Simon Phillips presents his drum kit exclusively for en.beatit.tv/ - the drummers' website.
en.beatit.tv/simon-phillips-p...
"This is a Tama Star maple shell drum kit. Obviously, custom built. I think most of the Star drums are apart from some, maybe, regular size drums. Let’s start with all the drum sizes.
The bass drums are 24” by 15”. One inch shorter than what would normally be a 24” x 16” bass drum. Personally, if I could have 14” depth bass drums, like the old-fashioned sizes, I would. I think they sound better because the front head responds quicker when there’s not too much depth in the bass drum. But there’s a problem and that’s the tom tom holder. If I don’t put that mount way to the front of the bass drum, I end up with the toms in my lap and I can’t play. That’s mainly because, by today’s standards, I use large size tom toms. By yesterday’s standards, they’re normal. It’s just the way fashion has gone and hence why tom tom holders are put closer to you so the small drums are close enough to be playable. But this is a problem for me so I have to have at least a 15” depth bass drum purely so the kit sets up properly. That’s nothing to do with sound. I think the fashion is to have deep bass drums these days. It actually works the other way. It ends up sounding thinner and smaller because that front head doesn’t react so quickly. It doesn’t matter if you don’t use the front head and it would actually be more beneficial but I use a front head so I need that head to respond very quickly to get all the bottom end. So those are the bass drums.
Tom tom sizes. This little one… I always forget. This may sound silly. I know it’s a 10-inch but some of my drums are 6.5” and some of them are 7”. Don’t ask me why.
That’s a 12” x 9”, 13” x 10”, 14” x 11”, 15” x 12”, 16” x 13”. I think that’s it. 18” x 14”. That’s it ’cause it’s one inch deeper than the old-fashioned standard, which is 12” x 8”, 13” x 9”. Although that was always a 15” x 12” for some reason. So those are the toms. Six are mounted. They have a lot of play in them, which helps the tone. The floor tom is regular but the legs they’ve designed make it wobble around, which makes it work a bit better.
This is a gong drum. It’s a 20” x 14” shell. It has a rim on one side only ’cause it’s only got one head and I use a timpani head. It goes boom and that’s what we like. It lasts forever.
Snare drums. This is exactly the same shell as these, which is a maple ply, not solid maple. This is a 14” x 6.5”, eight-lug. This is a 10” x 5.5”. This is a 12” x 5.5”, I think. That might be a 10” x 5”. I’m not actually sure ’cause there’s other drums which are different.
All the heads are Remo Ambassador. As you can see, clear on the toms - top and bottom. Clear on the bass drums - front and back. Clear on the top of the octobans and the snare drums are Ambassador Coated. They work really well with brushes. As I said before, there’s a timpani head on the gong drum. I think that’s all for the drums themselves.
Cymbals. Every set of my cymbals is slightly different only because of circumstance. The cymbals I like to use are the Zildjian Armand series, which, you’ll see here, is written on them. Actually, this may say „Avedis” but it’s actually an Armand. That splash is an Armand. This is an Avedis. I think that is also an Avedis and this is an Armand. You may wonder why the Armand say ’Avedis’. The real Avedis Zildjians have a bigger ’A’ on them. The reason is because the Armand series was discontinued. Much to my dismay. What they do for me, as a special customer, they make me Armands when they can but they have to stamp them… There’s two ways they stamp them. One is… We don’t have it here. Interesting. It’s called Sound something Prototype. I never remember what they’re called [Zildjian Sound Lab Prototype]. Or they’ll just put an Avedis Zildjian stamp on them because it would be very confusing for people if they see Armand and they can’t buy them. That’s the only reason.
This is a very special cymbal. It was made in 1979. During my first visit to the Zildjian factory, I found two of these. They’re called Swish Knockers, ’cause they’re 24” sized. They’ve tried to make them like that in recent years and they’re nowhere near the same. The other kinda special cymbal is this one. This is a remake of a cymbal they used to call the Oriental Trash. Now, they’ve discontinued those, too. I happen to have a couple of the original ones, which actually look a little different. They have a different color to them for some reason. They made these specially for me only last year, I think. They’re absolutely beautiful.
Something I like to do. This is a Trashformer. It’s pretty interesting. Sounds like a miniature gong. It makes a real dustbin type sound, which I think is actually very cool for certain things. That’s what I’ve been doing recently."

