I’m one of the few people that actually lived The Who’s ‘89 tour. Simon Phillips was one big reason. His work with Townshend’s Deep End live work was delightful as well.

That was when I first really learned of Simon, and loved him ever since. Then I remembering first hearing Roger Daltrey's live album, "A Celebration: The Music of Pete Townshend and The Who" and really loving Simon's style on that as well.

You only really need to know one fact about Simon Phillips. He was the drummer chosen to replace the late great Jeff Porcaro on the '92 Toto tour. It really is as simple as that. And he was the right choice as well, as heartbreaking as the entire experience must have been for all involved.. He's an absolute class act.
@melodymakermark

Yeah, when your quest is to replace Porcaro, it’s a pretty limited field, but Simon was up for the challenge.

Around 1979, I saw Simon play for Jeff, the drum solo for Scatterbrain was exhausting to watch, very powerful performance, Simon jumped on Jeff's back afterwards and was carried off for the encore. Within a year I saw him play for Stanley, great band for that one, including Stanley playing 2 bass guitars at once.

Simon is a solid guy. I met him after a Toto show in Arizona back in 2001(?) And he was so personable, funny and gracious and we talked about some recorded shows I had seen of them and he was very curious how I got a hold of them (Pre-RU-vid era) and also discussed how he locks in with Luke during the show and how they make subtle changes based on something either of them do in the moment like a jazz improvisation. Curious if he will ever be a part of Toto in concert again...

Your drums are one of the best music I’ve been listening to. You are the most preferable drummer when it comes to performing a drum part with a feeling and a taste. You are an incredible talented and intelligent musician. Thank you for the music and keep it up man 👍🤩😀❤️🍻

I tried to make an interview with Steve Lukather when he was in Hamburg with Los Lobotomies. It was before their concert in the „Fabrik“ but after my first question Steve made some nasty and real stupid comments. I was with a guy who had to make all the photos of this event and there also have been all the other band members in the room when this strange situation happend. Right before the situation escalated completely Simon came, looked at Steve and intervented in a very soft and sensitive way. So Steve went away and I made an excellent interview with Simon. But I will never forget the strange situation with Steve.

Crazy how the music industry works, artists I'm not interested in I can find literally everywhere, every platform, want it or not, and they make huge amounts of money, and artists I am interested in and their works, like this box set, are so freaking hard to get and the artists can't even make a decent earning out of them. Everything is backwards.
