likes to keep both bass drums almost identical in pitch. So what's the big deal?
Well, I must say that after being in music for a few decades doing performance and studio work, I was dead certain I had seen it all. I was wrong...never witnessed anyone using a kick drum as a mini-trampoline. If it was anyone other than a master like Simon Phillips it would be an abomination. It's an abominable act I'll be trying soon. Very cool.
Ha ha ha ha and WITH his Shoes on??? i couldn't believe it. Love Simon, he is a monster. but i will not be jumping on my Kick Drum head with my shoes on any time soon. haaaaa!!!
I thought there is no way I could do that, being almost 100kgs, but when he starting jumping, I changed my mind. Don't think I'll be jumping, however. 3:30 'haven't been through one yet.' Solid endorsement for the drum head company.
Simon is awesome, but i somehow don't think he'll be jumping on any bass drum heads any time soon..lol ! I'd also be willing to bet he'll look back at this video now and say "rubbish" about his black Tama tights, cringe with embarrassment and have a good laugh ..
Everybody is understandably astounded by his stretching technique, but I just want to say the towel trick really works. I've tried many different dampening methods, but this is the best by far. Nice, low thump. I have a 22" Tama Rockstar from the late 90s, but my kick drum sounds amazing.
Totally NOT necessary to jump on your bass drum head 3:27. If it comes apart from the rim, you're screwed. If I worked at a music store and someone tried to return a broken head because he jumped on it, I'd laugh in his face. Simon gets his stuff for free, so he can do all the silly tricks he wants.
Actually no, the big three in drum heads (Remo, Evans, Aquarian) all make their drum heads in the U.S. Tama currently uses Evans as their drum head supplier for the drums they sell. I still would never jump on my bass drum head like a trampoline. That's just nuts and not necessary.
3:29 what happens if the head separates from the rim? Do you explain to the salesman it broke while you were jumping on it? When he finishes laughing at you, maybe he'll be nice enough to exchange it for you. It seems very unnecessary and risky to jump on your bass drum head.
ive found over the years that all musicians are .... weird.... and its futile to try and copy someones weirdness. be yourself..... be true to your own weirdness. be different ... and be great .
So he says at the end: "I put the mic inside and tension the head up." But how do you connect the mic with a cable thru a head with no hole in it, can anybody explain it to me please? Greetings from the Netherlands🇳🇱👍
I first tighten the skins up so tight that when you start to see stretch marks I then spray "fart gas" around the beater head until it runs onto the kick pedal. Then, the split second I play the kick, I pass out from the stench only to come out of an unconscionable state to find my kit was on fire and my leg hair and ball sack was singed! I found out (in hospital) that my solo was where the pyrotechnics was to happen.
Don't ask which recording it was because I do not remember BuT there is a record with Jack Dejohnette playing double bass drums, Jazz tuning so higher pitched but with one of the bass drums tuned quite a bit Lower than the other--- and it's really quite interesting and Jack of course handles it beautifully though he's not known as a 2 bass drum guy,,,,,, wish I could remember which record,,, sorry, lost in the fog of my memory...
Tunning bass drums have many things that can affect the way it sounds....size of the bass drum,Type of head used, how many lugs, dryer?more boomy?....i suggest to experiment until you reach the point you really like the sound and how it is feels on you pedal/leg.not very fond of jumping on it,but you should apply a strong pressure to the head to make it sit better on the shell
Most drum head companies have 2ply drumheads which could be considered a thick head, but it mainly comes down on how you tune it and how much muffling you use.
I could honestly just sit and listen to him talk all day hes just got such a tone love Simon he was my first inspiration when i started drumming watched this VHS so much when i was a kid
And I get PISSED if someone sits behind my kit without asking. Whooo faaah loo!!! Sorry Simon, NOT on the same tuning page with you on this one. Your playing and drum sound is OFF THE CHAIN INSANE!!! But standing on my TAMA ROCKSTAR bass drum heads.......NOT HAPPENING. Peace and "DRUM TILL YOUR BODY GOES NUMB." 🤘🏼🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁
It is strange, but strange people get to kill musical instruments in seconds. It is as if these mimose drum pedal or woodblock feels instantly when not her genuine master is banging on them.
