ice pick (edge inwards always) is great for up high areas like you said, neck and lung area. When talking low like the femoral artery, it's good to hold regular grip but with edge facing in. whether up or down wards grip, people tend to stab out and pull in with a circular motion, under duress no one stabs in and pushes out. That's why if using a single edged knife hold it edge inwards and go stab oriented, don't worry about slashing or cutting. If using a double edged knife, it doesn't matter.

I disagree. I have used large circular motions from day one. It was how I was trained, thank God. I've had one knife fight, and I've used a knife one other time in real life. Both i used slashing to keep them at bay, aiming for hands, arms, and legs , trying to avoid killing if I could, if I wanted them dead it would have been much easier, but being I knew I could beat the one with ease, and the other had a knife aimed at a woman and child, I struck his hamstring. I pray I never see real violence again. That was enough for me, I was a much younger man, faster and better trained then now as a father and husband. Can I still use a blade and my hands, absolutely, but these days I don't want violence at all, and solely train to teach my kids self defense.

Refreshing to see. Knife fighting is brutal. A lot of these channels dismiss modern day knife duels. They are ignorant. Knife duels go on everyday around the country. In fact you are more likely to be stabbed than shot. I have been in knife duels on the streets and in prison. Unlike a gun you have no idea what type of blade your attacker might have. Which requires different defenses. We had a saying: knives are to be felt and not seen. You might have to face a boxcutter. Or ice pick. Or screwdriver. Or machete. Or brass knuck knives. Knife attacks are usually unseen. And stealthy. Usually you dont know you have been attacked until you have been stabbed a couple times. The biggest obstacle you will face is yourself. You really have to come to grips with the fact you are going to look like swiss cheese. If you freak out over the taste of your own blood in your mouth you will go into shock. I have seen many over my 70 years who went into shock and just stood there. Incapable of raising arms to deflect the blows. He stood there and died as the guy continued to stab him. I had to train myself to sublimate stress. You see in knife duels you sometimes have to allow yourself to get stabbed. No hesitation in the heat of battle. The guy is coming down at your throat. Your only defense is to block with a less lethal part of your body. So you give up your shoulder to keep from getting hit in the throat. Oh i have a few of those stab wounds. Also with knife duels you have time to think about your death should you lose. If you are supposed to meet up that evening you have no idea how time flies. And you have to strap up and hope you dont catch a fatal blow. And you hope this guy isnt carrying a saber. Because you got to deal with whatever blade he brings. I used to love going up against guys with folding pocket knives. I carried a buck proline. About 12 inches. The guys couldnt get close enough to cut me. But that's the nature of knife duels. I survived nearly a dozen of them. Even now i am uncomfortable around anyone with a knife in their hand. Ptsd sets in. And every single day in violent inner cities nationwide people are engaging in gun duels. Just like the old west. And people are engaging in knife duels. So I appreciate your take on knives.

Thanks for sharing your real world experience, any day I'd rather walk away from a fight vs throwing down with a total stranger. If faced with it sure, but disengage and get away is a best the way to roll. Hell even lets consider if you "win", the guy better be dead or he'll sue the crap out of you or if he is dead, then who knows you probably will head to jail especially depending on the race of the people involved.

All good stuff but it relies on the person having the will to use the weapon. I trained our local barangay tanod (volunteer police) when I lived in the Philippines 2002-2005 and attended numerous knifing aftermaths. Most were on Sundays at the cockpit or pay night at the KTV bar. Most were one knife events, very rarely did both use a knife although quite a few were found to have knives on them, just never got a chance to deploy. None of those involved, to my recollection, had any formal martial arts training; most Filipinos barely recognise the names Arnis or Eskrima and nobody in the provinces had ever heard of Kali, at least back then. What I learned was that knife fights were usually stabbings, not slashings unless they used a bolo (machete). Most were multiple stab affairs; the 'sewing machine' analogy. Nearly all were spur of the moment bursts of violence with no thought of the consequences. Many a killer would later hand themselves in, crying at how the victim had ruined their life by making them stab him etc. I stopped teaching knife fighting in my Arnis training, except as part of the 'culture' of the art. I focused on knife defence training because anyone can kill with a blade or improvised knife, ice pick, screw driver, pen etc. I also included mindset and mentality training because it is one thing to train to use a knife and another thing entirely to use one; especially when you have seen the aftermath. As for carrying a knife for self defence; don't. It is pre-meditation for murder. I carry an Opinel N08 for cutting stuff, not for protection. As for stopping someone, most people stabbed or even cut say they either felt noting or it was like a punch and only later did they realise they had been stabbed. so unless you open their throat the odds are they will continue to attack you before they have any clue you tagged them. Use an impact weapon but ideally, avoid conflict through awareness. Rant over. Did like the video, good production values.