I better not make a comment....I got attacked by people saying that Gregg Bisonette was at the same skill level. Sometimes better I keep my opinion to myself as someone who has played drums for 40 years and spent thousands of hours listening to drummers and reading books and articles. All I said was Phillips made Bisonette look like a toilet. My opinion but last time I checked I wasn't living in a communist country and I could express an opinion.

Neil you are of course entitled to your opinion but clearly haven't heard or seen enough of Simon's open handed drumming over the last 40 plus years,I love Billy but Simon took what Billy did and cleaned it up/expanded the concepts until they were Simon's own. The mans independence/control is awesome ! It's fair to say he is one of the most original/creative/influential drummers thus far,at 63 if the man wants to repeat a few ideas then what's wrong with that ? As musicians we all do that,presented with as much material to drum on as he obviously does it's bound to happen.

Simon's drums are all mounted traditionally (tom holders etc) so that when one drum is hit, all the others resonate and add to the sound. Racks isolate the drums, so this doesn't happen. Plus racks look awful, like painter's scaffolds.

I completely agree about the 14" bas drum depth. But you could eliminate the tom holder problem with a rack application. There's also a unique mount from INDe drums that mounts as part of the tuning lugs which you could put right at the very front of the bass drum so it would mount the toms immediately over the front lugs. That should buy you at least the extra inch you have to use and go with a 14" drum. Regarding the floor tom legs having to come out where the place locks can get dislodged, you could put the place locks ABOVE the fitting on the drum instead of below, and push the legs up so the top of the legs are flush with the top head. Then you push rotate the leg until the bottom is tucked up next to the drum and store and transport the drum with all the legs secured on it. Then when you go to set it up, you just bring the leg downward until the lock hits the top of the holder so it will be right back in place....My 2 cents anyway....
@IAmInfinitus208
@IAmInfinitus208 Год назад
Simon doesn't go for a drum rack/power tower application anymore as he prefers the toms to have resonance with each other. I've heard that drum racks completely isolate the toms in its own place and thus not creating enough resonance to travel with each other. I guess his tastes changed, especially since he is after all also an engineer in the studio recordings as well. Also doesn't he use 15" depth instead for the kick to allow the mount to have space he wants for his configuration, I believe that's what Tama listed under his specs.

The China on his right side is not a "Oriental China Trash" ( They still make those btw ). It was called a Zildjian "Athentic China". They have the wider edge, like his. And yes, Discontinued....

Because alot keep asking why Simon doesn't go for a rack & not understanding why, allow me to clarify & to stop bloody trolls wasting everyone's time: Simon doesn't go for a drum rack/power tower application anymore since the 90's as he prefers the toms to have resonance with each other. I've heard that drum racks completely isolate the toms in its own place and thus not creating enough resonance to travel with each other whenever he strikes and thus rings with all the toms for his open approach to sound. This is why he wants that 'wobble' in his toms. His tastes have changed in sound in his experience. Especially since, keep in mind, he is after all also an engineer in the studio recordings as well so he would want the best sound he wants as possible out of his kit, and open as he likes it. Let Simon decide want he wants, it's not *OURS* to decide what an artist should sound like, that's nothing but forcing down an opinion on their throats and not allowing freewill to decide! There.

It's a pity he didn't tap the heads on the bass drums. They are tensioned unbelievably high, and when he hits them they sound like cannons!

If he explains why his basdrums are 1" shorter and sound better, why didn't he do that with the toms?
