Shockingly for folks like me in their fifties, 70s vintage is in fact antique!! Love this sweet quilt 💜

Beth I just appreciate your sweet spirit and lovely voice. I am a recovering perfectionist, you help me each time I watch you quilt. I have learned from you that imperfect can still be lovely. Love your color choices and your goal of using what you have. I think my stash will be out living me. I am 73 and still learning. Thank dear friend.

I love this. Sometime the simplest designs have the greatest impact. Scrappy and just enough hearts randomly placed = perfection. I’m struggling with fabrics from the 70’s being ‘vintage’ as I remember wearing pretty dresses my mother made for me out of little prints like those you’ve used. I’m in my 50s and feel so young, not vintage at all. 😀👋🇦🇺

👏👏no machine appliqué for Beth! Lucky baby, so cute💕 since Covid, cute baby fabric is hard to find. I collect vintage juvenile fabric and in recent years it is rare I find any at all. I have already (no grandchildren yet) hand appliqué two small quilts-1920’s appliqué pattern of the cutest puppy dog with a bow tie. I used nothing but vintage fabric and the bow ties with all those vintage characters is adorable. It took me 3 yrs, on and off to finish, but I get them out so often, just to look at. That fabric makes me so happy. Fabric is art🙂

I like sewing lightweight interfacing this way for a nice clean edge on the applique piece, but I didn't like the extra weight it added. Now I trim it closer to the edge to remove a lot of the interfacing. Smooth clean edge without bulk.

I love your quilt. That was a great find on EBay. I bought a scrap bag of “vintage” fabric from an Etsy shop recently. I need to be more careful when I’m buying a “great” deal. Old sheer curtains and heavy weight fabric from the 70’s and 80’s can be vintage but it’s not good for quilting. Or is it? When you said it doesn’t have to be interfacing, it could be light weight fabric those sheer curtains popped in my head. 💡 I’m going to give it a try? 🤞Now to think of a way to to use the heavy almost canvas like fabric. Half the box was quilting fabric the other half not. 😉 It was still a good deal just not as good as I thought. Thanks for the idea! And beautiful quilt!
@trinam2503
@trinam2503 2 года назад
The thin fabric would be fine for foundation instead of the interfacing. The thicker fabric might make good tote bags. They are charging for plastic grocery bags where my parents and in-laws live, so I make them duck cloth and canvas tote bags for their shopping. Or use them to make a heavier quilt for winter or for picnics. 😊

I would sew the hearts down with a small blind hem stitch and nylon thread on top. Sew around hearts on background letting the swing stitches catch the hearts. Hem stitch should be very short and small and barely catch the heart. A thin regular thread would work also.

I told a friend I would make a quilt for her baby, and she found out yesterday that it's a girl. I've spent a big chunk of time today looking at charm packs and patterns, and realized I kind of just want to wing it and make something pretty without a real pattern. I was thinking about appliquing hearts onto solid squares, and alternating with quarter square triangles. And then I came over to RU-vid and realized that's pretty much what you've been up to too. 😁. I love those calicos. What a charming little quilt.

Hi Beth! This is so cute. Need your input on using flannel for this project. I have 2 charm packs in little girl colors that would be perfect. Just don't know if flannel would be too thick to applique. Your thoughts?
@trinam2503
@trinam2503 2 года назад
Have you ever done raw edge applique? That would be perfect for flannel. If you have your quilts professionally quilted, I would ask your quilter before this type of applique. Some long as handle it just fine and some are finicky if there are thicker spots in the quilt. If you do them yourself make a 4 or 9 patch sample and try quilting it to see if your machine handles the thicker spots ok. It would be adorable in flannel either way! 😊

Help!! I was gifted a LOT of homespun material. Maybe 20 yds. I know I could do a simple quilt, even a 4 square. But is there a pattern that would show off these browns that is traditional and pretty easy? Also would you pair them with an unbleached muslin as background? Probably have enough for several quilts. And from those scraps, will likely make some small wheelchair lap throws.