Just a friendly suggestion: Look more to the subclavian. * It only requires 1" of penetration, unconsciousness is almost instant and generally it results in the quickest death. *It is harder to slip out of measure than neck/ head targets. * It has an easily recognized, accurate guide (The collarbone). Stab on either end slash along inside of the bone.
@TheSurvivalOutpost
@TheSurvivalOutpost 3 года назад
Appreciate those tips, collarbone is a great reference point
@jamessethmoore
@jamessethmoore 2 года назад
Agreed. The carotid artery may seem like a good focal point; however, at 1.5 inches beneath the skins surface and surrounded by tough cartilage it makes for a difficult target. If you are stabbing with ice-pick grip it's far quicker to attack the eye socket. The intention isn't necessarily to kill your attacker, but to render him non-functional. Less of a mess when it comes to your impending criminal trial.

I have personally seen perhaps a dozen knife fights in Burma (Myanmar), why and where is a long story and not the point, what I saw was in almost all of the knife fights, big knives, both fighters died, one usually drops at the fight site and the other (winner?) Dies a few feet or yards away, many make it to a diffraction location, sit down to rest and bleed out shortly their after. It's a surprisingly quiet fight, quick, and no one really wins. Horrible

No fixed blade is legal in the UK, as is any lock knife and anything over a 3” blade length, without good reason for carrying (like camping, but definitely not in a urban setting). That leaves most effective blades illegal and only the killers, muggers and thugs have them and nowadays regularly use them on a frighteningly escalating scenario. You are not allowed to carry any self defence knives or any self defence tools of any kind! Yes, it’s just stupid crazy, because you can’t carry as a self defence knife or anything, so basically you can’t go out with something that you might intend to defend your life with. Only numpty idiots in the UK could think of such a stupid law and in so doing makes us easy pickings and targets to the scum that has flooded the UK recently who carry huge knives illegally and have no compunction about using them. When I lived in the US for 10 years I loved the simple saying, “ Outlaw guns and only the outlaws will have them”. Everyone should have the God given right to defend themselves and their loved ones and not be easy prey to scum. Some of your techniques need an ice pick grip, edge in to cut down and therefore, in. You show a couple where you pull the knife after stabbing but your edge is out. Think Libre.

UK mentioned! As such, here's some very much not legal advice from a random anime avatar guy on the interweb. And yeah, I'm commenting on a two year old video with stuff that should be common knowledge to anyone in the UK, but it might keep one guy looking out for his own safety out of trouble Fixed blades like the one shown in public are basically a no-go unless you have a specific use for them(e.g. it's a plumber's knife and you're on the way to a job), and folding blades have to be non-locking and less than three inches. So absolutely do carry one, but don't count on it helping you in a self defence situation, because either the other guy doesn't have a knife and you look like a murderer(which is always the problem with a successful knife defence), or he has a machete... best of luck to ya. Best option I've found is to develop a knee injury and a weight problem so you can carry a substantial cane, which you can use for "display" and blocking to show you went through steps of escalation to find the minimum necessary force. Though at home, feel free to engage the rapscallion with sword and buckler, because the home is special

