Simple and cheap farmhouse table

So I finally made my wife a dining room table. She saw a similar one for around 1000 dollars. Made with similar materials. I thought we could do a little better. The table measures 30H"x36D"x54W. The table was made from 2x8, 4x4 and 2x4 construction. I used a Minwax polyurethane, stain and wood conditioner. Pocket hole screws and wood glue were used on most of the project.
Also a huge shout out to Philip DeFranco / sxephil for featuring one of my videos in his latest video. I cannot express my gratitude for this! He helped this channel in words I cannot explain!

This table arrived well packaged and on time. ru-vid.comUgkxn94T8Mu1iMnsLCMNOI9srXSsLkI4JXKW Like another reviewer advised, I pulled everything out and made sure everything was included (everything was!). I built it alone and it took me about an hour. The color is great and for the price the lift part works well. As others have mentioned, it’s not the smoothest opening/closing, but it works. The screws do show, but I plan to order white sticker covers if that bothers us too much. Really happy with this table! UPDATE: it’s been over a year since we got this coffee table and we still love it! It gets HEAVY use as our dining table, foot rest, and school desk. Over time, the opening and closing mechanism has gotten smoother. I added a new photo with the white screw cover stickers. They blend in perfectly and make it look a little cleaner. 100% recommend!!!

Simply gorgeous. Since I'm a 70YO Nanny I think I would do the conditioning/staining/poly on the wood before I put it together, then do some touch-up, because it's hard for me to get up and down off the floor. I'm building a new house and can't wait to set up my workshop so I can do some projects like this. A bench/stool/side table to match would be so pretty! Thanks for the ideas and very nice for you to let your little one help out. My Daddy did the same with me and it instilled a love of making things out of wood into my soul. God bless you!

I've been a pro woodworker for most of my 70 years except when I was in College and the military, totally handcrafting everything. I wonder sometimes how I managed to build 100's of tables, furniture and cabinetry without pocket screws. Never had a failure traditional building. I've had many people contact me about their tables failing, especially the tops joined with pocket screws and glue. I told them to contact the person that built their table for them. I'll just bet that top is destined for a failure, especially using SYP, and most likely from a big box store.

Given the moisture content of the construction grade lumber that is pinned to the breadboard edges I don't think this is something that is gonna get passed on to the grankids.

Easy way to put a stop to that..from the bottom side router 1/2 wide slot ( from one side to the other..) grab some 1/2 rebar and epoxy..pour epoxy into the groove lay your rebar in it and let it cure...problem solved 😉

Great video you provided for others to be able to build their own, enjoy wood working, and end up with a great table to be proud of. I am looking to build a large building table for my office/hobby room upstairs. I build scale RC model planes. I am getting ready to build a 1/5th scale 89" North American P-51 Mustang. My table used previously (daughters study table going thru college) has worked great on smaller models but this one will require a length to fit a 77" x 42" plans to fit onto. So probably 7.5' x 4.5' or depends on widths of wood I use. Maybe buying a used table is cheaper. Sand and refinish it. Thanks again! Wow! Today you had 7.4K likes on your RU-vid video.

I do love how well you handled the constructive criticism. Every project is a lesson learned. I look at every one of mine days, sometimes weeks later and look closely at it and figure out what worked well, what worked so so and what I need to never do again. This is a great build, I love the simplistic yet decorative design of it. When you build your next one, you will have that much more knowledge. WELL DONE!

I’m not going to bother nitpicking the method for the bread board ends, or the pocket screws. This build is exactly what it claims to be, and yields a nice looking finished product. There are some differences that I will make with my methods of building one, but there is certainly good info here. For example, I will probably trim off the rounded ends of the board edges for a cleaner joint. I might even get crazy and use some glue and biscuits. The leg design is really quite nice, and I will probably be borrowing some ideas from that as well. Like many others have commented though, I’m curious how this build will hold up over time with seasonal changes. Great work!

The coatings should seal it pretty well to control swelling or shrinking under normal conditions, wouldn't you suppose?
@rogermurph101
@rogermurph101 6 лет назад
fdadf adfad no. I don't know for certain, but I doubt he stained and sealed the bottom side of the tabletop. And all the joints between boards don't get stained or sealed. No matter how tight those joints are, they're not airtight. There's a high probability those boards will shrink, since dimensional lumber is usually pretty wet. It may hold up, but most likely it's going to develop cracks, and some boards may warp, twist, or cup as they dry out. Time will tell.

the bread boards are a weak point in many designs like this. If you're not careful in your wood selection and get a board with a core it will warp over time. I might also mention that even though the legs over lap the bread board it is still a heavy board and it will become a weak point creating a gap in the table. the best way to address this issue is to simply add a skirt to the table. It provides additional support, aesthetic and can hid the under boards which are generally fairly rough. This is a great build though and my nit picks are simply my own experience.
