Never heard a drummer say that drums change over time from being played. (say, like an acoustic guitar "opens up" over time) But it totally makes sense! Very insightful... I still have my Cordia Artstars I bought 35 years ago and I'd put them up against anything!
Growing up, I was never a fan of Tama drums for some reason. Couldn’t tell you why. But as I grew and matured as a person and as a musician, I would listen to certain records and drummers and I would absolutely love the sound of the drums. As I researched what some of my favorites were using, it almost always came up Tama. Tried some myself and just fell in love with Tama drums. It’s my sound. I bought an SLP 14x7 Backbeat birch/bubinga snare. I don’t have Tama kit, but I fully intend to get one. I just love the drums.
jwebby85 Find yourself a used Birch/Bubinga kit. They aren’t being made anymore so don’t wait too long if you’ve ever thought of getting one. The longer you wait the more difficult it will be to get one in MINT condition. I have 2 B/B kits and I LOVE them. High end to the core. You should be able to find a nice 5 piece shell pack for $1500. The cheaper they are the more scratches you’ll find unfortunately.
Even though this is an advertisement video made by an endorser it absolutely makes sense what he says and it's a pleasure to listen to Simon. Just watch the two videos of Vinnie Colaiuta where he talks about the Paiste Modern Essentials and the Video being filmed while he unboxes the blue Gretsch-Kit if you want to see how it shouldn't be done.....
I Love my Starclassic Performer B/B in Black cloud silver linings!! So beautiful looking and sounding Drums!! In my opinion Tama makes the best Drums on Earth.
TAMA original 1987 Granstar Custom drums with thick Hokkaido Birch shells in Heather Metallic lacquer inside and out for the win!! MASSIVE THUNDEROUS TONE!!!
The mic picks up more of the star drums cause the star drums have much more tone. They resonate for days with the great isolated hardware and the thinner shells and tamas new shell recipe for the star lines. That’s why a lot of jazz guys and more dynamic players love star drums. I prefer the aggressive more thicker shelled starclassics but the tone on the stars are beautiful.
There is a thing i would ask but probably will never be able to. The hihat stand is inclined? It looks inclined to you. If so, how is that possible (what kind of hardware)?
drumsanddrumming totally agree. Glad cobham went back to tama. After tama asked him to come to the tama anniversary festival and try out the new star drums he switched immediately. Haha. Glad he’s back with the tama family. TAMA ALL DAYYYY. I wouldn’t trade my 5 piece tama starclassic BB hyperdrive kit for anything in the world. The perfect sound feel and looks for me and the sound I’ve been searching for my entire life but could never find with other brands and other shells like my past drum kits being a DW maple mahogany (total rip off cause dws sound like shit and are priced wayyyyy too high), Yamaha recording custom, and a pearl masters maple, and none of them just did it for me and I was switching selling and switching and selling all these kits but come to find out my last search being the tama BB was the cheapest out of all of them but built the strongest, built the best, looks the best, best finish, best hardware like the quick lock Tom brackets, quick lock floor Tom Leg brackets, air cushioned floor Tom legs, swivel wing mounting system, and the hyperdrive sizes since i have always preferred shallow toms. All that for 1900 shipped straight from the tama warehouse. No other company gives you all that tech and top quality and sound for that price. It’s crazy tama brought down all those amazing hardware features to the starclassic line from the flagship star drums and still maintained that affordable price. And I also have a Japanese starclassic bubinga kit and I can faithfully say there is NO DROP OFF in quality from the china made Starclassics since my BB’s were built in the Chinese factory. People complain about that but that’s how tama gives us this great price for this quality. Obviously if I could choose I would have it built by the masters in Japan but they have trained the Chinese builders perfectly and they are now masters of the craft as well now.