If ice pick methodology meansbdragging the knife while pulling back and doing more damage (which isnt a unique concept), wouldnt it make more sense to use the ice pick method with just a regular back hand grip? It makes more sense to me that if the technique is to do more damage while dragging the knife through the wound, then wouldnt it be better to have the blade facing that direction preemptively? 🤔

good video. people in the comments section are absurd. all these people crying that these techniques will mean you "go to jail" probably all support carrying guns and hold a double standard against knives. just like with a gun, you should only take out a knife if you are in full fear of your life. just like with a gun, your objective is to do whatever you can to eliminate the threat to your life as quickly as possible. just like with a gun, you need to avoid messy situations in the first place (bar fights, road rage, etc.) so that if the time ever comes, there's no question you were under attack and not in an ego-battle. if you follow those rules and are not some criminal with a record yourself, you'll ultimately be fine. for an extra measure i highly recommend carrying pepper spray as that will help defend you literally (possibly avoiding a knife fight entirely) and legally. if they fight you while sprayed, then you are green to use the knife and they are now handicapped by the spray. unlike a gun, sometimes with a knife your only targets of opportunity are things like hands/arms, so you attack those, and sometimes that will be enough to convince them to run. there's plenty of videos about doing that though, and you have no responsibility to talk about every single type of tactic out there. other times, you will have a chance to strike something more lethal; if your knife is out for morally sane reasons, then that is what you should strike or you are just playing with your life.

Hey man, Awesome video. Super clear. Would love to be able to start some sort of basic civilian program for self-defense utilizing weapons of this kind (mainly knives). Something which would tie into basic MMA for a more complete system would be awesome. Love the explanation. Seems like there are all sorts of everyday objects one can use for self defense: screwdrivers, ice picks, small blades/knives. 1. Using a standard fighting stance. 2. Thinking of the targets with piercing capabilities - arteries, brain (through eyes), lungs (piercing straight through the back) The move at the end is interesting. Seems like a feint to cause a reflex (ie: something sharp headed towards eyes, put hands up to block). Thanks for the tips!

I would look at aikido vs kali vs street fighting .knife attacks you will never see coming straight on . Kali is very straight forward and specific blades . I chose smaller then bigger super low profile but stout not curved (people I have spoken with have shared that the most knife used in a knife attack is a kitchen steak knife and most knife attacks are in prison very unlikely to get attacked with a knife on the street ( but training right is always helpful.) Either way you will get cut . Never never never hesitate (violent reaction when in this situation or any life threatening) or wait for the attack . I can personal tell you that forward cross slashes are easily counter able so do not do them . So try not to get into crowds or close proximity with people . Keep eyes open check hands empty hands going home safe . Check more into knife wounds because the movies and certain martial arts are not correct with knife attacks and what the human body can handle .

The issue I have with the reverse grip is that it is mainly only useful for 2 things, rushing an opponent to clinch and sneaking up on an opponent, either option being something that is viable for military or criminals but which will land you directly in jail if used for "defense". You lose range, you lose mobility of the blade, you limit your options severely and are guaranteed to go to jail if using effective techniques. I never saw the value of teaching reverse grip to civilians.

Thats been my experience make what you will of it . try straight throwing and double up on your blades is the best advice I could add , sometimes you dont have the bigger knife too. alot of illegals carry machetes . i can hit just about anything at 20 ft and it wasnt hard to learn .hope it helps , just found your channel . i appreciate what your doing . thanks and take care

Actually a person doesn't instantly drop from a punctured lung, even a compressive pneumothorax doesn't kill you instantly. The carotid artery is not sa superficial as you'd think...but you made a good point in saying that a stab is better tham a slash. And third, the femoral is actually hard to get if you have a fairly small blade and the person is fighting back and has jeans or jacket. That's why, in my opiniom, knives are only a last resort self defence tool...they don't stop am agressor instantly and they carry legal implications. Whereas a taser or a pepper spray (or a gun if you're from the US) could work much better, with a knife as a last resort, because once you pull out a knife you turm it into a knofe fight.

If you tangle with and/or grapple with someone, even if you are delivering killing blows, it entails the risk of you being stabbed or hurt by the bad guy, and maybe held in place long enough for his allies to hurt you. I teach women to stab and move out of the way at the same time, trying to avoid being grabbed and trying to defang the snake by stabbing his hands quickly while using footwork to elude his grasp. The close up inside knifing techniques you are showing are good if you can't get away and need to be practiced for sure, but so do skills like countering and evading at the same time. Bruce Lee would use those angles to do his intercepting fists with little angular steps and small body turns, like a matador.
