Yup. Imagine we hadn’t noticed when the outdoor shower was leaking. Luckily we noticed ourselves first, but having a leak and not going could be real bad!
I've been waiting for this video! I have 2 suggestions.. Smoke Detectors! You could also get automatic water shut to that zwave... how cool would that be. If water is detected, the water would be automatically shut off. (if your on city water of course) You could also do light strips that connect to smart things... Sorry, Natalie. 😉 As always, Great video Laurence! 🙂
Both really good ideas 👍 we do want to expand it. Thanks for trying convince Natalie we need more sensors for the dogs safety. Definitely not to satisfy my ‘nerd needs’
We had Smartthings for quite a while now. Works great. I really like that you also get alerts if the hub is offline.. Adding a zwave smoke detector is a must have as well. Thanks for sharing!
Yup, that’s a great idea. We had plans for this and for a co2/natural gas sensor. Looks like Samsung have discontinued a lot of their ST things and outsourced it to somebody else. We still have plans to expand it, but I’d like to wait to see how Aeotec run things first
I love having smart gadgets in my house, I have a Google Home Hub, and Nest smoke detectors and a thermostat. Just need to get the power wired up for my doorbell :) Very cool that you're able to make the rig so "smart"!
Much appreciate this information to protect our dogs. The biggest problem for us is getting a consistent internet signal, we rely heavily on our ATT hotspot. So.. I wait with great anticipation for Starlink so that will never be a problem. But we are a ways from that happening in a mobile format. Thanks for the video!
Elon Musk confirmed Starlink use for RVs / mobile use by end of 2021. May take time to get more satellites in use before full coverage of the US. Also, there will be no limits of streaming internet. Of course, there will be bugs to be worked out but they appear to be getting that done quickly.
Since Aeotek have taken over the hardware, the prices have risen, but it still a pretty good system. Apparently some of the newer sensors don’t even need the hub, so we are interested to see how that works. Maybe we’ll do an update to this once we have had time to play with it a bit more
Those are some great devices. Anything that helps with piece of mind and protecting the pups is fantastic. I use a similar device that monitors the temps in my RV and has no monthly charge. Thanks for sharing! Steve
That is a very important aspect and actually, watching this back, I wish we had made that a bit clearer. Internet connectivity is an ABSOLUTE MUST for this solution.
Thanks Denny, it really does work well for dog safety and security. The internet solution is a really hard one. We’d also like to test it for a while if we are recommending it. We also worry that we’ve seen some youtubers recommend certain solutions and then that solution gets cut off or cancelled. We are working on it though 👍
@@BrazenBrits Elon Musk just announced that by the end of 2021 Starlink internet will be available for RVer's throughout the US. I'm pretty sure that if the price is right, the RV community is going to go nuts over it. I know that I will be lining up...if the price is right. Out here in the West there are many places without cell service, so this 👍
That's a great bit of kit, would mind one for our caravan as we go to a lot of CL sites where there's no one around. Just incase someone tries to tamper with things. Thanks for sharing
Great timing on this video because Michelle and I were just talking about getting some kind of monitoring for our rig. We are definitely going to steal this and install it also. BTW I didn’t think you would be the cheesy Floridian guy with the “Home is where you park it” t-shirt lmao 😂
That is a very cool system. My worry would be our sketchy at best internet/wifi while on the road. Awesome stuff. Thanks for sharing guys. #KarayokeBFF
Perfect. Got the part to power the router via 12v on the way so this is a perfect fit. Was wondering if there wouldn't be a way to create a rule to identify when your 110 goes offline - thinking about the sensor that you have wired for the lamp in your bay.
That’s a great idea. Yep, you should be able to setup a rule that when that sensor goes offline you get an alert. They may actually have another sensor to that. I’ll do some more digging on this!
Great video guys! I wish I saw this before I went with the Ring and Yolink but it's all really the same concepts! I think it's great to see a channel make a dedicated video on their smart solutions and set-up! I pieced mine together through other channels merely talking about their systems and then researching on my own but you guys make it really easy either to replicate what you have or use your idea as a primer for their own system! Brilliant! The one piece that I added to my architecture after seeing an idea from Changing Lanes was an APC battery back-up ( www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01FWAZEIU/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o09_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ) and plugged our mobile hotspot, router, Yolink hub, Alexa, and a few others into it to allow for their continued operations and surge protection in the event of a power outage. The last bit of kit I did was a Bluetti which I plugged the APC battery pack into it to further increase the power longevity. That maybe overkill, I could have bought a larger APC. I see the one downside to my system (due to the power back-ups) is not getting the alert that the power is out but only seeing the temp rise and getting the alerts that the temp is rising. The one unexpected aspect about the Bluetti/APC back-up is the hotpot/router continues to work when traveling and the routers continue to give us WIFI. With a hotspot that's not such a big deal but when we switch to a cellular router, that can be a benefit. I suppose if we used the MARcell temp monitoring system that uses its own cellular support (and monthly fees) it would give the power outage notification as well. But that goes into a much more expensive and redundant set-up which I think you were looking to avoid. I like the coded door lock idea as well, but never switched since I've seen people talk about it not fitting well as a retro-fit to the standard door lock. Any issues that you guys experienced with the installation? And I'm not affiliated with any of this stuff, just glad to share Tips, Techniques and best practices with you guys and the community! Thanks for putting this together! Cheers!
That's a great idea with the APC! This stuff is all the same. We have spoken to other channels about their setup. Jason (From Getaway Couple) gave me a demo of his smart RV which was really impressive. However, my challenge is making it work 100% of the time so i can get the 'Wife Approval' sign off. If it was just me, I'd have some crazy things going on around the rig, but Natalie would not approve 😂 The RV lock is fantastic! We bought the trailer used so it was already fitted. But I did fit the storage bay RV locks. It was very simple and we wouldn't do without them now. If we bought a new rig, they would be the first thing we fit for sure. Both because we don't ever have to dig around looking for keys and also so that the camphosts can get into the rig if we ever needed them to. Some great ideas in your comment here. Looks like you've put a great system together!
We just subscribed to your channel. I'm loving it! Re: The Smart RV: I bought an indoor camera and a doorbell camera for the RV but they use 2.4gHz - most RV parks offer 5G networks that don't work. Are your smart IoT gadgets using the 2.4 network? If so how do you do that? Our RV doesn't have a router. Do I need to buy a certain one for this? I will also look at the Samsung Smart Things as they're very re-assuring during day trips away from the rig. Thanks! Paula
Hi Paula, thanks so much for subscribing! We have only ever used campground Wifi once and honestly, I'm surprised that they use 5G as 2.4 is much better over longer distances. We have a Pepwave router with an AT&T sim. However, for weekend use, this is a bit overkill. However, we also have a small AT&T mifi device that works great for small trips. During Covid we actually cancelled our more expensive service with the Pepwave and solely used the 2.4 mifi device. Despite all the requests, we have been delaying making a video on our internet setup as I don't have strong enough confidence in any of the truly unlimited providers......certainly not enough to recommend them to our community. After filming this, we found out that Samsung have discontinued their hardware line, but they sold the Hardware rights to a company called Aeotec. We haven't personally tried this, but we have heard that it works identical to our setup, just different branding. I hope this helps. Let us know if you need any more information.
We have the Smartthings system in our Sticks and bricks and are planning on moving that to our rig. One question, with putting those contact sensors on the doors, do you have any issue with proper temp readings when the door itself gets hot? Also, we have recently earned that Smartth9ings is fully Alexa capable, so we use Alexa for smartthings, Ring door cam and our Wyze cameras; 3 very different systems/manufacturers, but Alexa brings them all together. :)
